To think being short is mostly rubbish!

For context…. I’m 4ft 11. And it’s rubbish! Here is why -

  • Food! I can only eat about 1500-1700 a day. I exercise a lot, I try to be healthy but a couple of biscuits and boom, I’m a fatty!
  • Food no.2..eating out.. If I have a main meal then a pudding it can be more than my daily allowance.
  • Gaining weight! One tiny bit of weight and I’m a fatty. And it’s far easier to gain then loose!
  • Alcohol - I just can’t handle it. I’m a ‘cheap date’ but who wants to be drunk on one glass of wine!!
  • Cloths - they just don’t fit! At 14 I got a sewing machine so I could take up all my jeans but often it’s not just the length. The curves and shape just doesn’t fit!
  • Cloths no.2 - short person, little feet! I used to be a size 3, now most size 3 are too big! And 2.5 are less common.
  • Respect.Im an adult, a full on grown up but I constantly feel younger than I am because often feel like people treat me that way. I’m sure there is a statistic about career success and hight/earnings (tall people do better)
  • Running! A 5k for me is a LOT longer than a 5k for someone with longer legs!!
  • Supermarkets - why put things so high up!!
  • People thinking I’m ‘cute’ if I was me, but taller, I wouldn’t be cute.
  • concerts - I can’t see. Any group of people and I’m stuck looking at people’s backs.
  • nose in armpits on busy public transport.

Im sure there are more!!

I also suspect being taller than average is equally rubbish - public transport seats, cloths not long enough etc (but could eat soooo much food!!)

Oh yes to the kitchen counters being the wrong height! We DIY'd our little galley kitchen and I had one of the counters put at table height (no room for a table) and it's so much easier for me. Cake mixing was a revelation when I didn't have to reach my arm up and over the edge of the bowl.

Being short isn't great professionally. I'm in a male dominated profession and when ad hoc stand up meetings happen that I want to be part of I have to really push myself into them and force people to direct attention downwards as well as across. Networking at conferences is harder as well when you can't see beyond the immediate wall of backs in front of you to sus who else is around.

AwkwardAadvark · 15/08/2024 09:21

I'm 5 foot 3 and know lots of women smaller than me? I get comments that surprise me as i dont think im tiny and even if I was nothing can be done about it.

I think it's worse being a short man. Virtually every women out there filters OLD by saying over six foot (arbitrarily) when only about 1/5 men actually are.

Yes I think you're right. I never cared about what height any boyfriend was and my husband now is not especially tall (5'7")
I don't understand women who are so specific about men's height when it would be seen as rude for a guy to dismiss any women for theirs. It's not something any of us are in control of any more than we are skin colour, natural eye colour or natural hair colour. Ok to have a preference of course but outright excluding isn't right.

Howlongisittomynextholiday · 15/08/2024 08:53

Oh and another thing, my Mum was 5ft 1.5 (that 0.5 was very important to her).

She is now way smaller than me - the shrinkage as you age is real!

Readmorebooks40 · 15/08/2024 08:53

Also short - positive - we can wear some kids clothes and shoes which are cheaper! 🎉 Concerts suck though.

Shardlake63 · 15/08/2024 08:49

Another shortie here - 5ft in my socks.
My main issues are supermarket shelves and clothes. Everything I seem to want at the supermarket is at a shelf height that is difficult for me to reach. I get sick of having to ask taller people to reach things down for me. It makes me feel like a child.
And clothes, why is everything so bloody long?? Dresses and skirts are always dragging on the floor, and don't get me started on sleeve lengths. I usually have to buy tops and jumpers with three-quarter sleeves, which are pretty much full length on me. Most full length tops require the arm length of a gorilla. My knuckles would be scraping on the ground.
I know petite ranges are available, but the choices are very limited and the things I like never seem to be in the petite size.

Howlongisittomynextholiday · 15/08/2024 08:48

I'm 5ft 0 and 7st 10.

I also feel the pain of having to eat reduced calories and do a fair bit of exercise to maintain a healthy weight. I am also resigned to only ever buying petite clothing, which is frustrating as brands never offer as much choice in petite as they do in regular sizes.

