TW - Upsetting information: XL Bully attack *edited by MNHQ

Another xl bully attack, this time it was in my home town last week.
An xl bully ran out of the house down the road and attacked the nearest dog it saw a little dauchshund ripping both its legs off, it took 4 men and two women to get the xl bully off the other dog. The other little dog is alive thanks to the bravery of other people there at the time , however it had to have both legs ( what was left of them ) amputated.
Its extremely sad. The owner of the dauchshund is an elderly lady who was out walking the little dog ans she is utterly traumatised as expected.
The dog has been seized and owners will be prosecuted we have been told.
The reason I'm posting this is because I feel prosecution and dog being seized hasnt really solved anything has it? What is being done to prevent what happened in the first place? Nothing?? These dogs are still attacking / killing animals and children/ adults
Am I being unreasonable in thinking enough isnt being done to get rid of these hurrendous dogs?????

That breed is too vicious, and too many owners cannot handle them. In fact I would say ALL owners wouldn’t be able to handle their XL bully if it snaps. So the risks are just too high.

Why should the lives of people and other animals be put at risk just because someone wants THAT particular dog as a pet? There are lots of other breeds to choose from!

It’s just arrogance to want to own a dangerous dog. Some of these owners are fiercely determined to prove how wonderful and calm this breed is because they are completely deluded.

They’re butt ugly anyway. 🤢 Probably like their owners’ personalities.

Yep, and that made the national press.

Cornwall is a small community - I'm very surprised something so nasty has gone down, has a Just Giving page up and running, and yet there's nothing at all on Facebook, Twitter, Google or the local news agencies at all.

I think it's because it happens with depressing regularity, it doesn't always make the national press. Guy in my mom's home village was jailed earlier this year because in 2022 his XL Bully killed another dog walker's dog, and badly injured the owner (he had tendon damage that required surgery).

XL Bullys have been bred to quickly to turn a profit, and as a result they're dangerously inbred, which can result in mental and behavioural issues. IIRC (and apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere in the thread) , I think research showed that 50% of UK XL Bullies are descended from "Killer Kimbo", an American dog that was born of a brother and sister mating (so already very inbred). One of Kimbo's offspring was used extensively for breeding UK bullies... another one of his offspring killed a four year old. One of his 'grandchildren' killed his owner's father.

That poor little daschund, and the poor owner, and everyone who had to witness it.

EasternEcho · 11/08/2024 09:45

It's not the dogs, it's the owners is akin to guns don't kill people, people do. In that case why not allow unrestricted gun ownership. If everything is down to the people who own dangerous things, why restrict anything?

camperjam · 11/08/2024 09:42

I like dogs and used to have a staffie but I think we've reached a point where all the XL bullies need to be culled.
I'm sure that would mean some dogs would be killed that wouldn't hurt anyone but the risk is too great now. As a breed they are far too unstable to be trusted. The damage they can inflict is horrendous.

Im not trust me its funny how one incident happens then its all they talk about? What about the other dogs? Are u telling me no other breed has killed someone? Research it. Im not saying these cases arent absoloutely devastating they are…but im saying look into why? The dogs in the wrong 100% look at why? Why does the dog behave like that? Have u seen these youngesters criminals most likely that own these dogs? Have u seen the videos onlien where they make them fight each other? This is animal cruelty? These dogs are bread so that they are big dogs they are muscly big dogs but its down to how u train them. I know a family with two of these dogs and 3 kids!!!! The dogs are as nice as can be!!!! So how can u say its propaganda? The breed isnt the problem
the fucking system is anyone can breed no ones regulated! Some dogs esp bulldogs that were bread in corona a breed that everyone wants if they arent bred correctly iv seen the issues with these dogs the health issues…because they are mix bred. These people know nothing!!! This whole systme is a mess. Yes they shouldnt of happened its not the only dog breed thars donenit. So what about the tame americal xlsnthat now have to wear a muzzle round a park? Why? Its disgusting…its lile branding one group of ppl say terrorists and saying that they are thenissue or one race because of terrorism and they need restrictions? No look at their upbringing look at the history? Dogs dont attack for no reason they feel they are allowed to! If an owner has trained the dog right the dogs not gona even attempt it!!!! Tell me im wrong!!!

