I’ve just done 3 weeks of solid Atkins, not cheated, really tried a d lost nothing! Not even a measley 0.1 kg! I actually weigh slightly more than I did when started. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m fed up of all these “diets”. Can someone please advise me? I stayed away from fruits even! I had such a craving. Just spoke to my sister whose managed to lost 10lb since start of summer eating all the foods I was told on atkins and keto boards that were to be avoided - bread, fruits, pastries. Where am I going wrong? Any advice please.

The calculator also has a recommendation for extreme weight loss, but that number is stupidly low.

I would not recommend eating less than 1200kcal/ day, personally. I am your height and much heavier (also calorie counting again to get back), but when I weighed what you do now I would easily lose 1-1.5kg/ week on 1400-1500kcal.

I've found Slimpod has helped change my mindset around food. It's cut down the craving, can't stop snacking, out of control feeling and also helped with my sweet tooth. It's a meditation style app you listen to at night. I didn't find that helped alone but it did motivate me to do intermittent fasting, 16:8, which I find fairly manageable and has meant I've lost weight.

I've just put your data into a calculator and it came out with this:

Edit, it's not loading the image.

Maintain weight, 1667kcal
Mild weight loss 1417kcal
Moderate weight loss 1167kcal

Edited

Thank you! I used mayo clinic and calorie calculator and another one and they have higher! This one seems better. Thick you do much

On average all websites are saying 1950 calories. So should I aim for around 1400? Or is that too much? I’m thinking 1200 then see how it goes I can adjust higher or lower

Unless you are extremely active you aren't going to lose weight eating 1950 calories. Most women need less than that to maintain let alone lose.

With any diet - keto, intermittent fasting, Atkins etc they only work if you restrict calories and are in calorie deficit

Take a photo on your phone every time you put something in your mouth even if it's just a couple of DH chips or a handful of grapes or a coffee & then you can see where you are going wrong - go over the meals & snacks photos to see where you are underestimating the calories.

Have you tried doing exercise ? I always find it easier to burn off more and then able to eat whatever

nameeCha · 12/08/2024 18:46

How many calories should I be eating? So many websites giving me different amounts! I’m 42, 5 foot 3 and weigh 76kg right now

Hectorscalling · 12/08/2024 18:45

Atkins, intermittent fasting, omad, soup diets, clean eating etc only help you lose weight it you are eating less calories than you burn.

They are all ways of cutting calories. If you don’t eat less calories while doing them it you won’t lose weight.

All the food that ‘the boards’ say will put on weight, that your sister ate, will only put on weight on a person if you are eating more calories than you burn.

The problem is you are trying to do a ‘diet’ and believing it will work because it just does. It won’t if you eat too many calories.

BashfulClam · 12/08/2024 18:44

Calorie deficit. I lost 4 stone in 6 months last year but judgvtexjoibg calories. Nothing will work if you are overeating. I eat anything I want within my allowance. No fads just tracking. Have a look at Sean Casey online.

Harassedevictee · 12/08/2024 18:43

@nameeCha the minute you think it is a diet you set yourself up to fail.

What you need to do is make small changes and work out what works for you.

Cutting out food groups is never going to be sustainable for years.

Portion size is important. Swapping for healthier food. Allowing treats but reducing them.

Lincslady53 · 12/08/2024 18:41

I had a similar experience. The thing that has worked for me is cutting out cheese, alcohol and as many carbs as I could. I was told to up my protein intake to help a slow healing wound, so DD bought me a tub of protein powder, so I replaced toast and cereal breakfast for a protein milkshake. Lunch another milkshake and 3 bits of fruit, banana, peach and satsuma, dinner portion of air fried salmon with a few new potatoes and green veg. If I get hungry I have a satsuma. The killer for me is socialising, so a meal out is followed by strictly following the above for a day or two to get my weight back on track. Lost 2 stone in 18 months, half a stone to go and I will be in the healthy bmi band for the first time in 45 years.

Im really toying with Monjaro in all honesty. For a weight reset whilst eating healthy and introducing exercise. Im 17st 6lbs size 18 atm 😫

I started moujaro on the 8th of July at 17:9 and I'm 15:13 now. Go for it!

