Finding weekends tough.

OP posts:

I'm not single but Mr Monkey works late most Saturdays as his job is in retail and when he is marathon training Sunday is long run day.

This Saturday I cleaned the flat, went to an exhibition with friends and then drinks afterwhere we were joined by more friends.

Today I have done some Duolingo, gardened my balcony salad garden (cucumber, tomato and cucamelon plants) for a bit, washed some clothes, done some food shopping and went for a long walk in the local woods. I'll spend the early evening finishing a library book and having a leisurly bath.

I'm not single, but for me it's the freedom to be spontaneous. I might get up early and do something, or I might stay in bed until 11. I've intentionally reduced my social commitments so that I can revel in the freedom of choice. This weekend has been pretty much spent in bed, on the sofa ir on the patio as I'm tired after a busy two weeks, after a lazy morning I took along bath, dressed in something both cute and comfortable, and I've eaten nice things and had pots of tea between snoozes I'm grateful I can indulge the need to rest.

CobaltQueen · 18/08/2024 16:37

I go shopping
Long walks
Read a lot
Watch good TV with snacks

I do sometimes wish I had someone to go out for meals with though or mini breaks. Yes you can do that alone but if you aren't a confident person then it's easier said than done.

Hennypen321 · 18/08/2024 16:37

I walk miles and miles, mountains when I can be arsed, or just nice long hikes with snacks, clear head space, appreciating the time out. Deep breaths. I love that time!

I also - paint my nails, clean my kitchen and pretend it's always like that, make some lush food, listen to music.

HamSad · 18/08/2024 16:36

Whatever I want. It's joyous. No compromises, no soft play, no supervising homework.

Happyher · 18/08/2024 16:35

What ever I like and feel like doing. I love the freedom

TooMuchRedMaybe · 18/08/2024 16:34

Single with grown up kids and a dog here. I spend a lot of my weekends with friends. We go out, watch movies, go for walks, exercise or just meet up for a glass of wine. I usually try and make sure I have Sunday evenings on my own at home and I tend to just watch TV with my dog and cook something that will last me 2-3 days.

Coastalcreeksider · 18/08/2024 16:33

Lots of gardening, weather permitting, meeting friend in town where she lives, cooking or baking, another friend coming round for couple of hours for tea and cake. Sometimes we walk into town where I live.

Some weekends very quiet and don't see anyone, others see family and friends each day.

jay55 · 18/08/2024 16:33

This weekend I'm visiting family, been out for some coastal walks.
Usually I take myself for a coffee and pastry Saturday morning then go to the cinema.
And Sundays are housework and watching too many streaming gb shows.

Ti7ch · 18/08/2024 16:33

Usually parkrun with friends / visiting friends

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/08/2024 16:33

Single with adult children. I often end up working one day over a weekend, but if I don't then I like to get up late, read in bed, noodle about on the internet, do some writing, run, take the dog somewhere nice and scenic, do some gardening, try to catch up with the housework that's been neglected during the week, bake, watch stuff on YouTube, make flat pack furniture, paint walls, go into town and browse and have a coffee... sometimes I just stay in bed until the dog asks to go out (and that can be mid afternoon if the weather is dreadful).

When I was single and childless I just got drunk Fridays and Saturdays then spent Sundays with my best friends nursing our hangovers and go out for food ready for the working week

We would also do this one weekends at different locations, nightclubs, beach, camping, rent cottages in random places, go to different parts of the uk to do the above

I assume you were quite young? I am in my forties and that would not suit my lifestyle - or many people I know who have moved to an adult stage in life.

you have described most people’s weekends when they were at uni.

probably not a particularly helpful post to someone who is struggling with weekends as (I assume) a proper grown up.

I have a mad job so I make sure I take some time to rest.

I spend time with family, meet friends for walks, lunch or drinks. Garden (actually must go and cut the grass!), clean the house, sort clothes for the week ahead, read, borrow my neighbours dog and go for big walks.

TroysMammy · 18/08/2024 16:27

I'm not single but my partner is out and about so we rarely do things together on the weekend. I may as well be single.

waltzingparrot · 18/08/2024 16:27

Park Run/Walk - stay for social drinks afterwards.

WomanOfSteel · 18/08/2024 16:25

Not single or childless but I’m looking forward to just being spontaneous. I’d love to just bugger off with a tent for the weekend and have an explore in random places. Or book a cheapo hotel. There are so many walks I’d love to do, even if I had to do them in bits. Stay in bed reading a book. Gym. Get the bus/train to a different area/seaside. I suppose it depends whereabouts you live but I spend a lot of time looking places up. I love old buildings, history and going to gigs, so I try and combine them.

TroysMammy · 18/08/2024 16:25

Sit in bed reading news on kindle. Get up shower and wash hair if going somewhere. Leisurely shopping for food and/or other things, sewing things to sell, minimum housework, card making, prep dinner from scratch, depends on time of year gardening, wandering around the garden eating tomatoes straight off the plant, new hobby penpalling so writing. Visit parents, drink tea, chat to neighbours, talk to cat, have a notion of tidying/rearranging stuff then get in a mess, tidying it up can take days as I get distracted and it gets to be a massive task. The world is your oyster.

wingslikeeagles · 18/08/2024 16:11

@Getitwright you've either misread the title or been really tone deaf.

@OP - I'm single with adult children. Weekends can be tough. I echo a PP, join a Meetup group, look for things going on at weekends like Parkrun etc.

DaisyChain505 · 18/08/2024 16:04

Getting out in nature is my favourite. I’m lucky I live near a lot of woods, parks, pretty places to walk.

Go to the supermarket and treat yourself to your favourite nibbles, pack up a picnic and take a book and a blanket to a nice outdoor spot and relax.

Go to a cosy cafe and order a coffee and cake and take a book.

Arrange meet ups with friends. (If they have children I specifically mention it would be great to have an adult catch up and a cocktail so they get the hint not to make it child based)

See what’s on at the cinema, local theatre etc.

Do life admin. Sort the house, do the food shop, pre prep and cook meals for the week ahead to make life easier.

Do things for you that make you feel good. Get your nails done, stay home and do a hair and face mask.

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/08/2024 16:01

I’m neither single nor childless but often wish I was. If I was I would;

  • run more
  • go to more galleries and exhibitions
  • go on mini breaks to Europe
  • do more gardening
  • learn to play an instrument
  • go surfing
  • do more writing (for me, not my job

Bloody wish I was now!

Day99 · 18/08/2024 15:59

Exercise, meet friends, go out, brunches, read, cook nice food, long walks, watch netflix, go to a spa, travel, do hobbies.... do whatever I want to. Sometimes do things solo, sometimes with friends.

BettyBardMacDonald · 18/08/2024 15:59

Mostly work on never-ending garden and DIY projects.

Socialize, sleep, watch films, do creative projects, yoga, exercise, walk, mani-pedi (do my own), plan holidays, take classes, visit museums. Organize.

If you're bored have you considered volunteering or starting something like a dog-walking business?

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 18/08/2024 15:59

My weeks are usually pretty packed so weekends are a chance to sleep in, have a long session at the gym followed by coffee & cake, catch up on housework & either see family & friends or go for a walk somewhere.

Also, if I’ve got time, batch cooking for the next few days - I bought a cookbook & I’m trying out all the recipes. And the luxury of just lying on my sofa with a book & the cats.

The big caveat here is that I love being single without kids. If you don’t, I can see it would be very different.