Darling you sound exactly like that stupid young woman in Limerick spouting almost exactly the same nonsense word for word contained in your post. She met a rather unpleasant fate being torn to pieces by one of her 'babies' while her family watched on cctv and the police couldn't get near to help until the armed response team arrived. Now she was a deeply unpleasant person in life but my god that is a horrific way to go

Where in Cornwall? How the fuck has that not gone viral round the county in a week?

Riots, Olympics...too many XL dog stories already. (Crude, but true.)

Um... nice try ... no I wont ignore the fucking breed a moment , sick to the back teeth of comments like this! Ignore the breed? Ignore that this breed has lock jaw so strong and huge body weight and strength behind it as it is an xl bully that it took 4 men and 3 women to save the dachshund??? And you what want me to ignore the breed ? And do what? Pretend it was a spaniel or something? Get a grip now and stop making excuses for these vile creatures.
One of the women there is close to a friend of mine and she said it was the most horrific thing she has ever witnessed in her life.... that dog was not letting go and was shaking the dauchshund like a rag doll so no we will not pretend that this dog was another breed!!!! Jog on

It is the breed and the fuckwit owners. Both should be put down.

Has anyone heard the saying ' there are no bad dogs, just bad owners'?
Any dog can be dangerous if they are mishandled. It's just that some of the bigger ones are very strong and can cause a lot of damage. Plus I find it's usually the smaller dogs who have very bad attitudes.

This is just not true , breeds have traits good or bad that override any training or control humans can do.
I have many years experience working in a vets and xl bullys stand alone ,we have seen them more than ever lately with the compulsory neutering rules - still no where near the amount we should be seeing though so clearly there are a huge amount of owners not complying, these dogs are terrifying even experienced people such as a vet team would stand no chance if one turned .
Each time we get one out of a kennel it is a leap of faith , they are wired different to anything else .
I am yet to meet anyone in my field who has trust in this breed - man has a lot to answer for.
The dog world is in chaos at the moment.

Ignore the breed a moment.

We're the owners good, responsible people? I'm guessing not. People are a huge part of all problems.

It IS the breed. This is not an upbringing issue. These dogs can't stay sane.

My gosh that’s horrendous
I saw an xl bully near us last week (don’t ever see them here) it was in a work man’s van and was un leashed and un muzzled in his van window slightly a jar both ears totally clipped off it looked evil which is a strange thing to say but I’d never seen one so close it was huge and started barking aggressively whenever another dog walked past! I would have been worried if he’d opened the door if we were near or another dog passing by! Any why clip the ears off!! It looked hideous and much worse than it would already have

I'm wondering if this is the same dog in a work van that would be parked on my driveway at my old house (without permission, I might add) as the description is spot on.

A handful of times I'd be leaving for work and met with the most ghastly looking XL bully thing sitting in the van, window ajar, 2-3 metres from my front door. Cropped ears. It looked like something from a nightmare.

Are you in south east London by any chance? @time2changeCharlieBrown

CandidaAlbicans2 · 11/08/2024 09:25

Even if we eradicated these dogs there would be a replacement, so we need to look at the whole picture of why this happens.

In an ideal world I'd like to see a licence required to own any dog. I say any dog because I want to see an end not only in attacks but also anti-social behaviour eg barking, and cruelty caused by ignorance. There are a huge number of well-meaning but seemingly clueless dog owners around it's staggering. To gain the licence you have to pass an exam on dog behaviour, including recognising danger signals, and dog training, dog care (eg the mental and physical requirements of different types of dogs), and expected costs of dog ownership.

I'd also like a ban on all dog breeding without a licence for similar reasons, and also to try and cut down on the thousands of poor dogs in rescue centres. To breed, one should pass an exam on genetic issues, bloodlines, etc. Before each litter you'd also have to justify why you want to breed that sire with that dam and prove it's in the best interests of the pups. You'd also need to prove you have a waiting list for the pups.

