To think a lot of homes are “soulless” and all people care about is size?

I love homes that are full of personality, stuff picked up around the world in trips, fleamarket finds, family objects, homes that are not perfect but keep your eyes “busy” when looking and fully reflect the life of people that live within them and make you feel warm when you go in.
I very rarely come across such homes, the majority of the ones I see (in RL and online) tend to be very boring with no personality whatsoever and people mainly seem to be focussed on buying the biggest possible places with their money and then upgrading/extending etc rather than enjoying what they have and make it “theirs”.
Does anyone else feel this way about home decor?

Does it matter what other people live in so long as you love your own house?

BurntBroccoli · 11/08/2024 16:24

I agree OP.
So much grey on Right Move, grey carpets, walls, kitchens and tiles.
Then the "Bath", "Clean" and "Live, Love, Laugh" wall 'art'.
It all looks so cold and not tranquil at all.

I personally can't bear clutter and tat . A house full of stuff from a flea market would have me on edge, all that dust! No thank you.
I'm not that interested in decor, I like my home to be neat, tidy and functional, not a trip hazard!
Each to their own. Luckily I'm not as judgemental as OP 🙄

Yep, same! Having too much "stuff" cluttering up the place would make me feel the exact opposite of homely and relaxed. But I accept that other people feel differently and so live and let live and all that 😬

SarahWren · 11/08/2024 15:53

I don’t know anybody who can afford to buy a big house tbh.
I know some people who put a lot of effort into how their home looks and lots who don’t.
When I moved into my house a few years ago, I just kept all the decoration the way the previous owners had it. I haven’t had the money or energy to do anything with it. But if I did, I wouldn’t go for second hand stuff or anything chintzy looking (even though I used to like that kind of aesthetic when I was younger). I would just paint it some nice colours and buy a load of stuff from ikea. I’m not that bothered by what my house looks like or says about me or anything like that.

I was referring to artesan pieces and locally produced crafts, not junk you buy in the souvenir shops, btw.

Those locally produced crafts and artisan pieces are usually mass produced, believe me the beautiful wood craved pieces that you think are a one off, they have another 100 waiting for the next tourist to buy.

Ponkpinkpink15 · 11/08/2024 15:51

@Spicegirl1234

i suggest, if you want your 'eyes to be busy* you buy a book or stay home. It's not anyone else's duty to 'entertain you'.

Goodness this has put so many people on the defensive!!!😲

It could be an interesting discussion if people can stop being offended.

I think fashion plays a much bigger part in home decor now than it ever used to and I think that is down to the collaboration between shops and Instagram type sites that use influencers to literally influence people into changing decor according to fashions.

And because of that I think it's also an age thing. Younger people tend to be more minimal and older people who tend not to use those sites so much might have more eclectic tastes.

OP

I am going to judge your house is my idea of hell, trinkets picked up from travels are usually tacky and mass produced for people like you that think you are superior. Clutter collects dust and looks awful, those colourful rugs, books when were they cleaned?

I have a large house that in my opinion is tasteful and has a few pieces that the decor is centre around.

My house does not have any inherited pieces as my Nan knock off g plan furniture was fit for the skip when she died.

I like and admire a lot of different styles, even the very "clean" ones. I cannot keep a house orderly like that and I admire it in other people.

My house would be your dream. Lots of mismatched furniture which nevertheless works together, dark academia style mixed with steampunk elements in the rooms I have completed (not many tbf), bookshelves overflowing because I'm building up my personal library and rarely ever get rid of any books I own. I am even painting a mural on one wall, just because. Some people will absolutely hate my house, but I really like it and those who have visited have been positive about it (or had the sense to be polite as they wouldn't be reinvited otherwise).

I do have an awful lot of clutter and it can be hard to keep on top of that, but it is mainly due to my creative mind, so I have a lot of craft materials and DIY stuff everywhere you look.

And it is partially down to lack of money, because I do everything myself. I just don't have the money to pay other people to do it for me. So it has character, but that character is mine, so to speak.

people lead such different lives, surely if you’re in someone’s home you already know them? Unless you’re a tradesperson going round judging folks on their decor and thinking they are going to kill you.

how very odd.

