Quiet neighbours now making noise.

My neighbours talked to us about the noise coming from our property. OK, my son has a hobby that does make an annoying noise. Since then we have made sure he's doing it less but we obviously aren't going to stop him completely. They haven't said anything since and I think we've been considerate in reducing the number of hours our son does his thing.

It seems like they've now decided that they are allowed to make more noise. We've been neighbours for years and they've always been quiet. Now we get occasional music or radio in their backyard. When I asked them about it they said they have always worn headphones to be considerate but they don't really like listening that way, so they thought it was fair they got to have their hobbies the way they enjoy them best as well.

Would I be unreasonable to complain to them again? There is a difference between children playing and music when they have the option of headphones.

OP does he play outside? Are you terraced?

I'm trying to understand how the noise from basketball carries so much to make it they annoying to them. I guess it must be the noise of the ball bouncing.

It's great your son has a hobby. I'll go against the grain and say if I were your neighbour, I'd try to ignore the noise unless it was really bad eg unsocial hours and he plays right by their window.

We live in a detached house, and the house next door but one has recently seen a family with teenage boys move in. Now it's loud bouncing balls and Squeaky Voiced Teen every evening. Sound carries.

betterangels · 10/08/2024 08:17

The world does not revolve around children's hobbies, especially ones that are disruptive to others.

More parents should take note of this.

Dreamskies · 10/08/2024 08:16

😂😂

I’d tell you to go fuck yourself! They should listen to their music through HEADPHONES?? In their own home? When they would like to listen to it through a proper device for a mere couple of hours every now and then?

But your son is fine to bang a ball about several times a day?? 😂😖 and that’s a REDUCED amount?

gawd, you’re a nightmare neighbour! I love my music, I have proper sound systems that sound amazing, and sometimes I turn them up loud. I’d never do it an an antisocial time, and it’s not everyday. I’m allowed to enjoy my property and make a small amount of reasonable noise, as are your neighbours.

You sound quite selfish and entitled.

IncompleteSenten · 10/08/2024 08:16

They are allowed to enjoy their garden.
Why do you expect silence from their home yet think noise from yours is acceptable?

BigBoysDontCry · 10/08/2024 08:16

There is somewhere else to put it. In a skip where it belongs.

So your DS is 13 and they think they've got what, 5 more years to enjoy listening to him bouncing a ball for hours every day and you think they are unreasonable? Fucks sake.

Does it not disturb you when you are working at home?

sonofrageandlove · 10/08/2024 08:16

You are being massively unreasonable OP and I’m glad I’m not your neighbour

MoreIcedLattePlease · 10/08/2024 08:16

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 07:55

The basketball is only about half an hour at a time, a few times a day. Their music yesterday was for two hours. We've got our son down to no more than three or four times a day now, so it's not excessive. It used to be twice that. So we've done something about it.

Fuck that. In the words of Reddit, you are the arsehole(s). Multiple hours of bouncing a basketball every day. And you think you’re being reasonable as that’s ’less’ than before.

If I was your neighbour that music would be loud, rock music. For half an hour a time, several times a day. Probably coinciding with when the godawful bouncing ended.

Your poor neighbours.

When they complained they complained about the frequency of it. I think I've been a good neighbour responding to it by getting him to do it less.

@OpalBird ask to borrow their headphones now they’re not using them!

Seriously, you need to move the net. Or your son to a park which has a net!

TemuSpecialBuy · 10/08/2024 08:15

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:12

Two detached homes next to each other. The net is right next to their house but there is nowhere else to put it. They did understand why it was there when I explained.

😅😅😅

This is absolutely a wind up.

A detached house with absoltely NO option at all to put a basketball hoop ANYWHERE else

Dita73 · 10/08/2024 08:15

This has to be a wind up. If not, then team neighbours all the way!

ElaineMBenes · 10/08/2024 08:14

It could be argued it's inconsiderate and selfish to not allow a child their hobby. Maybe I'll limit it to three sessions a day but I think any less is not fair to my son.

