Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

I refrain from drinking if I think I may have to use one.

How long would you go without a drink?

I've heard it all now. You have a problem.

Incidentally I only know one person who has caught MRSA - my DF. Where did he catch it from you ask - a hospital.

Indeed I do. I'm immunocompromised. Hence my precautions.
Why you have a problem with that I do not understand. I never suggested everyone should do it. It's just what I do. The thread is about seemingly weird things people do, is it not?

Your personal experience is not the sum total of all experience on the planet. But yes, hospitals and care homes absolutely are the worst places for picking up MRSA, among other things. So I'm not surprised at all.

Tartantotty · 18/08/2024 22:58

I loathe public toilets, particularly in planes and trains. I refrain from drinking if I think I may have to use one.

😆😆

Oceangreyscale · 18/08/2024 22:57

My aunt covers her TV every night before she goes to bed with a large lace cloth.
Not even to hide the TV presumably as it's visible in the daytime. Just at night. Like it's a caged parrot or something.

You dirty blighter Primative. The remote control in hotels is well known to be filthy. Give it a wipe with an antibacterial wipe before you use it always. You being unconcerned about germs is a bit weird.

Nope... still don't care.

I always say please and thank you to Alexa!

When the robots rise, she'll remember I was always polite 😉

Not just me then!

No, that is disgusting. There was a TV programme a while back where they tested make-up brushes and toothbrushes in bathrooms. They all had poo particles in them because the flush projects the poo and urine up to six feet! Happy with poo in your toothbrush? Put the seat down!

The seat? Assuming you both mean the lid?

OMG!! I do the exact same thing for that exact reason lol 😂 and if my husband or dd gets a bit ratty with her I tell them they will be first when it comes to life!! I also apologise for their rudeness…. I’m hoping that it remembers and she takes it easy on me 😅 my husband is sleeping but I can’t wait to show him this lol

I don’t have Alexa, but do thank Siri.

Nanana1 · 18/08/2024 22:55

I think that these are the same people that find it necessary to put the hotel room's TV remote control in a bag or to disinfect it before using it, because they have no intention of washing their hands any time soon

Why would someone who doesn’t wash their hands after the toilet or before eating be bothered by remote control germs?

I wash my hands but I don’t bag up remotes.

redtrain123 · 18/08/2024 22:54

I used to be a mushroom peeler, and still do if a wash doesn’t get all the dirt off.

PrimitivePerson · 18/08/2024 17:27

Thing is, germs on your fingers generally don't do any harm at all unless you stick them in your mouth, or eat without washing your hands or something. If you observe normal hygiene precautions, what's the problem?

My DP turns the oven on to maximum because she thinks it heats up more quickly.

KittenQuibbles · 18/08/2024 19:49

Oh yes, I'm a mushroom peeler too! Gets rid of all the soiley bits without having to get them all soggy when cleaning in water. Far better!

Are we related? Me and my DM are the only mushroom peelers I have ever met!

I have to open and close door 7 times before I leave the house otherwise everyone I know will die

Is that OCD my sweet? My brother has similar repetitive traits x

XChrome · 18/08/2024 21:01

Sigh.
You get the germs on your hands. You then rub your eyes, nose or other mucus membranes, or you eat something, brush your teeth etcetera. That's how the bacteria get in.
One study I saw found that 60% or hotel rooms harbour dangerous bacteria, including the dreaded MRSA.

So no, it isn't weird. It's smart, though I would just wipe it down with an antibacterial instead. I always do that in hotels. I wipe the surfaces in the bathroom, the remote, the phone, the doorknobs and the light switches. Those are the high risk spots. I also ask for a freshly laundered blanket and underpad because, although the sheets are clean, the blankets and underpads have usually not been washed in a month or more.

I've heard it all now. You have a problem.

Incidentally I only know one person who has caught MRSA - my DF. Where did he catch it from you ask - a hospital.

mondaytosunday · 18/08/2024 22:47

Drinking squash at all - pre made or 'fresh' (what an oxymoron that is) is gross - vile stuff.

As a person who frequently washes their hands (truth to be told, probably too often) I am of the opinion that many people don't wash their hands often enough. It never ceases to disgust amaze me the number of people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet (even after a number 2) or who come in from a shopping trip/day out etc and start handling food before washing their hands. I think that these are the same people that find it necessary to put the hotel room's TV remote control in a bag or to disinfect it before using it, because they have no intention of washing their hands any time soon. They are probably the same people who lay on their bed with their shoes on.

Sorry, but you are wrong. I do wash my hands at appropriate times, but rarely after I have been outside and I wouldn't even think of putting a hotel remote control into a plastic bag (I've never heard of anyone doing that before reading it on MN today!) because I wouldn't even think about "catching" something off it, and I wouldn't wash my hands simply because I had touched it. I do lay on my bed sometimes with my shoes on - so what? I am rarely ill, and go to the doctor every 10 or so years. The obsession with germs on MN is ridiculous.

fliptopbin · 18/08/2024 22:42

My MOL pulls out the washing machine and dishwasher grom under the kitchen counter to unplug them each night, pushes them back, then does the same in reverse each morning.

Tinymrscollings · 18/08/2024 22:40

I am the proud owner of a DH who every single morning takes a clean cloth, folds it and places it underneath the spout of our espresso machine to catch any post-coffee making drips. I have explained repeatedly that he is preventing the drip tray from fulfilling its life’s purpose and irritating the fuck out of me, but to no avail.

I never quite understand the ‘not walking barefoot’ bit. So you’d walk in your socks? That are touching your shoes or going in your bag? Why are the soles of your feet so much more special/vulnerable?

It all touches each other, ultimately.

Like I said, I’ve been on a long journey with germ obsession, and unless it’s actual food safety or basic body hygiene, it’s all just a way of increasing anxiety. It makes zero difference if it’s your shoes or your bare feet on the hotel carpet - you’re probably not going to lick either.

I think some people that are germophobes want everyone else to be germophobes as well.

I wipe hotel remotes, switches and handles and don't walk barefoot on hotel carpets, just gross.

Washing raw chicken is quite dangerous from a food safety perspective.

I think having a car window sticker is weird, esp those ones of cartoon characters of your family. Why does anyone driving behind you give a toss, hate them

I always take anti-bac wipes with me whenever I go on a flight to clean the tray table, the remote, around the window etc. Someone - who was going to be sat beside me - asked to be moved when she saw me doing this. Win win!
