Quiet neighbours now making noise.

My neighbours talked to us about the noise coming from our property. OK, my son has a hobby that does make an annoying noise. Since then we have made sure he's doing it less but we obviously aren't going to stop him completely. They haven't said anything since and I think we've been considerate in reducing the number of hours our son does his thing.

It seems like they've now decided that they are allowed to make more noise. We've been neighbours for years and they've always been quiet. Now we get occasional music or radio in their backyard. When I asked them about it they said they have always worn headphones to be considerate but they don't really like listening that way, so they thought it was fair they got to have their hobbies the way they enjoy them best as well.

Would I be unreasonable to complain to them again? There is a difference between children playing and music when they have the option of headphones.

What's a reverse?

Something people suggest when they have nothing else to say.

Saucery · 10/08/2024 08:10

I really wouldn’t bother trying to bargain an exact basketball time with them. In return for what? They go back to their headphones? I wouldn’t agree to that and neither should your neighbours. They’ve tried not making any noise at all and probably resorted to headphones to block out some of the basketball noise, but now they’ve ceased giving a shit and I don’t blame them.

namechange128468 · 10/08/2024 08:09

There isn’t really a difference is there? Both of your households have hobbies that make a noise. As long as they’re only doing it during the day and it’s not constant (i.e. they give you the same consideration you give them), you haven’t got any basis for making a complaint.

Take your child to the park to play basketball.

^^ This. There’s nothing wrong with having a hobby, but something like basketball should be done in a park not a private garden. Your son’s 13 so he’s old enough to go to a park by himself not spend two hours a day torturing the neighbours.

The fact these nice, quiet neighbours complained shows how disturbing they’re finding it.

of course YABU

I suspect a reverse

Someone will always come and say this on EVERY thread.

And so far I've never seen it to be the case.

Maybe I need to talk to them and ask what they think they can tolerate.

They shouldn't have to 'tolerate' anything

Doingmybest12 · 10/08/2024 08:08

Sorry OP but all they are saying is that if 2 hours of basket ball is reasonable in your eyes, then why have they been so worried about making noise on their side and they will relax a bit about enjoying the radio. What size is your garden, how close are your neighbours, where is the net.

Angelbug · 10/08/2024 08:08

occasional music or radio in their backyard is fine during the day.

A banging ball is really annoying.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 10/08/2024 08:07

Reducing to 3 sessions a day of basketball? Are you joking? The only inconsiderate neighbour here is you @OpalBird

Why can your son. It go to the park? And you do realise there are plenty of other things he could do, it’s not just basketball or screen time

Bellatrixpure · 10/08/2024 08:07

Is he in a basketball team?

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 08:07

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:06

Maybe I need to talk to them and ask what they think they can tolerate.

But you still can’t ask them not to play the radio during the day. That’s perfectly acceptable noise (unless it’s really, really loud).

HospitalitySux · 10/08/2024 08:06

So they're showing you the same level of consideration you're showing them, but you don't like it?

Occasional music is ok! If it was constant then yes ask them to wear headphones, but not with occasional!

Yes would definitely be unreasonable to complain unless it's very late at night/early in the morning or maybe if music with a lot of profanity. I think they were being too considerate before. I don't think it's unreasonable for your son to play basketball outside but it is absolutely awful noise and much worse than music or radio.

Bellatrixpure · 10/08/2024 08:05

You are so unreasonable. Noise is noise. I bet their music is actually something that others enjoy rather than your sons annoying noisy hobby.

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 10/08/2024 08:05

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 07:55

The basketball is only about half an hour at a time, a few times a day. Their music yesterday was for two hours. We've got our son down to no more than three or four times a day now, so it's not excessive. It used to be twice that. So we've done something about it.

So in total, 3.5-4 hours of basketball per day, and they are doing 2 hours of noise?
You really are the tone-deaf (no pun intended) CF neighbour.mi am amzed you have the temerity to complain to them, let alone come on here thinking yanbu!!

Your poir neighbours

RogersOrganismicProcess · 10/08/2024 08:05

Earplugs are your friend if you need silence to concentrate. Or send your teenage off to the park to play and maybe they will reciprocate gratefully. It isn’t like he is a tiny tot.

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 08:05

He's 13 and we think it's better than screen time. I didn't think normal kid playing noise was wrong.

I had an hour of radio during the week when I was trying to work from home last week.

Oh boo hoo. Just shut your window or wear headphones. The fact your neighbours have gone to such lengths shows how annoying the basketball is to them.

It could be argued it's inconsiderate and selfish to not allow a child their hobby. Maybe I'll limit it to three sessions a day but I think any less is not fair to my son.

You can’t ask your neighbours not to listen to the radio because you’re working 😂.

How about YOU wear the headphones!

So you expect people to sit in silence because you are working from home but it’s okay for your son to be bouncing a ball around 2 hours a day? What about the people also working from home? One rule for you and another for everyone else.