MouseofCommons · 12/08/2024 18:36

If you haven't increased your activity levels then try that (if physically able to). And not just weights, that seems to be too trendy at the moment, ideally you need cardio and weights and something else.

FusionChefGeoff · 12/08/2024 18:36

How much water are you drinking? Keto / Atkins rely on lots and lots of water to help break the fat down. Someone did explain it to me but I can't remember exactly why now!

Forgodsakethinkofthekids · 12/08/2024 18:32

Mounjaro.
The only 'diet' that has ever worked for me. 4 weeks in 16 pounds down with little effort.
I totally sympathise.
I could never stick to a doet- my willpower was zero and I'd get weak and shaky when trying to cut down then have an almighty binge.
I am type 2 diabetic BTW. This has just removed the sugar craving noise for me. I can hardly believe it.

I have lost 2 stone on mfp but nearly every day is like this. Still feel it’s worth it as I’m a slim person now, but god it’s hard

Sounds like a miserable existence if you're feeling like this every single day.

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 12/08/2024 18:30

I am at the start of a weight loss journey. Have gained 4.5 stone in about 4 years and desperately want to shift it as look and feel awful.

I have lost 8lb in the last two weeks. I have just had to massively reduce the amount I eat and have cut out alcohol entirely. It has been very hard, but I feel like I am adjusting to the reduced portion sizes and lack of snacks now.

I love food and I'm definitely an emotional eater, so I am addressing that too.

TonTonMacoute · 12/08/2024 18:29

Agree with PPs, the only thing that has worked for me is calorie counting, and you have to stick to it scrupulously - weigh things, measure things, record every mouthful.

The thing is a it's a right pain in the arse for several weeks but actually you soon get a proper feel for how many potatoes/how much yoghurt/how many snacks (yes really) equates to how many calories, and you soon build up a regular repertoire of meals you know are lowish calorie 500-600 is what I aim for.

I did this combined with the 5:2 which helped on two levels, firstly it's a good way to cut weekly calories and secondly it reduced my appetite so even on non fast days I didn't want to eat so much.

Lmnop22 · 12/08/2024 18:20

Weigh absolutely everything and triple check “portion sizes”.

So often a packet will be a tiny amount but say “contains 3 portions” or something and you’ll accidentally read the calories as being for the whole pack not 1/3.

Or you’ll pour out “a bit” of milk or juice or cereal and assume it’s “about 30g or whatever.

Do the maths with a realistic defecit goal and you literally cannot not lose weight.

susiedaisy1912 · 12/08/2024 18:14

You absolutely have to track calories op. Eggs in butter for breakfast is madness. Butter is pure fat nobody needs that in their diet.

5128gap · 12/08/2024 18:12

Calorie count OP. Find out your daily requirements for your age, height, weight and lifestyle and reduce it by 500 a day. Count accurately and you can't go wrong.

Honourspren · 12/08/2024 18:11

@notanotheronenow So what you're saying is that eating less does work, whether obese or not.

OP, calorie counting is absolutely the way forward. Every diet essentially comes back down to calories in vs calories out. Yes, there are differences in how much work your body does simply digesting certain foods (therefore making them "better" choices), but noone can deny the simple science behind that. And yes, it is harder once you've been obese because psychology plays into the whole thing, too, which is one of the reasons why losing weight fast rarely ever works long term.

Other things like exercise help tone the body, up your daily calorie needs, but you cannot outrun too much food.

So your diet hasn't failed, you just need to adjust it and make it more sensible. Less of the calorie-dense food, more of the veg. And for heaven's sake, add some carbs, your body needs them, too.

Mrsttcno1 · 12/08/2024 18:11

It’s not the diet that makes a difference OP, it’s the calories. I could eat a big mac meal everyday and still lose weight as long as I was under my calories each day- granted I’d not be able to eat much else each day and would be hungry, but I’d lose weight.

Calculate your total daily expenditure (TDEE Calculators online for rough guide), minus say 200 cals to start with. Eat whatever you want but within those calories.
