'Sneaking' two extra children into hotel room booked for two adults and two children

AIBU in thinking this may have implications regarding insurance etc?

Friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her DH and four DC aged between 4 and 16. Not a package, no meals included and flights were booked separately.

The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed. It sleeps 4. They've booked it for two adults and two children. That's the maximum number of people allowed.

She wants to check in with DH, their two youngest boys and all their luggage, and have the two oldest boys wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later.

I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications but not sure what these implications might be. Friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid.

AIBU in saying it's not a good idea?

@Anotherparkingthread I was actually talking to my dad the other day. He is 80 and sadly only have weeks to live. He started working at the age of 14 and eventually had his own business which went very well and he could retire early. He is a very smart man. He commented on how happy is what that my nearly adult children are such decent and fair people, and he is so proud over them. I told him that it’s because I got it from him, and passed it over to them and I thanked him for giving me such a good upbringing where he taught me the importance of such things. It’s a conversation I will always remember.

That's a lovely collection of stories.

I don't have any kids nor do I want any, so none clogging up any places I might want to stay.

TheaBrandt · 10/08/2024 13:27

People get aggressive when called out when they know they are in the wrong really and feel bad about it

AlbertCamel · 10/08/2024 13:15

Thank you posters for your contributions. 83% so far saying I am not being unreasonable. Much as I thought, though wasn't sure if it was a regular 'thing' to do when booking hotels or not and so that's why I posted.

What I find odd is that some people have said that I shouldn't have made any comments to my friend about it at all, perhaps just responded with, ''Sounds great! Hope you have a good time.'' Surely conversations between friends are a two-way communication of thoughts, opinions. If you have a good, long-standing friendship you should feel able to do this. And our friendship has always been like this, very honest and open, known each other years and years. What I didn't get was why my friend reacted in the way that she did. I think, judging by her actions being quite out of character, she must've had some doubts about what she was doing.

Anyway, all is fine judging by posts and photos and they've been on the beach today. No mention of inflatables.

I’m not clear on how it impacts you?
im sure it will be fine, a bit squishy but probably lots of fun. I put all three of mine in a single bed on holiday when they were little, they slept across the width like little fishies.

So does that mean that I’m allowed to do this too cause if my friend hears and posts about it on here you’ll defend me when you reply and say it has nothing to do with my friend? Good to know i think I’ll do this aswell I clearly have your approval

Msmumm · 09/08/2024 12:19

So you think they would keep rummaging in a smoke filled room on the off chance there was 6 and not just the 4 that were legally registered to be in there>
Can YOU not see why that would be an issue??

How long do you think they would rummage in a smoke filled room looking for someone who have gone out for dinner? Or someone who popped into their friends room for a chat?
That should waste their time nicely.
Luckily that's not how it works

GlassRadiator · 10/08/2024 12:08

I certainly wouldn't trust your friend financially in other ways.

Just don't put yourself in a possition whereby trust and money are concerned.

ballershotcallerr · 10/08/2024 11:18

It's morally wrong but then everyone has a different line. I certainly wouldn't do it myself but nor would I stick my beak in.

KimberleyClark · 10/08/2024 11:14

It’s dishonest.

MarisCapri · 10/08/2024 10:49

Morally and socially just wrong.

Additionally, we will all be paying for these extra snuck in guests. Her teens. (and others)

The hotel will have annual running costs, made greater by the number of unpaid guests that are using the hotel services. (wear and tear, electric, water, pool cleaning, cleaning hours, materials. etc).

Just two extras for this family, but I wonder how that multiplies out for a hotel, over a year.

If just one family a week, sneaks two guests into a hotel, that is about a hundred extra unpaid for guests per year.
If two families do this, it is 200 extra guests etc.

It mounts up, and therefore so will the running costs of the hotel.

Hotel prices, need to cover all running costs, at the very least or they go out of business. Hotels prices will be set to cover at least costs.

Prices charged to us are more.

