To think that a holiday home is not a 'home'?

Colleague of mine constantly mentions her partner's 'home' in Spain. I thought the partner might be Spanish or grew up there, but turns out it's just a holiday villa. They've had it since around the financial crisis.

It's always "Freddie's family home in Spain"... or "At Freddie's Spanish home"... but it's not a 'home' it's a house. They've got no connection to the place other than going out there to sit in the sun and drink. They spend a couple of weeks a year there.

I think you’re getting caught up in semantics… honestly, life’s too
short, don’t sweat the small stuff!

Hey Karen, want some lemon with your bitter?

The Karen rubbish helps no one.

I'm not bitter, I just find it irksome.

We have a house in Antigua - we call it our 'house in the caribbean' or 'holiday home' but never would call it our 'home'. We have no connection to Antigua other than thinking it's a nice place to holiday. I think locals would be offended if we claimed it as our home.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

We own a second home in Spain. We spend up to five or six months of the year there. It is literally our second home. We don't holiday there, we live there for a lot of the time. We're not just holidaying there like you and your (Mr?) judgy pants. They have loads of land and had shedload of lovely resorts to sell off cheaply after the crash of 2008. We are harming no one and paying handsomely into the local economy, including lots of local tradesmen.

You are being ridiculous.

🙈😂

Gonners · 17/08/2024 21:17

Brilliant stuff here. So did you sell the place in Spain and buy a new one in Antigua, OP, or did you hire a barge and get it moved?

If you’ve got a place in Antigua, I am a Dutchman.

😂

"They've had it since around the financial crisis."

Oh boy, OP, you're really going to hate me as well.

"Colleague of mine constantly mentions her partner's 'home' in Spain."

Although, to be fair, we never mention it to people unless we're thinking of inviting them.

Very much like your colleague, we have a 'home' in Spain. It's actually in Mallorca; up in the high part near Soller (there was even snow there one winter).

We bought it 15 years ago when the DC were young teenagers/tweens and it's been a great holiday home. We've used it at Christmas, Easter and over the summer.

Over the years we've got to know other people who live there. Some, like us, have holiday homes (although they mostly seem to be German - I've tried to learn some German but all the Germans just say to me "Why bother learning German, everybody speaks English").

Others we've met live there permanently, a mix of Mallorcans and foreign nationals who have settled there.

We have a great place that we can just fly off to whenever we want (we've never done AirBnB etc, it's just for us). The DC have made friends there from different countries and have got involved with sailing and other water sports.

Overall, it's been great and very definitely not what the OP describes as "going out there to sit in the sun and drink"

Although I am sure that certainly does happen, but please, don't tar everyone who owns a house in Spain with the same brush.

outdamnedspots · 17/08/2024 21:04

Miaow!! That's a pretty judgemental comment. What difference does it make to you where they go or what they do? You sound jealous...

TulipCat · 17/08/2024 21:03

Maybe they have a better connection with their second home than you do with yours, hence the different terminology.

MathsandStats · 17/08/2024 21:02

Nourishinghandcream · 17/08/2024 19:46

So what should we call our motorhome from now on, motorplacewetravelinandlayourheadsfromtimetotime?
Don't think moho works with that.☹️

Haha I think I'm going to do the opposite and call our caravan our "carahome" just to annoy the OP 😁

The one thing we love about it is it feels like home. So I reckon we are justified.

Butchyrestingface · 17/08/2024 20:57

To be completely fair to @eetic , it might not be pure jealousy driving her so much as:

Grin
To think that a holiday home is not a 'home'?
Butchyrestingface · 17/08/2024 20:53

Jealously is such an UGLY emotion.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 17/08/2024 20:50

All I know is she's certainly in the doghouse, not the doghome, with you.

AGoingConcern · 17/08/2024 20:47

I think jealousy is causing you to reach for something to criticize.

It’s a second home. Sort out your own feelings and stop trying to make this couple seem like the unreasonable ones.

Maism · 17/08/2024 20:46

DH's family are not French but have a place in Provence - it's been in the family for the best part of 50 years. We definitely feel like it's home when we're there - it's a really special place and we have a firm emotional attachment to it.

coolkatt · 17/08/2024 20:46

Jealousy is a bad thing.

HarperSabrina · 17/08/2024 20:37

What are you on?
It’s a home in another country.. why on earth do you care so much?! Really weird!!

Scorchio84 · 17/08/2024 20:35

My sons nana & grandad have a place in Spain, think they must have it about 20 odd years & it's most definitely their home & they certainly spend mre than 2 weeks of the year (though mostly Grandad does as he's retired) They even had a fence put around the pool when my son came along, her sister & husband bought a place just around the corner & that too is very much their home too

I can actually admit that I am very jealous though unlike you @eetic & would very much love this option in years to come

Overheater · 17/08/2024 20:35

My parents have owned a holiday home for 10 years in a town we’ve holidayed in every year since I was a baby (30+ years). I 100% consider it be a second home as I have such a strong emotional tie to it. My whole family does. When we walk through that door, we feel at home.

HollyKnight · 17/08/2024 20:32

Holiday home.

mumedu · 17/08/2024 20:28

You sound envious.

blueshoes · 17/08/2024 20:23

Is this a wind up? Who can be arsed to split hairs between a home in Spain and a 'house in Antigua' 😂

Itislate · 17/08/2024 20:23

Who cares?