He can do his hobby. Just not somewhere that disturbs the neighbours for over 2 hours a day.
My son plays drums- there is absolutely no chance he's playing a full drum kit 3 or 4 times a day. He has an electric one and we have moved it so it's away from any adjoining walls.

The world does not revolve around children's hobbies, especially ones that are disruptive to others.

SulkySeagull · 10/08/2024 07:56

Like fuck would I be listening to music from headphones in my own house! Since when can’t people listen to the radio in their own properties? Give over OP

This. Unless it's blaring or played at unreasonable hours, since when did listening to music in your own house or garden become unreasonable?

Team neighbour

Georgethecat1 · 10/08/2024 08:14

I stand with your neighbours here!

Movinghouseatlast · 10/08/2024 08:14

Why do you think it's reasonable for you to inflict 2 hours a day of basketball on them? And previously you thought 4 hours was OK. Did you not consider them at all?

Now they have chosen not to consider you, which I don't blame them for at all.

I suggest you sit down with them and make a plan and try to maintain a relationship.

I moved house because the child next door played football alone for up to 6 hours a day every day. He was very good so he kicked the ball hard with every kick accompanied by a loud piercing scream. It was hell.

I would genuinely move house (or gauge my ear drums out) if a neighbour was making basketball noise four time a day for half an hour at a time. That is beyond excessive.

Doingmybest12 · 10/08/2024 08:08

Sorry OP but all they are saying is that if 2 hours of basket ball is reasonable in your eyes, then why have they been so worried about making noise on their side and they will relax a bit about enjoying the radio. What size is your garden, how close are your neighbours, where is the net.

God you'd be driving me insane and then you get annoyed at far less intrusive and frequent noise.

DitheringBlidiot · 10/08/2024 08:12

I'm not saying anything here that no one else has said, but a bouncing basketball is such a jarring sound. I'd be on edge never knowing when it was going to start up or stop again.
They were very considerate to you, but you haven't shown them any consideration back, so I don't blame them.

You can't expect silence when you wfh. I wfh and my neighbours don't, when they're in in the day they make noise. If it's the holidays and there's a fair bit of noise from the children etc, I wear headphones. Maybe you could try that?

DaisyChain505 · 10/08/2024 08:11

You sound deluded and entitled. You’re mad about a little inoffensive radio music when your neighbours are listening to a basketball being slammed into the ground for hours on end. Send your precious baby boy off to the park to practice!

Southener · 10/08/2024 08:11

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:01

He's 13 and we think it's better than screen time. I didn't think normal kid playing noise was wrong.

I had an hour of radio during the week when I was trying to work from home last week.

Normal kids playing noise isn't wrong, but it can also be annoying for others. It's just people put up with it because it's life.

An hour of radio playing (or even more) is also fine. The fact you're working from home is irrelevant. Perhaps others near you have to work from home too while listening to repetitive ball bouncing.

You've deemed your noise fine and theirs unacceptable. You are being incredibly unreasonable.

TemuSpecialBuy · 10/08/2024 08:10

This is wild!!!
i cant believe this is a serious post and not a reverse 😅
I think you are getting off likely if all they are doing is opening their back door and playing a bit of music whipe gardening ir relaxing.
your neighbours have been crazy reasonable.
they have stopped showing you any consideration as you are showing little or non to them so they clearly think whats the point?

Our lovely (and imo) "quiet" neighbours regularly play music in the garden and have big parties 3 or 4 times a year. They are just living their lives!

Your poor neighbours are listening to basketball bouncing 3 times plus a day 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

He is 13 not 3 he can go down to the local park and do a couple of hours there.

seriesoffortunateevents · 10/08/2024 08:10

This has highly amused me.

my son makes an annoying noise for two hours a day , used to be more
my neighbours are doing the same thing. Aibu to think it’s ok for us to do it but not them ?

😂😂😂😂
