To wonder how so many people are comfortable breaking the speed limit?

Is it just me? I’m pretty vigilant about sticking to the speed limit but more and more I’ve noticed recently that I’ll be doing 70 or just below on a dual carriageway or the motorway and someone will go flying past. God forbid I be driving at the limit on the outside lane, even if I’m going faster than everyone in the middle lane it’s only a matter of time before some knob is either flashing their headlights at me or driving up my arse (or both) while I wait for a big enough gap to move across so they can shoot off before doing the same to the next car in front.

It tends to be most often 4x4 drivers or Mercedes/BMW/Jaguar etc types. Maybe they just don’t think they should have to see the back of a 16 year old Fiesta!

I feel like this thread is in some strange parallel universe.

Just because cars may have improved, does not mean the human controlling it has aswell. In fact, due to cars being better, humans are worse, not paying attention and expecting the car to rectify their mistakes.

notprincehamlet · 16/08/2024 23:16

It’s ridiculous the speed limits on our motorways majority of people drive faster it’s about time they were updated to reflect how car safety has improved
Car safety might have improved but they're still driven by absolute dicks.

Because it is often not actually that dangerous breaking the limit.

What is most dangerous is driving too close to a car in front, driving inappropriately for the conditions and weaving in and out of lanes.

Modern cars have huge amounts of safety features including much better crumple zones, air bags, ABS brakes that stop them in really short distances, traction control and a whole load of other stuff.

The speed limits were set in the 1960s when a lot of people didn't even wear seatbelts.

So based on your final sentence do you fancy your chances if you crashed driving at 50/60/70 without wearing a seatbelt?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/08/2024 23:06

how long do you have to be in the overtaking lane for someone to be flashing you

Not long at all if you're unlucky enough to get a speeding bully come up behind you when you're overtaking legally. It's not a new phenomenon.

notprincehamlet · 16/08/2024 23:05

Because when a person gets behind the wheel of a couple of tonnes of metal, their brains fall out their ass?

HRTQueen · 16/08/2024 23:00

Yea they do

how long do you have to be in the overtaking lane for someone to be flashing you

i have often seen people stay in that lane at 70 it’s not so you can stick to 70

ErrolTheDragon · 16/08/2024 22:57

The most annoying drivers those that stick to 70 in the over taking lane so they can police it

If anyone did that it'd be pretty stupid ... does anyone really 'police' speed by disobeying motorway rules themselves? (I assume you mean lane hogging but in 3 rather than 2, not just 'overtaking but less quickly than I think they should')

The ones I find worse than that are when there's a lot of cars in lane 2 overtaking a lot of slower vehicles in lane 2 (eg trucks on an uphill that's got no crawler lane). They're all going at least 70 but then someone comes up faster, tailgates and flashes till the car in front squeezes back into 2, then he repeats up the line. Ugh. Dangerous bullying behaviour that probably shaves two fifths of bugger all off his journey time.

Very worst is that sort of tailgating in 50mph zones, especially when done by a truck though. Seriously scary if there's no gap to move into.

MorrisZapp · 16/08/2024 22:49

Average speed cameras are the way forward on notorious stretches. The drive from Dundee to Aberdeen is positively pleasant now everyone obeys the limit. Some dual carriageways don't have proper slip roads and that one requires passing across to the other side which is nothing short of terrifying. Perhaps it's been improved since our last run up, I hope so. Suicide overtaking on the A9 too, adds so much stress and easily solved with the ASCs

InkyPinkyPonky24 · 16/08/2024 22:45

@CantHoldMeDown Where did I say that we should get rid of car engines? I'm saying that speed limits are there for a reason, preferably to keep people safer and minimise the risk to others.

Wordsmithery · 16/08/2024 22:27

You're completely right OP, in theory at least. The reality, sadly, is that if you're overtaking more than one car you'll be in the overtaking lane for a bit and you'll likely get flashed or tailgated by some idiot going faster than they should, who thinks nobody should hold them up.

It's arrogant beyond belief to think that you're such a special driver that the rules of road don't apply to you.

It doesn't matter whether the speed limits are right. They are they law and if they are broken you are breaking the law.

Whether someone will face prosecution is a secondary issue.. Certainly if there was a crash,n beetle below the threshold for prosecution isn't going to be a defence to dangerous driving.

If someone disagrees with the law, then they are at liberty to write to their MP, set up a campaign, try to get it declared in parliament.

Completely agree. I'm astounded by the arrogance of some who think that there is zero risk if going over the speed limit...completely forgetting that we are all human and make mistakes no matter how much training we may have had on the road. Why risk it? Could these people live with themselves if they hit someone on the hard shoulder that they didn't see because they were travelling far too fast?

parkrun500club · 16/08/2024 21:34

Mischance · 16/08/2024 14:07

70 mph is NOT slow - it is the speed limit and no-one should be exceeding it in any lane. Never - not under any circumstances.

Do people causally break the law in any other sphere of life? - in the main no. A law is a law - you cannot pick and choose which you will abide by.

I bet the people who think it's fine to drive at 90 are the ones on the other thread who think it's outrageous to take a pastry from the hotel breakfast bar to eat later.

Now which one might kill or maim someone?

Rosesanddaffs · 16/08/2024 21:33

@AngeloMysterioso Too many, my brother was killed because some idiot was driving way over the speed limit and on his phone

parkrun500club · 16/08/2024 21:27

Chester23 · 16/08/2024 19:16

If they pull you over for your speed they aren't going to be asking your opinion. The poster I replied to didn't specify a speed just that they think the speed limit is a guideline.

I drive 80 on a motorway, I am aware i will likely get away with this. I had driven 75 past a police car and been pulled over. I am aware that the majority of police won't pull you over for being slightly over

The police might not pull you over but the cameras may well get you if they are switched on.

parkrun500club · 16/08/2024 21:25

Cosyblankets · 16/08/2024 17:33

There's no way anyone is flashing you if you move straight back after overtaking

Do you really think that?

There are loads of entitled drivers who think you shouldn't be in the outside lane if you are going less fast than they want to. They don't care that you are overtaking something, it's beep beep beep and flash flash flash. Not all drivers, thankfully a very small minority but enough to make an impression.

labamba007 · 16/08/2024 21:23

@DreamW3aver yes I drive on the motorway regularly. My answer was based on the OP explaining she does 70mph in the 'fast lane'. If that's what they are doing pulling into the middle lane as quickly as possible is what she needs to do.

You can disagree with drivers that go 70+ on a motorway in the fast lane, however not much is changing that and it's incredibly dangerous to keep them going at a slower pace getting very frustrated. Move over and let them pass otherwise there will be an accident.

And saying it's just impossible to get into the middle lane is bollocks.

Babyboomtastic · 16/08/2024 20:16

Oblomov24 · 16/08/2024 11:05

I don't think 70mph speed limit is suitable for some motorways anymore. Cars have changed and are more efficient, better braking systems and capabilities. Despite the speed test accident/crash data, I'd rather be allowed to drive at say 80mph.

And yet they are driven by Mk 1 humans who havent changed. Drive at 80 then you want 90 and all the time that stopping distance is getting greater even in perfect conditions

DreamW3aver · 16/08/2024 19:46

labamba007 · 16/08/2024 11:07

You should not be in the outside lane for more than a few seconds.

Do you do much motorway driving? Thats just so unrealistic most of the time I can only think you don't

I presume they race on a racetrack and not on the public road. My disgust remains intact.