We are all paying for her ‘freebies’.

And I'm not the owner either, "lol".

However "lolling" aside, no I've never "snook" into a festival or not paid my way because I'm not morally bankrupt. Not sure what "gone anywhere where they didn't have their hands held." means because I have gone many places alone without my hand being held, however, I have always paid my fare because I'm not a CF.

And no, you are quite correct, it's not an enormous crime, however it IS still immoral and wrong, there are consequences to others, even if minor. No wonder the country is going to hell in a hand basket if people like you are teaching their children to sneak around and try to beat the system and that it's something to be proud of. You might think you are cool and superior to all us mugs playing by the rules and enjoying your freebie, but your children might push it that bit further and just do a bit of shoplifting because they aren't hurting anyone and then it's a slippery slope. Where does your moral compass kick in?

And I feel a kind of pity for you because you are not as cool and edgy as you think you are and it's actually you that has been wrapped in cotton wool and candy floss all their lives, because you are so selfish, thoughtless and totally blind to the fact that it's the small things that matter for society to really work and to stop resentment from building.

Well said.

TheaBrandt · 10/08/2024 10:07

Absolutely. I don’t want to be the sneaky cheaty type of person that does this especially not involving my kids in it. They will either end up like that too or judge you for doing so.

This entire thread is full of the type of people who have never snook into a festival or gone anywhere where they didn't have their hands held.

If you think this is ab enormous crime and hugely immoral you're a fool who's been wrapped in cotton wool and candy floss all their lives.

I feel a kind of pity for you but also can't help but laugh. Enjoy the moral high ground while I enjoy my free hotel room.

Yeah we’ll enjoy our two hotel rooms, which we can easily afford to pay for. Two suites last week actually. You enjoy your free hotel room with kids cramped all over the floor. Sorry it’s not for me, you should absolutely do you though.

And I don’t need anyone to hold my hand btw. I moved abroad by myself when I was 19 and traveled by myself or with friends all over the world for many years. Still do. Met my dh on the other side of the world, and guess what..our children don’t need hand holding either. They have also been around the world, dd recently on her own and ds backpacking with a friend. I think it’s you who see the world through your eyes only and that’s a bit sad, but hey, maybe you can work on it.

TheaBrandt · 10/08/2024 08:46

Yes great post coffee.

It’s not a way of “sticking it to the man” things have to be paid for or they can’t survive. A much enjoyed local festival that has been going 10 years has just announced its finished for good. Second festival I go to that’s folded this year. Just not making enough money. People behaving like this friend contribute to this

The amount of people who seem OK with this is astonishing. People seriously just don't give a fuck anymore, do they?

Or to put another way, condone theft. The value of which is probably a lot more than is stolen in one shop theft, or a stolen train ride, or even what insurance would pay for a stolen mobile phone.

Crack on, just don't complain when the prices increase or there's not enough staff to pander to your every whim, because they've been cut back to cover your free hotel room, or when there's less choice as places have closed because you've decided you don't need to pay for something you're using and deserve a free ride.

What a weird and defensive post.

No, I haven't been wrapped in cotton wool and candy floss all my life nor had my hand held since I was small.

You seem to wear your lack of moral compass like a badge of honour.

Yes, I am happy to take the moral high ground because it reflects the decent upbringing I had. Your dishonesty and lack of integrity says more about you than it does about me and many other posters on this thread.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 10/08/2024 05:23

Well personally, squeezing 6 people into a 4 person room for 10 days sounds like hell. She either can’t afford 4 kids or should have waited to save up more for a suitable room.

Also it would be completely out of order for them to take 6 sunbeds, or anything with limited numbers.

Other than that I’d keep out of it. If they want to have a cramped holiday, and be anxious they may be caught or one of their kids drops them in it, that’s their lookout. Doesn’t sound very holiday chilled to me.

Hey you do you. I could give a flying fuck. But trying to make yourself somehow look like the crazy fun one living the dream is kind of laughable. Definitely an embarrassing position to take.

