To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

Yes I agree you might be able to get away with the dishwasher thing for another few years but then when there is more that you using it, the system will fail.

I can't believe how many people have dishwashers, does anybody hand wash any more? I've never owned one to have an opinion on that bit

Carrot thing - no just no

Airer thing - ok if you have the space but I enjoy folding clothes so... (and washing dishes apparently)

Here I am - another hand washer of dishers! Never had a dishwasher, never wanted one. I have used them at my workplaces over the years, and that has been enough to convince me that I don't want one at home.

With older kids I think your dishwasher plan would soon become a debacle in my house. Teens and teens' friends cook and use kitchen items. They'd find the system confusing and likely embarrassing so they'd just pile dishes up (given the dishwasher was full) and they'd take new stuff from the cupboard rather than fussing around trying to figure out what was clean and dirty in the dishwasher. It would mean much more work for DH and I.

I think it is working for you because only you use the system?

NannyChirley · 14/08/2024 21:27

Sorry but all very weird

RavenhairedRachel · 14/08/2024 21:25

If you just snap the ends off the carrots they must take ages to cook unless you use really small carrots.
The clothes I couldn't live with clothes airers out all over the house
Dishwasher A no from me mixing clean and dirty pots. However the guy that plumbed in our Dishwasher said the new trend is to have 2 dishwashers then you have a clean and a dirty one .You use them alternately that seems a good idea.

Everydayimhuffling · 14/08/2024 20:36

I don't necessarily think it's grim. I largely think it's a false economy. You're wasting more time cooking whole carrots than it would take me to chop them. Also, onion, celery, and carrot is the base of lots of things we make and they need chopping for that. Similarly with the dishwasher, it seems really wasteful to run it with clean things in it. The airer, I often leave clothes on until the next load needs to go out, but I have to put stuff away at that point to make room. I'm happy to grab stuff from the airer before that though.

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

Because it takes longer to cook a whole carrot, and less than a minute to chop it. So you're wasting time and money there.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Because it takes less than three minutes to empty the dishwasher. I usually empty it while the kettle is boiling etc. We don't run it every night as there's only two of us. We load it as we go, keep the door closed and probably run it every 2 - 3 days. Clean the filter and put it on a empty wash cycle every month. Keeping dirty plates next to clean ones sounds gross. I'm happy to give up probably the total of less than ten minutes of my week to have clean plates in the cupboard. It would also increase our bills to run it every day.

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

This is fair enough if you have a spare room and are happy with it. It's not unhygienic like the dishwasher thing. I like to put stuff away as I have a system and know where everything is. Our spare room is used quite a lot so wouldn't want airers cluttering it up.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/08/2024 20:04

I don't really understand why you bother taking the ends off the carrots at all. Why not just boil them whole and cut the ends off afterwards? I mean, I scrub and/or peel my carrots (depending on the carrots) and chop them or slice them or roast them whole depending on the recipe, but it wouldn't do you any harm since you'd be boiling the whole lot.
Dishwasher I find a bit weird but I guess if you are very limited in what you cook with it might work. We use different pots, pans, dishes, glasses most days depending on what we are eating or drinking.
The drying rack makes sense if you have the space and don't have too many clothes to fit.

Lollipop81 · 14/08/2024 19:49

If it works for you then why not. I only put the dishwasher on when full to save money so that method wouldn’t work for me.
if I lived in my own with a spare room I would def do what you do. With absolute pleasure in fact, I have a small family and washing is endless so can only dream about that 😂
as for carrots I don’t eat them so can’t comment ha ha but if it saves time, why the hell not

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:28

@AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds yes they would just stay in there, no harm done!

But that means you are constantly washing clean dishes and cutlery, a complete waste of energy and tablets.

poppymango · 14/08/2024 19:48

Weird and lazy. And if I’m honest, I would feel very uncomfortable around all of this.

How very dare you? I'm not that old.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 14/08/2024 19:40

I think it’s lazy OP, but you’re on your own with a small child so I don’t think people should judge. You do you.

