It's given as advice on here all the time but who has ever dialled 999 and was it for something major?

I've called for football fans fighting and letting off flares at cars, so genuine emergency.

OP posts:

999 a few times. Someone smashed our front door in one night. Totally random, by the time we got downstairs they were gone. Another time a man fell asleep at the wheel of his car and crashed it right outside our house. Also an ex partner of our neighbour was shouting and banging on her door in the middle of the night. She wasn't replying to our calls or messages to check she was OK. Police always came quickly and were polite and helpful.
Used 101 when dh was pick pocketed and when ds had his phone stolen. Wasn't expecting them to do anything but you need a crime number for insurance. With ds phone he knew who took it and turns out the kid was well known to various services, including police who were already building cases against him. Didn't benefit us in anyway but maybe the information ds gave about him was helpful.

I've called while driving for someone who had road rage and was trying to make me crash

FOJN · 11/08/2024 10:19

Called 999 for a car which was veering all over the road and pavement. I narrowly avoided being run over. Four other people had seen the same car within the space of a few minutes and also called. Was asked to go to the police station to make a statement. The driver was charged and convicted of drink driving.

Pre 101 I called the local police station twice, once to report indecent exposure and the second time to report a road rage incident I witnessed.

wombpaloumbpa · 11/08/2024 10:19

I've called 101 for kids riding dirt bikes around in the local nature reserve in the early hours.
Also when our house seemed to be getting cases for burglary.

I've called 999 when I thought someone was being attacked by a dog.

OneTC · 11/08/2024 10:18

Never IRL but probably hundreds of times for work, shoplifting, assault and burglary

Yes I’ve called for a brawl in the street and also when there were intruders on a neighbours drive

I’ve also called 101 for a herd of escaped cows causing an obstruction in a country lane in the dark.

Edited

Similar - although it was a massive pile of dumped tyres, on a NSL pitch-black country road that I knew boy racers frequented. The selfishness of some people astounds me.

hookiewookie29 · 11/08/2024 10:18

Had a car and caravan flip over in front of us on the M5. Called the police- it was across all 3 lanes and other drivers were still trying to get past at 70mph! Nobody was hurt and luckily the police were there within minutes.
My daughter has called the police 3 times, once when a couple of lads on bikes were smashing the windows on her car with a hammer- no police turned up, she got a call off them 4 days later- and twice to a bloke living opposite who had something against her and threatened her! She's only 21! Police had a severe word with him and he's kept his mouth shut since...

Called an ambulance for a friends flatmate who was pregnant and was bleeding quite badly. Sadly she lost the baby.

You don't phone 999 'for the police' that's the emergency number.

To report crimes etc it's 101.

The OP is asking when and what posters have phoned 999 for the police emergency response. 101 is for non urgent.

I've reported my youngest missing (we got her back safe and well). A neighbour being broken into. Dangerous anti social behaviour. My DH during cancerous brain tumours and psychotic episodes.

HappyLittleNarwhal · 11/08/2024 10:17

When we found a man who had been assaulted lying in the street; we did CPR but he died before the ambulance came.

When I woke up at 2am and my 12 year old had disappeared.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/08/2024 10:16

Following a very obviously drunk driver. They asked me to keep following them so that the police officer could find them.

I’ve also called through work when I had a genuine concern for the welfare of a client and their suicidal thoughts.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 11/08/2024 10:16

Twice, to report a drink driver and to report someone breaking into a neighbours car in the middle of the night. The car thief was arrested, not sure if they got the drunk driver.

When a boy of about 7 was thrown out of his house in the middle of the night and was crying to be let back in. I was always worried about him and had previously made anonymous calls to the school and social services but that particular incident gave me a good reason to ring 999. When I was reporting it on the call the handler said they could hear how distressed he was in the background (despite being a good 20 or so houses down the road). The police were there in about 4 minutes and took him and his family away in their cars. I never saw any of them again and I just really hope he’s happier now somehow.

PollyannaWhittier · 11/08/2024 10:15

My friend and I did when we were walking home from work late one night and in the front room of a house we could see a man and a woman having an argument, every time she tried to stand up he grabbed her by the shoulder / neck and threw her back to the floor. She didn't fight back and was just crying. The police came, asked us a couple of questions, then rang the bell and went in to speak to them at which point we left.

A few years ago I saw a man shouting aggressively at a woman in the street (persistently). I called the police because I was worried for her safety. They said they’d send someone. I wish I’d been brave enough to actually intervene, but I wasn’t.

I did try to intervene once; at least, I asked the bloke what he thought he was playing at. They both told me to piss off and mmob!

Lastyoungrenegade · 11/08/2024 10:13

I had only ever called the police once before in my life when a random man was threatening my dad with a knife when I was 11 years old (dad was stabbed, had his wallet stolen, but stab wound wasn't deep and he was fine thankfully).

But then in March this year, new neighbours moved in and I've called police for drug dealing, dad hitting the children, verbal abuse from both mum and dad towards the children, excessive arguing and fighting, threatening behaviour, dad smashing up the garden and trying to smash windows. Last weekend I called because mum sent me a message asking me to call the police, he was hitting her and threatening to kill her/the children/the pets. I called again when I could hear the oldest child the next morning shouting for help. Dad had been arrested the night before, mum had overdosed and the kids couldn't wake her up. They have had 4 older children removed from their care but the 4 younger children remain. Dad has been arrested lots but still keeps coming back. Mum is clearly vulnerable but always takes him back and does her fair share of screaming abuse at the kids. It's a nightmare and we are thankfully moving in a few weeks! I worry what will happen to those poor children.

When my neighbour and her partner went from arguing to furniture (?) crashing...

Allthehorsesintheworld · 11/08/2024 10:12

DD not home at 2 am ( pre mobile days, new driver in my car)
Car parked up with 4 people in it along our farm track. Gave registration and police said it came up as a tractor in Essex ( nowhere near Essex)
Road accident.
Glass left all over the road after a minor car accident.

Willmafrockfit · 11/08/2024 10:11

have called the fire brigade twice, one for a fire i started, a bonfire in the garden, which set alight the neighbours newly creosoted fence, very nice firemen!
ambulance for dd friend who i unwittingly fed peanut butter to when she was allergic

TyrannasaurusJex · 11/08/2024 10:11

Called 999 on the M40 late at night when the car in front of us was veering all over the lanes. Got straight through. They advised us to continue to follow at a safe distance and a police car was with us within 5 mins and pulled him over safely. Was very satisfying all round.

Blink282 · 11/08/2024 10:10

3 times when people being assaulted on the street

Once for a burglary in progress

Twice for car accidents

And two calls to the fire brigade for fires.

None of them involving me, and that’s over a 30 year span.

Expatfamily · 11/08/2024 10:09

Driving past a white van parked in a lay-by on a country road. A man had a woman pinned against the van and blood was pouring from her face the way she eyes stared into mine. We turned around and called the police. He dragged her into the van and was trying to loose us by kept changing direction.

The police stayed on the phone while we were following him - which I was surprised they were encouraging tbh. The rural team called us back as they were trying to find him (we long lost him) then they called back for a statement that lasted over an hour. We never heard another thing.

I think about her often. I hope we distracted him enough that he stopped taking his anger out on her. I hope she got away. I hope she went to the police and he’s behind bars.

When I found an elderly neighbour dead in her garden

Miloandfreddy · 11/08/2024 10:08

Had to when my dad died. He had a massive bleed to the brain and was unresponsive.