Funniest thing that happened to me in Thailand this year, was being told I was cute, and looked just like a doll by a lovely Thai lady who was smaller and daintier than me. I'm 50 years old!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/08/2024 08:38

6ft DH doesn't tend to think about his height- because the world fits him.

He can actually drive any car because he can actually reach the pedals. He doesn't need a sun visor on the sun visor. The seatbelt doesn't cut across his neck. He's not dangerously close to airbags (and being male never had a baby bump rubbing on the steering wheel before getting too vast to fit behind the steering wheel and reach the pedals and have to stop driving) Some of these nusiences are actually fairly major health and safety issues.

I CBA to go to crowded events because they all just turn into arm pit conventions and I don't get much out of them other than stimulating my sense of smell.

Fixed shower heads often spray water out too wide by my height 5'2" so I end up shuffling around between the dribbles.

Why are hand driers often set at shoulder heght so you have to do some kind of Tyranasaurus/ funky chicken move with your elbows to stop the water trickling down your sleeves.

I've had people talk literally over my head with questions that should have been directed at me. I frequently used have colleagues failing to identify me amongst my class of y7s/ y8s which was incredibly undermining. Until I had children in my 30s, I often had people attempting to enter queues ahead of me because they didn't register that I was there/ an adult. I'm not noticing myself "becoming invisible" as I get older because I always was invisible!

It's depleting when life is the wrong size. When a food shop is more like an agility course (behold my skill at the chest freezer dive as I vault up-side down to reach the last frozen peas). It's uncomfortable to painful when the only furniture that fits is old theatre seats because most furniture has "lumbar support" half way up your back, you're slumped so that the front of the seat isn't digging into your calves forcing them to wraggle in the air or just good old dangly legs because you've never been able to confirm if the legend of the foot rest is true (is it a leg-end or a legend?)

Life not fiiting applies to tall people, but the world is gradually shifting to taller, and that's making short people issues harder.

And no, cheaper children's shoes are not a perk. I don't have the taste of a 9yo, and at twice the weight and being designed to be grown out of, they don't last long.

Yes, I have a gorgeous teenage son but he said the other day, I have to prepare myself that I may never get a girlfriend because of my height 😪😪

5ft 2 here. I’m 11 stone 12 with 32H boobs and just look so fat. I exercise way more than my friends. And I eat less too (don’t drink booze or do takeaways either) and perimenopause means it just is so hard to come off.

I also had twins. My bump was ridiculous on my frame.

I hate clothes.

heavy shopping bags drag on floor if I hold them as my thighs are so stumpy.

olderbutwiser · 15/08/2024 08:21

This may have been said already but kitchen worktops and cookers are all soo high - I watched my 6’ DH mash potatoes and realised it’s a completely different experience for him. And that thing that chefs do flipping food in a frying pan would be doable if the worktop was a foot lower.

5’ 2”, so at the taller end of short, but still with my nose in everyone’s armpits at parties. ugh.

Wishimaywishimight · 15/08/2024 08:11

Can't relax properly in a fancy (bigger than usual) hotel bath without sliding underwater!

DivergentTris · 15/08/2024 08:10

5ft 3 yes I agree it has its downsides but I can't honestly see it as bad as alot of posters on here seem to do.
It doesn't bother me much at all.

DaemonMoon · 15/08/2024 08:09

I used the loos at a beach this summer. As I came out a woman said 'you are so tiny.' In my 40s, I didn't really know what to do with that. I get it from DD and her friends. Not had it from an adult for a while.

Buying alcohol, they may ask for ID then take a real good look at my face and you see the realisation hit them as they take in the lines and chicken neck.

tuttuttutt · 15/08/2024 07:39

@Gorgeousfeet I agree it's very shallow. I'm relieved I'm healthy /happy couldn't care less about being a bit short

Exactly. My beautiful Dad has just had a cancer diagnosis and health and happiness is the most important factor in everything.

The rest is purely the sprinkles on the top.

I'm getting more annoyed with my height the older I get. I have to use a step stool to reach the top shelf of my fridge and don't have enough low cupboards to keep everything in my reach. I'm sick of it now - I don't think i'm going to get any taller than 5ft as I am now 57 🤔. 34h bra size and look fatter because my boobs are nearly at my waist. My poor old mum is now about 4ft (no exaggeration) as she has shrunk as she gets older.