Ethylred · 14/08/2024 19:40

I'm a slattern but I'm glad that I shall never eat off your dishes.

I once saw, possibly on Facebook a video of a huge kitchen with 2 dishwashers. Whilst watching I was like, why do you need 2 of them. But once they explained that they rotate each one and leave the door open to the one that has the dirty dishes in, I thought it was quite clever.

I think your system will work fine in all ways if you live alone but it would be difficult with a house full of people.

I love the two dishwasher thing. It just becomes the clean cupboard and the dirty cupboard. It doesn't take up any extra space as you don't need the cupboard space to unload it into. Doesn't use any more electricity as you only put it on as often as you would usually and costs barely any more to factor this in when having a new kitchen. It also means if one breaks you aren't completely without. There is no downside and I will die on this hill.

The carrots are just snapped where they will snap, as close to the end as possible. It’s about a pound for a huge pack so hardly wasteful!

I am surprised so many people think these things are grim. I’m now wondering if my friends laughing about this means they actually think I’m grim behind closed doors. Kind of wish I hadn’t shared it now!!!

I think your friends will think twice before eating at your house. The dishwasher situation is disgusting. I mean ...there's lazy and there's lazy....

vickylou78 · 14/08/2024 19:33

Op have to be honest the dishwasher thing is grim.....you've either got dirty dishes piling up on the counter top all day or you've got dirty things going in and dripping over the clean things!! Also washing things repeatedly even if they've not been used surely isn't good for your pans, they'll wear out quicker etc.

The carrot thing. Must take ages to cook so couldn't be arsed with that and wouldn't want to waste half a carrot if it didn't snap right!

Clothes on the clothes horse wouldn't work here as we always need space for the wet stuff to be hung. Think may only work for a small family.

I'm not surprised your friends laughed!

JLT24 · 13/08/2024 19:14

I don’t get the dishwasher one. I don’t use the same dishes every day so would end up with a mixture of dirty and clean dishes or rewashing dishes that haven’t been used or a big pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen waiting for all the clean dishes in the dishwasher to be used? We empty the dishwasher every morning so that it can be stacked throughout the day keeping the kitchen looking tidy at all times and smells away.

I do exactly the same and have plenty of cupboards and pan drawers to store everything.

BunnyLake · 14/08/2024 19:23

I’m all for making life easier, I buy most of my veg frozen and ready sliced/chopped so I never have to slice a carrot or chop an onion. I never peel potatoes anymore and I buy frozen mash.

The dishwasher aspect would not work for me. Yes I don’t always empty the dishwasher immediately and will take out a plate or cup but I’d never mix it with plates than need a wash. That sounds confusing and unworkable to me.

OhcantthInkofaname · 14/08/2024 19:04

I put clean dishes away. Then I store the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. I hate having a sink full of dirty dishes.

I use the clothes dryer. I prefer having a whole closet or drawers to choose my wardrobe for the day.

I thought we chopped vegetables to make them a uniform size. Carrots are not uniform and would cook unevenly.

VeneziaJ · 14/08/2024 18:53

Dartmoorcheffy · 13/08/2024 19:09

Ummm, weird and lazy

So you put dirty pots back in with the clean??

Seriously, it takes a second to slice the top off a carrot.

The clothes thing again, pure laziness.

Judgemental and rude much 🙄

Poppingmad123 · 14/08/2024 18:46

I don’t think these things make much sense tbh as none of them are hard or take up much time but it’s up to you how you live. And it very much depends on your household. As family of 4, I wouldn’t do any of those things. Actually never done it when I was on my own either. Ok it is weird 😁

H0PI · 14/08/2024 18:29

I love your unusual ways OP! I think it's brilliant that you are doing your own fucking thing. ❤️

Tumbleweed101 · 14/08/2024 18:23

I think living with a family and living alone or in a couple make things different too. I could probably do what you do with just me or me and a partner but not with children all cooking and eating at different times and too many clothes with no spare room to dry in.
