Aibu to suggest alcohol is out of fashion in middle class circles?

Just an observation, out for dinner with friends last Saturday night. We got taxis in, we always had a booze fest but now my friends have either cut out alcohol completely or stuck to one glass of wine or gin & tonic! Is alcohol going out of fashion in over 40, middle class circles or is it just my friends?

Not true. Shame to throw an unsubstantiated label 'snobbishness' into an interesting and helpful thread.

Difference in how people drink, how often they drink, where and quantities. And yes, absolute snobbery.

As I got older I found I got tipsy quicker and it took me longer to recover, then I started getting really awful heartburn so I gave up alcohol about 3 years ago. I love the taste so still drink zero alcohol beer and cider when I'm out, just tap water at home.

Nadeed · 19/08/2024 14:54

I never did get hangovers, because I did not binge drink when I was younger ow now. I still drink like I did when I was younger.

Goodtogossip · 19/08/2024 14:01

It's not going out of fashion, it's usually by the time you hit 40 the hang overs are a killer & because you've matured you think of the hang over before having too much to drink. That's my take on it anyway. & the fact that a night out costs an absolute fortune now many can't afford to drink as much as they used to in their younger days due to the cost & having more outgoings in your 40s than you did in your younger days when you had more disposable income.

Agree@bitteroulbag exactly what I thought reading @Maddy70 's rude response to your good suggestion

How is it rude to suggest i keep my opinions to myself and don't lecture my friends? Surely every single person knows the routes of cocaine.

EatTheGnome · 17/08/2024 17:16

Maybe a side effect of covid pandemic for some people. People got used to sober meet ups and are s happy to meet for a healthy walk instead of a drink.

Due to kids, we thend to see friends in someones home so less babysitting to arrange. I have noticed that when we meet friends, everyone offers alcohol but most turn it down for soft drinks. Anyone drinking limits themselves to a few glasses max.

So they know all about production and education of cocaine and the horrific havoc it wreaks and they make the “educated” choice to still indulge? Nice friends you have…

Snobbishness in abundance. Most people over 40 cut down alcohol input. It's called growing up.

Wish I'd experienced this trend! I grew out of getting drunk once I became a parent.

Am now early 50s and my DH, his family, most of our shared friends are heavy drinkers. It's so boring.

Please tell me where I can find all these moderate drinkers so I can befriend them!

I'm so sick of being the odd one out socially.

Ryeman · 17/08/2024 12:14

I’ve not noticed this. I think my peers still drink as much as ever although I’ve cut right down and find that ‘can’t wait to crack open the wine’ attitude a bit distasteful these days. I think younger people do drink a lot less though (I’m mid 40s).

This thread is inspiring me to cut down. I'd usually have a bottle of wine per week sometimes two.. I'm thinking maybe only Christmas or a nice glass of red on a winters night or nursing just the one g&t on a night out.. If I save the tenner or twenty quid spent weekly I'll have a nice amount saved for Christmas

I don’t go out drinking anymore, haven’t since my early 40s, we have a cupboard full of booze but touch the stuff & put that down to the menopause.. can’t seem to tolerate it anymore. . most of my friends still seem to enjoy a bottle of wine most nights, all now hitting the 60 Mark!

Don’t touch it I mean 🤣

Auburngal · 17/08/2024 08:36

I drink alcohol with a meal and have a drink after work.

My GP said to me that I need to cut back on the alcohol- probably drink on average 20-22 units a week. I said I work at a supermarket. She understood 🤣

WendyWagon · 17/08/2024 08:17

@Marine30
I lost my brother aged 54 last year.
He died whilst going through dialysis. His alcohol dependancy up to a year before he died ment he wasn't going to get better.
If you want to help him AA works best on men I think.
Buy the book Sober Dave, Alan Carr too. DM me if you want further help.

JMSA · 17/08/2024 06:22

I attended a Child Protection course a couple of years ago. We were told that middle class drinking was massively on the increase, and to expect more children with foetal alcohol syndrome in our schools.

Nanof8 · 17/08/2024 06:19

I tend to prefer to drink nonalcoholic versions now. I enjoy the taste of a cold beer in the summer but I buy a decent non or low alcohol version.

Mummadeze · 17/08/2024 05:53

I gave up because I didn’t ever drink at home so covid brought the opportunity for me to see how well I felt without it. I don’t enjoy going out now with friends in the evenings as much but I have found other ways to be happy.

AlleycatMarie · 16/08/2024 22:26

I definitely can’t drink nearly as much as I used to now I’m in my 40s, but definitely still enjoy a few!

boredybored · 16/08/2024 22:00

Yes and I think in years to come no one will drink . I see it as poison now and very damaging to your overall health and your brain.. I know a few people like me too .

I stopped around 40 because it stopped agreeing with me .

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 16/08/2024 21:37

I don’t drink as much but that is because I have a two year old! I know friends who will have babysitters and go all out coming home in the early hours (no judgement, just facts) but I can’t do it. I feel so so awful physically and emotionally for about two days - it simply is not worth it. Having to be in mummy mode at half 6 and playing, painting etc with a v active toddler doesn’t work on a sore head.