My mum used to be 4' 11.5" (again, to her the half was very important!). She's definitely heading closer to the floor as she ages!

Conversely, I'm 5' 11", and we always used to attract comments when out together, even when I was very young. I caught her up when I was 9, and my daughter did too. My son is now 10, and I'm pretty sure that he's now taller than her too (we'll find out when we see them in a couple of weeks).

We both have issues with clothes, as getting stuff in the right proportions is difficult for both of us, especially as my height is all in my legs!

I don't mind helping in supermarkets; I'd rather people didn't climb shelves!

This thread makes me sad for my daughter. She's been under paediatrics for two years due to a long term condition (unrelated), but as they weigh and measure her every month we know she has only grown half an inch in that time. Shoe size has stayed the same. Her consultants are therefore satisfied that she has done growing at 5ft 1. I'm 5ft 6, her dad 5ft 8 so we're hardly giants but she hates being so short. Her much younger sister is already the same height so will grow taller. Reading these comments makes me feel quite worried about how she will feel growing older (she's currently 16).

Don’t worry I am absolutely fine being 5’1 1/2 (I add the 1/2 as it’s a bit of a family joke so I always mention it)

I have never wanted to be taller. Sometimes I have wanted to be slimmer, but we often want something different about ourselves. I have always wanted either much curlier hair or straight hair.
I have never had slim legs but I wanted longer slimmer legs without being taller which would have made me look a really weird shape 😆

I am aware that being smaller I have often been treated with more kindness/others have been more protective that’s been fine with me

ok had to alter clothes at times (petite trousers have always been a bit short) and a few inconveniences but many of us are absolutely fine and happy being a shorty

pinkstripeycat · 15/08/2024 07:52

Taller people really don’t realise how difficult life can be for smaller people.

I didn’t realise how difficult things could be until I read this thread!

Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:41

I'm getting very close to buying a grabbing stick for when I go to the supermarket.
Stupid top shelves.....

I ask a passing tall person, usually v happy to help. I used to be 5'2", now I'm 5'1". Beware shrinkage as you age! Yes, I do yoga.

pinkstripeycat · 15/08/2024 07:49

I can see have tiny folk find things difficult. My DSIS is 5’2, mum is 5’3, dad was only 5’7”.

From the other side: I’m 5’10 and the only problem I had years ago was getting trousers long enough. Once I was in my 30s long leg trousers started appearing in the shops and now most places have a tall section. I love helping people in the supermarket who can’t reach the top shelf.

My sons are 6’2 and 6’5. The tallest has problems buying trousers but the internet makes it a bit easier. We do have to pay extra on flights for the exit seat as he’s never be able to fit in a normal plane seat. He does sometimes have to duck going through doors. He never gets lost in a crowd.

Gabby10 · 15/08/2024 07:39

@Gorgeousfeet I don't actually hate being small, I like it if anything but some things do annoy me about it. I mean as you can see from my PP I also don't help myself 😂. Just glad I'm quite flexible so can still jump on the kitchen sides when I need to get stuff from the top of the cupboards. Also came in handy when I was painting the kitchen ceiling and could stand on the kitchen sides and do it without hitting my head on the ceiling! There are perks 100%!

Gabby10 · 15/08/2024 07:36

@treacledan71 😂😂 I use to have a chest freezer and I wasn't that upset when it broke as I too had the fear of falling in it!

Although the house I now live in came with build in fridge freezer and I can't reach anything on the top shelf of the fridge- I have a step but love making life hard and just using a spatula for something to pull stuff off the top shelf and hope I catch it hahaha x

Gorgeousfeet · 15/08/2024 07:23

ghostyslovesheets · 14/08/2024 21:38

But you find the 1/2 inch important to you?

It's not about disliking your body - it's about how difficult it is being short - and how you are treated - uncomfortable seats, clothes that don't fit, etc.

I get that being small can be frustrating, as can being tall. I mean who really wakes up and thinks wow.. I love my height etc etc

All these posts lately, such as pictures of faces , aesthetic ones, just all seem so shallow.
I don’t know why I click . And I certainly don’t know why I comment because I them need to pop on my hard hat because of the responses I get.

Yes the half inch is important to
me but certainly not enough to post on a public platform about.