We also need to look at society, and address why certain types of people are drawn to certain breeds. Deal with the underlying causes of what drives the desire to have status dogs. Really look at the bigger picture and deal with the root causes.

Of course none of this will happen because it would be a huge undertaking, and it won't cure every problem, but unless we do it's akin to sticking plasters over a wound that needs stitching.

EvilNextDoor · 11/08/2024 08:39

Recently I have met 5 XL bully’s - they have all been absolute softies. Honestly even I was shocked.

I have also recently met several other medium size dogs with more aggression than you can shake a stick at. Whilst yes they might/might not cause as much damage they will certainly cause some serious damage if they bite.

Genetics and poor ownership have a lot to blame in this.

I'm sure some lions and tigers are 'absolute softies' according to their own owners. But we don't keep the as family pets.

UpUpUpU · 11/08/2024 09:25

I saw one up close recently in a house I was conducting an appointment in. It was in a cage and it was huge and scary looking. The house had small children and a newborn so I reported it.

Was that in Ireland?
We saw one sat on its own inside a van looking very menacing and the owner was nowhere to be seen. The breed needs to be banned over here asap.

You're supposed to have a dog licence in Ireland and for all dogs to be chipped but the number of dogs found wandering and brought to the local rescues with no chip is disgraceful. Often, the dog has escaped from the garden or been let out to do its own walkies (!!) and the owner retrieves them, but they still don’t get them chipped.

It happened. Are u implying it didnt? Cornwall live and the police do not need witnesses the owner ran out and couldnt control his own dog, he admitted fault. The 4 men and women were the witnesses if need be and the elderly lady! Its hurrendous... but not odd. The only strange thing is that they havent yet reported it? And I'm really not sure why? Maybe they will over the next few days.

They can only report what they know about.
....Just a suggestion! Our local paper has an anonymous email in option....

Exactly. And it's not blaming dogs to say the breed is an issue. We humans have bred them into being aggressive, huge fighting machines and so have set these animals up to fail. It's cruel and irresponsible. Of course they then eventually follow their instincts and attack what they see as prey - and they're so strong the outcomes are disastrous.

Oh do piss.

DancingLions · 11/08/2024 09:16

I regularly still see unmuzzled xl bullies out and about. I’m in a big city so no idea who the owners are to report them, I would if I could. 9 times out of 10, they’re straining at the lead and the owner is struggling to hold onto them. And that’s just walking them. If the dog spotted someone or something they wanted to go for, the owner wouldn’t stand a chance trying to stop them.

It makes me really angry. I don’t think anyone should own these dogs but if you’re going to then at least muzzle them in public. Not because it’s the law even, but because it’s the right thing to do. Clearly these owners can’t be trusted to do the right thing, so I’m at the point where I think all xl’s need to be euthanised.

Cockerpooslave · 11/08/2024 09:05

mellowfell · 11/08/2024 00:02

They should be all euthanised. These days I get intrusive thoughts thinking what if one attacked me and my baby whilst walking out and about.

They are not suitable for pets, but it is generally bad owners that allow these things to happen.

Intrusive thoughts are you problem though, maybe get some help for that.

Stupid irresponsible people will always exist. So isn't it time to prevent them from indulging in a particularly dangerous form of irresponsibility by an outright ban?

aurynne · 11/08/2024 08:52

Ilovemyfreedom · 11/08/2024 01:29

To be honest, I really only came on here to see what would happen if I expressed an opinion in opposition to the main argument and the people on here have not disappointed me.
You've all been as aggressive as the dogs we're discussing so does that mean euthanasia all around?
I think a rational head and unemotional logic will get us farther towards a solution to this issue than mass hysteria and bringing out the pitch forks.

Are you relally as obtuse as you make yourself look?

It was another Tory fuck up. There's been deaths and serious disfigurment since the 'ban' but they won't happen were MPs etc live, so it's all good.

Well the SNP didn't want to bring anything in at all until they had to because everyone started shipping their dogs up to Scotland.