The references to rightmove suggest that many people are making these judgements about properties when they are looking to buy, which is fair enough?

I often look on RM and despair at the number of period properties that have been cleared of all period features and filled with identikit cream and beige ‘luxe’ interiors. There are 18th century Scottish castles decorated in much the same style as Marriott hotels. You would never guess that you were in an historic building

All these people pretending not to be judged but being very judgemental to you. Yes I hate homes without personality , they scream serial killer. I'd rather dislike your taste of individual decor than think you don't have any personality

Surely being a serial killer is a whole personality though?!

Mespher · 11/08/2024 13:16

A lot of modern kitchens look like operating theatres, completely clear with an island that looks like an operating table.

I agree with those who don't like clutter. What concerns me more about housing is how many are more concerned about making money on property.

What, why, it’s a massive investment, likely the biggest you will ever make, it will possibly support your retirement, likely be your kids inheritance, something you spend yout hard earned on maintaining and improving. would you not be interested in if you’re making money or not. You’d have to be off your rocker to not care.

I don’t like clutter.

I don’t like clinical.

There’s a balance to be found.

Mimilamore · 11/08/2024 13:07

I agree with poster. People seem to buy a " look" does nothing for me and I find it so boring, give me a home which shows a life lived and interesting "stuff"

The thing is, it's only bland depending on how you decorate.

I have white walls, furniture, wooden, uniform picture frames in neat gallery blocks. All my colour comes from bold furniture, cutrtains, cushions and throws, and the actual art in the frames. I just have very little of it to maintain space. I also have some wild wallpaper but in muted, tasteful colours and in purposefully deigned nooks e.g. built in shelves with candles that light the space up beautifully. I also have discreet diffusers so it smells wonderful.

But if you looked at it on rightmove, a lot of people would consider it a soulless, minimal white box. But when the lights are down, the scents are on and world is shut out, it's a cosy, clutter free haven.

The trouble is, people that hate the minimalist thing don't often appreciate how cosy and comfortable a home can be and how thoughtfully designed some homes are. Depending on where you sit in my lounge, your gaze may fall on the tv(!), art, plants, a small collection of books I want to read etc, all with beautiful bookmarks ready to use. There is also always somewhere to put a mug (on a coaster that I've carefully chosen), a blanket in reach. You just don't see it all when you walk in the door.

I think that sounds gorgeous.

I wish I could decide on a style and stick to it. I have so many clashing style likes (minimalist and calm, colourful and interesting, modern, New England, English country cottage), it drives me mad trying to do Pinterest boards, I need half a dozen homes to accommodate the different styles. I plan on downsizing from a family home to a modern apartment (or small bungalow) and I’m going to have to be more decisive, otherwise it’ll end up an ‘eclectic’ mess lol.

Frasers · 11/08/2024 12:47

Surely it's up to the individual home owners to style their own house to their individual taste...no?

id have assumed so too, not they should decorate to the ops taste, although I understand she appears to think people should or she will judge them.

now there is a thread with people either showing off or slagging each others taste off.

naice.

I wish we could see pictures too!!
I loved looking at WitchyBits!
I really love looking inside homes!
Not brave enough to post mine as it will be too outing, loads of school mums I know use mumsnet who have been inside my house. I don't want them knowing what I post about on mumsnet!

GalileoHumpkins · 11/08/2024 12:38

I like little bits of glassware
Ashtrays with inscriptions
Plastic things on pencils
Bits of mass production
Postcards, pretty pictures
Little bits of plastic
Covering up the bedroom
To show you I´ve been there

IsThisCluttered · 11/08/2024 12:36

I wish we could see pictures of all these houses! I absolutely love looking at interiors & find them endlessly interesting. It's the myriad ways people approach filling a once empty space- such a reflection on so many approaches to the same task!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 11/08/2024 12:33

My house is nice enough when it’s all tidied up but it’s the type of house that you’re happy to have a coffee and a crumbly pastry in without worrying if you spill your drink or stop crumbs. Everything in it is specifically for our taste but it doesn’t follow any sort of design pattern.
