Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

I don't really watch TV in hotels so don't use the remotes. How many of you posting on here wipe your laptops and phones regularly ;)

The weirdest behaviour I've seen recently is a couple who come and park along my road and get out and sunbathe on the grass verge. Topless.

There's a small park about 2 minutes away (just an area of greenery next to a car park, so not overrun with kids or dogs playing).

On the car park thing, a couple of times I've moved my car if someone parks next to me in a completely/largely empty car park. I've also moved seats on a train when someone came to sit next to me in a half empty carriage which was only going to get emptier. In the latter case I think the guy was making a point because I had my bag on the seat next to me, but there were loads of empty two-seaters, so I just moved to a different one.

@cunoyerjudowel

Attending diet clubs run by overweight people - to be weighed in public and advised by someone clearly not following the instructions.

Where are these clubs ?

I went to one briefly because so many people recommended it. I really really struggled to hear how “this works so well” from someone who was about 3 stone heavier than I was (and I was heavy) and had been “following the plan” for 15 years.

My mum switches the oven off at the wall - the big red switch that switches the electric supply to the oven.

In her defence, it relates to something from decades ago and she knows it’s superfluous, but she still does it.

We do that. It’s because our then toddler kept turning the rings on. I presume many people with arsehole cats need to do similar.

Hang on, why would they be watching porn on a hotel TV? Surely they wouldn't be able to get onto that sort of channel and would use their phones or a laptop?

Bless you for having such an innocent mind.

There’s porn channels on free view.

I’m Asian, so all of our remote controls are plastic wrapped, I put hotel/airbnb ones in an ikea bag. I used to clean hotel rooms, I always thoroughly wash the cups, glasses and spoons before we use them.

Asian as in Chinese rather than Indian? All the people I know from Hong Kong do that with the remotes! Why?

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/08/2024 20:11

ChessieFL · 18/08/2024 17:21

I wouldn’t say that behaviour makes no sense. It may not be something you would do (and it isn’t something I would do) but the reason they’re doing it does make sense. Hotel TV remotes carry lots of germs and they don’t want to get those germs on their own hands. Perfectly sensible, if a little obsessive.

But you can wash your hands though.

Pardon my ignorance but whats the Asian reference? I know Gypsies cover loads of things in plastic but hadnt hear of it elsewhere. Is it just for cleanliness?

Oh god, do they have no shame?

No. Shame is seen as very old fashioned these days.

The young girl next to me at Tesco last week was putting a Lovehoney Rabbit vibrator, lube, condoms and a 10 pack of Peroni through the self service checkout last week, needed an ID check, the male assistant who came over discreetly said, let me get you a bag for this, love and she said "oh no. I don't need a bag. I can carry it all!" and proceeded to balance the Rabbit, Lube and Durex on top of the Peroni and walked out in full view of everyone, not a care in the world.

Sex positivity. Maybe not a bad thing? I felt deeply ashamed in my 30s buying pregnancy tests for very much planned, wanted babies!

That makes sense, I guess. Looks ugly though. It is also the soaking dishes in the basin in soapy water and then barely rinsing them to put them on the drying rack with sudsy water still dripping down.

That may just be my MIL 😂

Totally agree. Putting an ugly plastic bowl in an otherwise pretty sink is akin to putting an off-cut of carpet on top of laid carpet to 'keep the carpet clean'.

Just take a bit of care! 😆

LegitimateAntelope · 18/08/2024 20:02

I just think out of sight, out of mind. As long as stuff looks clean, I don’t think about it.

SparrowFeet · 18/08/2024 20:02

@redalex261 what do you mean by scrambled egg mix? Are you putting the whisked eggs through a sieve? I can't even picture what you're trying to sieve out? Isn't it all runny anyway?

Simonjt · 18/08/2024 20:01

I pass scrambled egg mix through a sieve before cooking it so there’s no white flecky bits in the finished product. (bleurgh!) Been told by everyone this is very weird.

that's not weird, it's cheffy! The classic French way to make an omelette involves straining the eggs first for extra silky smooth texture.

ShuvieTupya · 18/08/2024 20:00

i dont think men wank on the remote, its more they have dirty hands post wank

HowardTJMoon · 18/08/2024 19:59

I must admit the main reason I use a washing up bowl in the sink is that was how I was raised. But it's useful when I'm cooking. I fill up the bowl with hot soapy water for washing up on the go then take it out of the sink so I can still drain pasta etc.

This is my ‘weird things people do’ too!

I know several people who on paper are probably millionaires or close to it and all they go on about is shopping at Aldi, and how the air fryer saves them electricity and how they make sandwiches on a day trip because they don’t want to pay to eat out…

Does my head in.

Maybe that's why they're almost millionaires, not wasting money! I'm on my own now, I probably have a very significant amount of money but I still use a cheap air fryer rather than putting the over or grill on, I buy some stuff from Aldi/Lidl and if I'm going out for the day I will sometimes take a sandwich I've made!

rayofsunshine86 · 18/08/2024 19:59

Teanbiscuits33 · 18/08/2024 17:21

Some people won’t use hotel kettles as apparently people piss in them or worse. Don’t know how true but it wouldn’t surprise me 😂

Gosh, that sort of behaviour really boils my piss!

Putting keypad tones on (or not switching them off) on your phone.
My aunt comes over and is on her phone 16 hours a day and it's bip bip bip bippity bipbip

I must admit that I used to do this too. I had a dog that would turn a bin over and go through the rubbish, but couldn't reach the bag I had suspended on a cupboard handle.

we do it too... a bin is just an middle man extra container that gets dirty that you then have to pull the bag out of anyway, plus I don't want to faff with a bin lid every time I want to throw something out.

Obviously people put a bag in the bin right? so the bin itself is completely unnecessary.

We also have no logical space for a bin.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/08/2024 19:57

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/08/2024 18:22

Three. I do it too. I turn the microwave and oven off at the wall so that there are no red lights winking away in the kitchen at night. It's not OCD, it's just habit.

Don’t you have to reset the clock on the oven and microwave every morning???

BashfulClam · 18/08/2024 19:54

Yep I take a bag for the remote as it’s usually really dirty and I don’t want to wash my hands every time I pick it up. I have eczema on my hand and washing constantly makes them sore. I got infected skin due to germs getting to the open sore parts of my hands. So I do take a few precautions.

@PuggyPuggyPuggy I'm not in the U.K. and here it would be bad manners to sit a mile away from the only other person and we don't think anyone we don't know is going to accost us in broad daylight Grin

But it really isn’t the done thing in the UK. There is absolutely no reason to park next to someone when there’s loads of free spaces or sit next to someone when there’s lots of free seats. It makes me uncomfortable - maybe because I’ve had so many experiences of being followed or accosted as have most women. There just is no need to do it!

My late MIL would turn off the gas and electricity if she was going shopping, she refused to have a fridge when she saw a programme about CFCs, think that's right. She also turned off all the sockets before going to bed, when we came downstairs on Christmas morning I thought the fridge light had gone but no, the whole thing was off at the wall, the girls had gooey chocolate ice cream with breakfast, we didn't keep much in the little freezer box as we lived abroad and were just over for Christmas.
