Quiet neighbours now making noise.

My neighbours talked to us about the noise coming from our property. OK, my son has a hobby that does make an annoying noise. Since then we have made sure he's doing it less but we obviously aren't going to stop him completely. They haven't said anything since and I think we've been considerate in reducing the number of hours our son does his thing.

It seems like they've now decided that they are allowed to make more noise. We've been neighbours for years and they've always been quiet. Now we get occasional music or radio in their backyard. When I asked them about it they said they have always worn headphones to be considerate but they don't really like listening that way, so they thought it was fair they got to have their hobbies the way they enjoy them best as well.

Would I be unreasonable to complain to them again? There is a difference between children playing and music when they have the option of headphones.

OP you aren’t coming across well here 😬

Basketball noise is a complete PITA and if you insist DS needs to do it repeatedly throughout the day then you really need to move it as far away as possible from neighbours. If that means compromising elsewhere then So be it - yes that might mean losing a parking space on your drive or digging up some garden and paving an area but that’s the only kind choice imo.

And playing music at a reasonable level during the day is totally normal and given your attitude your neighbours sound like saints! - I have the radio on most days with doors open on a sunny day as I work from home in my kitchen and my neighbours when home also have the radio on, kids on trampoline squealing, dog barking occasionally - all normal neighbourhood sounds as long as they aren’t excessive or unnecessarily repetitive like basketball

I almost certainly think the basketball noise has not reduced to a level they are comfortable with, so now it's open season.

Occasional music from their garden is not an issue to complain about.

letmeeatinpeace · 10/08/2024 08:22

Could you try one of those 'silent' basketballs?

😅😅😅

This is absolutely a wind up.

A detached house with absoltely NO option at all to put a basketball hoop ANYWHERE else

Our concreted area is on that side. That's why it has to go there.

I see I'm going to have to think about this some more. How long do people think is an acceptable length of time total over the day?

You need to create another place for basket ball, away from their house. If not then this isn't a hobby for the garden.

Quartz2208 · 10/08/2024 08:21

I fail to see why you have such an issue with the music - you don’t think you need to be silent so why should they.

and to be fair you are both allowed to within daytime hours enjoy your space and for them sitting out with music is it

CosmicDaisyChain · 10/08/2024 08:20

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 07:50

Basketball.

So basically BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG with a ball for hours at a time.

yes, you are being unreasonable.

Chatterboxy · 10/08/2024 08:20

It’s just retaliation for your noise!

what’s good for the goose……

NinaPersson · 10/08/2024 08:20

Have you considered that the radio with actual stuff that is listenable to is to drown out the constant thump thump thump of your little prince’s annoying habit, I mean hobby.

If you are that bothered about him having this as a hobby enrol him in a club and get him to practice at the courts, not for hours at a time at home.

mor you could just accept that living in a housing estate there is going to be typical normal sounds from other houses.

is he an only child?

Smithhy · 10/08/2024 08:20

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:01

He's 13 and we think it's better than screen time. I didn't think normal kid playing noise was wrong.

I had an hour of radio during the week when I was trying to work from home last week.

Genuine question - is your DS playing basketball when you are trying to WFH?

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 10/08/2024 08:20

Why don't you talk to the neighbours and see if there are any times which would suit them better? Perhaps they are generally out at specific times and your son could play then? I'd hate having to listen to the constant thumping of a ball, particularly when WFH.

Monkeysatonthewall · 10/08/2024 08:19

I saw OP said houses are detached. My neighbours have a massive and I mean MASSIVE garden. Their children's goal is right next to our garden, now I just have to hope football doesn't get replaced with basketball as they grow 😭🤣

sleekcat · 10/08/2024 08:19

People can play music in the garden. You can’t expect them to wear headphones all the time as music is a shared enjoyment. And people can play basketball in the garden. It’s the duration of either that can be a problem, and the volume of the music.

Whaleandsnail6 · 10/08/2024 08:19

The only thing that is unreasonable is having the basket ball hoop right by their house. I'm sure there is somewhere else you can place it, even if it screwed onto a wall of your detached house.

Other than that, noone is unreasonable...its all just neighbour noise. They have to live with your hoop noise, you live with their radio.

Your poor neighbours if you think 3-4 half hours sessions a day is a compromise. How many hours a day was your son playing before this 'reduction'?

She said it used to be twice that!

Jifmicroliquid · 10/08/2024 08:19

Good on your neighbours. The pounding of a ball multiple times a day is far worse than someone enjoying some music in their garden.

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 10/08/2024 08:19

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:04

It could be argued it's inconsiderate and selfish to not allow a child their hobby. Maybe I'll limit it to three sessions a day but I think any less is not fair to my son.

Eerm, not it couldn't. At least, not using your rationale of 'My child is allowed to make a noise but my neighbours are not'

BeachRide · 10/08/2024 08:18

He used to bounce for 8 x 30mins a day? Fuck that, I'm surprised they didn't pop the bloody thing. If this isn't a reverse, then tough. Well done neighbours for fighting back.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/08/2024 08:18

Basketball sounds are so annoying

Isometimeswonder · 10/08/2024 08:18

Send your kid to the park

A few times a DAY??
Fuck that! I'd be playing my music too!

Yup, me too!
So, OP, you're allowed to make noise, but you want them to be silent?!!

cookiebee · 10/08/2024 08:17

So your neighbours have been living in their home quiet as church mice while you live fully with lots of life and noise. They asked you to be more considerate, but still the thud of your son’s basketball twat twat twats on concrete several times a day. So your neighbours have thought fuck it and are now listening to music out loud and not being considerate, good for them, you didn’t really listen so they are just ignoring you and living life without concern.

Not everyone actually understands what persistant neighbour noise can be like, I don’t mean the occasional switching on of a plug through the wall, a hoover or maybe even a one off loud conversation, I mean constant loud, out of the ordinary noise and a neighbour who won’t reason with you. Basket ball can be done in a sports centre or park, I know what your going to say “but my child has a phobia of parks and all the sports centres and clubs were burned down by aliens waaaa!”, but if your child has a hobby that’s loud and out of the ordinary, then you make allowances for that, you didn’t, you lost!

I had a neighbour growing up who delt drugs from their maisonette and played loud garage music, they were violent and aggressive when approached, that’s a problem neighbour, you can solve your issues, apologise, get your kid in a sports club, if the aliens haven’t ruined them all, and maybe you can go back to what sounds like a nice life, with pretty decent neighbours.

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:06

Maybe I need to talk to them and ask what they think they can tolerate.

There you go!

You are so utterly self unaware. So your son does two hours of basketball spread out over the day… and you have your radio on for an hour… and you’re complaining about their occasional music?

Surely you can see that the noise you are creating exceeds theirs?
