'Sneaking' two extra children into hotel room booked for two adults and two children

AIBU in thinking this may have implications regarding insurance etc?

Friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her DH and four DC aged between 4 and 16. Not a package, no meals included and flights were booked separately.

The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed. It sleeps 4. They've booked it for two adults and two children. That's the maximum number of people allowed.

She wants to check in with DH, their two youngest boys and all their luggage, and have the two oldest boys wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later.

I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications but not sure what these implications might be. Friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid.

AIBU in saying it's not a good idea?

Aw, thank you for questioning that, don't worry,* *cannellonies wasn't referring to my post, I understood. The way the quotes show on here isn't always helpful, she meant the one I was quoting and replying to, but it doesn't show the previous posts unless you click on the "show quote history", so it can be confusing!

Perfectly easy to navigate for anyone with an iq above room temperature.

If anything they are taking up two extra, unpaid for, chairs by the pool. If you can pay for a day pass to the pool, those chairs is loss of income for the hotel.

I assume there is also a limit of people in the pool area, so yes, they are stealing.

If you were the owner of a hotel you’d think differently I’m sure. Because then it would affect you, darling.

But I'm not the owner of the hotel and neither are you lol.

This entire thread is full of the type of people who have never snook into a festival or gone anywhere where they didn't have their hands held.

If you think this is ab enormous crime and hugely immoral you're a fool who's been wrapped in cotton wool and candy floss all their lives.

I feel a kind of pity for you but also can't help but laugh. Enjoy the moral high ground while I enjoy my free hotel room.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 09/08/2024 20:22

they will probably start checking when the ETIAS comes in later this year.

That's been postponed yet again.

It's also not really feasible to check every single traveller in that amount of detail - can you imagine how many miles the tailbacks at Dover would extend to?

French residents have also found there is literally no mechanism for them to get a certificate at their nearest Marie in many cases.

I hope Starmer gets his finger out about smoothing travel between the UK and EU because trying to run the border with your next door neighbour the same way as you do for an entirely unconnected third country is unworkable.

It would never occur to me to consider it largely because I'd go round the bend cramed that close with my whole family.

But I also wouldn't pick a row with someone I claimed was my friend over something this minor that had absolutely fuck all to do with me.

I wouldn't pick a row with them, but I would definitely judge them for being cheapskates (silently), and wonder what else they are being cheapskete about.

It's a room they have paid for a room if they are happy to be squashed it's no big deal. If they were helping themselves to all inclusive food and drink that would be different.

But they will be using towels they haven't paid to wash, in the room and by the pool, water and electricity they haven't paid to use, sunbeds they haven't paid to use that maybe a guest who HAS paid now cannot use and probably other things I can't think of just now. Where is the line before it becomes unacceptable?

DezTheMoaner · 09/08/2024 20:02

Don't try this in France!
How are you going to explain at the border that you only have a booking for four for your six-person family?
They mightn't be applying these rules yet, but they are already clearly set out for holidaymakers and anyone who might be hosting UK family or friends, and they will probably start checking when the ETIAS comes in later this year.

https://france-visas.gouv.fr/en/web/france-visas/your-arrival-in-france

"If you are staying in a hotel, you will need to provide a hotel booking as well as a minimum amount per day of stay that differs depending on the Schengen country visited.
For France, this amount is:

  • 65 euros per day of stay in the case of presentation of a hotel booking;
  • 120 euros per day in the case of non-presentation of a hotel booking;
  • In the case of a partial hotel booking: 65 euros per day for the period covered by the booking and 120 euros per day for the remainder of the stay.
If you are hosted by an individual, you must provide a certificate of staying with a relative validated in the town hall at the request of the person who invited you (note: at the border crossing you must also prove that you have, in addition to this certificate, a minimum amount per day of stay - this minimum amount is €32.50 per day)."

The amount of people who seem OK with this is astonishing. People seriously just don't give a fuck anymore, do they?

ZoeCM · 09/08/2024 19:55

It's not exactly good parenting, is it? If the kids ever get caught stealing and their parents punish them, they'll just be able to say "How is this any different from that time you made us sneak into the hotel?"

AGoingConcern · 09/08/2024 19:53

RampantIvy · 09/08/2024 19:49

Why are you so defensive? Would you sneak two extra children into a hotel for 10 days without paying?

It would never occur to me to consider it largely because I'd go round the bend cramed that close with my whole family.

But I also wouldn't pick a row with someone I claimed was my friend over something this minor that had absolutely fuck all to do with me.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 09/08/2024 19:50

If it’s just a room then it’s not too bad although I would be worried about being caught out and I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable for a whole week, especially not for the two without a bed but it will probably feel pretty cramped.

but if they are also using facilities like a pool/sunloungers etc then it is not appropriate and fair on other people in the hotel.

Just to clarify I'm definitely a she! 😂Can't speak for the person I quoted! 😉

I thought so but I know someone would have commented on it 😂

Given the number of posters who think it is OK to do this, I wonder if hotels will begin to cop on (here and abroad).

If I knew someone who did this I would silently judge them.
If you can't afford more than the number of children a family room would hold don't have them.

Agree.

Cheating is cheating. Slyly getting away with something is what lowlife do.

If they can't accommodate two children without suffering, they need to close their hotels full stop.

But how do they know it would only be one family that did this?

CoffeeGood · 09/08/2024 19:35

Why is CoffeeGood's post ignorant? I admit I'm completely out of the loop on this drought.

Someone on my husbands side of the family did this at the hotel when we got married. It was in the UK and there were no consequences

For a week whilst actively using the hotel facilities like the pool?

Ormally · 09/08/2024 19:25

I can guarantee you everyone is on high alert for British bad behaviour

Yep. News coming out of the UK in the last 2 weeks is not exactly laying smooth ground for tourists aiming to get away with stuff on holiday.

cannellonies · 09/08/2024 19:23

CoffeeGood · 09/08/2024 19:00

I'm not 100% sure and happy to be corrected by someone in the know, in the industry, but I would say the hotel insurance wouldn't cover them as they weren't guests and I don't think their holiday insurance would cover it either as they were in a place they were not allowed to be. Insurance companies find ways not to pay out. I suspect this would be an easy one for them to get out of.

This is what I was thinking too, but I am not certain. If so, it certainly isn’t worth it for a few quid. People need to think for themselves what the actual consequenses might be. Not rely on a GoFundMe or sad faces in the paper. Especially parents who are responsible for the safety of their children.
