I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

Agree. Summer is dying and we have a long a long slog ahead until spring. Depressing

I've found my people! I thought I was the only one. As soon as it's mid August I feel sad as know summer has ended and winter will soon be with us I love May/June as it's the promise of light evenings and warmer weather.

I'm sad that I didn't get one decent day on the beach this year. Every hot day was either on a weekday or a day when we had so much on and couldn't make it. I lugged a huge rucksack and cooler down to the beach today (Cornish beach so a fucker of a way) and we had to leave after 2 hours as we were all frozen and it started raining.

I need one whole day in blazing sunshine. Minimum 28 degrees to lie on the beach, swim in the sea, cook sausages on a barbecue, and play with the dc. If I get that then I can make it through the winter.

This summer is our first in our new house with a big garden on the edge of the countryside and I have been discovering joy after joy this month. The earlier dusk means we are seeing the bats! Our house martins have fledged their last clutch and are exercising their babies ready for their big journey south! The overgrown bottom end of the garden is heavy with blackberries! The bees and butterflies are still about, the cats keep finding sunny patches to snooze in, and the chickens are as lively as ever. I have deeply enjoyed this summer. To me, August is like the swimmer on the edge of the pool waiting for the start of the race, as so much food becomes ripe in gardens and wilderness for foraging. It's exciting to be waiting for the harvest.

The turns of the seasons are all exciting in their own ways.

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 17/08/2024 20:58

Yes I've noticed there's less wasps.

Every month is expectation versus reality. I think this August is just warming up literally and figuratively but in 2 weeks its September and bang..this years summer is over. And I love cheap, easy breezy summer.

Pookerrod · 17/08/2024 20:58

We always have our 2 week summer break the last 2 weeks of august, it’s perfect. If we’re lucky and feeling flush we’ll have a week somewhere at the start of the summer holidays too. But I would never give up my holiday at the end of august. It’s like a final hurrah to summer.

Best month is May, with the summer stretching out in front of you…. apart from this year that is where the only thing in front of us was more and more bloody rain!

MumblesParty · 17/08/2024 20:58

I don’t mind the start of august, but as it progresses I start to feel sad about summer ending. When the combine harvesters start driving past my house I know it’s as good as over.

SunsetandCupcakes · 17/08/2024 20:57

@YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer sending you love, I understand, sadly.

Op I feel the same. The closing nights seem to close around my soul.
The lack of summer has intensified it this year.

Hahaha... in an attic flat between the tannery and sweet factory... not so much...

Sounds a bit West Side Story and that was one hot town!

Bunnycat101 · 17/08/2024 20:57

It doesn’t really make any sense though as there are lots of AI places they could have done with amazing kids clubs and/or a nannying service. It would have cost them a lot more to pay for accommodation for you all than just do a resort that provides childcare.

FuckThePoPo · 17/08/2024 20:56

That's why we always go abroad the last two weeks of August

August is actually quite a wet month in the UK. May and June are the driest months.

It never used to be growing up! The end of August is my birthday and it was always sunny and particularly when I was small, was always hot too. Every year for 7 years straight, we had a BBQ on the day of my birthday. And it's the last few days of August.

Allotmenthelp · 17/08/2024 20:55

August is my favourite month. Kids are off school and I’m lucky I have it off too, so lots of lovely days out. It’s still lovely and warm so I’m not having to contend with mud and spending money every time we go out.

I absolutely hate September though, going back to school and the nights dramatically drawing it. Not to mention that spider season starts! If I was rich I’d have a holiday home somewhere and come back in April.

Nope. August is birthday month in our house. 4 birthdays to celebrate, always lots of family things going on, parties, happy times. Today we've had a wonderful family BBQ with a trip up the canal on BIL boat and fishing.

Life is what you make of it, if you let yourself wallow then more fool you!

Trust me - I’d love to not wallow but the thought of schools being back in 2 weeks plus the impending doom of another long winter is a bit much to handle!

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 17/08/2024 20:54

On a personal level the first half of August is rough for me. My daughter died Aug 15, 1990 and my father died Aug 11, 2011. Once I'm past those dates though I start to feel rejuvenated. I live in the US. The nights are getting cooler which I love (I hate the heat of summer) and usually the days are cooler and less humid then they were in July. I work in a school and we have one more week and we are back. I love my job, so I'm happy to be going back. All my kids are grown now, but when they were school age I also loved the routine of "school time". Fall is my favorite season and I know it will be here soon

HauntedbyMagpies · 17/08/2024 20:53

Well I wasn't feeling low before I opened this thread but I bloody well am now

There are no wasps, hadn't you noticed? This is not good

They are all at Gullivers Valley in Rotherham - the place is swarming with them. Lots of kids crying because they'd been stung.

Like others , I get a strange , sad feeling at this time of year , I think it’s the “ back to school “ feeling , even though I’m 51 .

Ha it could be that! I'm 50s too so a looong time left!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 17/08/2024 20:48

Agree it's a melancholy month, spare a thought for those of us with birthdays near the end of August always faced with excitement and anxiety as school starts and end of holidays gets closer

familyissues12345 · 17/08/2024 20:48

I've always felt like this mid august, tried for the last few years to have our holiday late august to have something to look forward to, but it makes bugger difference!

BurntBroccoli · 17/08/2024 20:47

Yes I always find it sad too. The nights are already drawing in and the fresh greens in the countryside are changing to brown.
I do love Autumn though, it's just this blippy bit in mid to late August.

renthead · 17/08/2024 20:46

I don't feel like this but I can see why others do. I think August is like Sunday- some people get the "Sunday scaries" and it's the same feeling. My DH especially feels it in mid-August because he's a teacher.

Missingpate · 17/08/2024 19:32

Oh wow, there really aren’t! 😮

I think that’s because they’re all in our garden, trying to dive bomb us through the window.

Why are there no wasps? I'm quite worried about that.

sweetpeaorchestra · 17/08/2024 20:44

I think it’s August in the UK that has that particular melancholy, certainly not in southern Europe.
I love the September back to school feeling, and really love high summer and long nights, but August here is neither crisp autumn nor really summer either. Sort of more a sad elegy for summer?
Though trying to love it for that and because it’s not grim, horrid Feb or March