I'm currently thoroughly enjoying my luxury resort accommodation. Fully paid. Not squished up on a lilo 😂

Most modern hotels have key cards so you know if people are in their rooms or not.

That would only be useful if you used your card to leave the room as well as enter, and if there was a turnstile type arrangement on the room door so every occupant beeps in and out.

The card usually controls the electrics as well so you do use your card to leave the room. Although that would only be one person's card if the room has more than one occupant.

Salumthecat · 10/08/2024 01:57

My best friends sister had a hen party where someone said they couldn’t come then changed their mind last minute and just decided to crash in one of the rooms without paying for 5 nights.
My friends sister wasn’t happy but a few of the other girls insisted it would be fine and one of the girls who had paid her way was pressured into sharing a bed with her.
About half the group were against it but were made to feel like they were being over dramatic when they raised concerns about being caught and any concerns were shot down.
The woman freeloading had 3 children and played the sympathy card that she never got a break and they couldn’t afford to go abroad as a family.
The rest were half board and she even snuck in for breakfast, it was a big group so they thought no one would notice.

On the 3rd day she got called to reception as she hadn’t officially checked in and they asked which room she was staying in, when they discovered she had just been sneaking into one of the rooms it wasn’t taken lightly, she wasn’t allowed to even stay at the hotel and book her own room. The other girls offered to club together to book another room but they just said she needed to leave and it was lucky they didn’t call the police or try to charge her for the nights she stayed for free.

They said it was a matter of insurance- in case she got ill, slipped or fell or there was a fire.
The hotel manager said what would have happened if she had a medical emergency?
I’m not sure how they noticed her, there was supposed to be 4 women in 3 rooms (two to each bed) but in one room there were 5. I’m guessing they look out for these sort of things?

I agree with the majority of posters that it’s sneaky and not a good impression to be making for the kids. I’d have been so anxious about getting caught when I was young that I’d have spent the whole holiday terrified. At 16 I think I’d have lost a bit of respect for them.

Never mind the moral side of it though, that is going to be an absolutely miserable holiday!

I can’t imagine any teenagers happy to share a bed in a hot hotel room. No one will have any privacy and they can’t even use separate rooms to relax as they will all be on top of each other.
At that close proximity they will want to kill each other, no one is going to get any sleep and they will be fighting over the bathroom! Can you imagine getting back from the beach and wanting to get showered off and ready to go out for dinner with a queue forming behind you?!

The novelty of sleeping on lilos will soon wear off, there will be no room to even move round and where will they get fresh bedding from unless they have maid service? If they do have maid service are they going to ask for bedding for the make shift air beds?! And the maids will almost certainly notice two extra people in there.

I bet the noise will be horrendous - especially when all the kids start arguing. The other thing that I’ve only noticed one person mention is that room will absolutely STINK!

I feel sorry for the oldest kids, you couldn’t have paid me to go away at 16 and sleep top to toe with a sweaty farting sibling with their stinky feet next to my face in a hot room with no privacy at all and be literally crammed in with the rest of my family. No sleep with people getting up or going to bed at different times, going to the toilet, snoring, moving about on a noisy lilo.

I’m not surprised OP raised her concerns with her friend, I’d be telling my best friend she was bat shit and it sounds like the holiday from hell and a guarantee they will all hate each other for those 10 days.
What happens if they all get the shits?!

I’d like to think I have a good enough friendship that I could say all this, I’d be calling my friend a cheapskate as well! We both value each others honesty.

I would really like an update for this, we probably won’t get the truth as no one is going to admit they had a shit time in this situation unless they get caught and get chucked out. I think the chances of that happening are pretty high though…

SaltAndVinegar2 · 09/08/2024 23:52

CoffeeGood · 09/08/2024 19:00

I'm not 100% sure and happy to be corrected by someone in the know, in the industry, but I would say the hotel insurance wouldn't cover them as they weren't guests and I don't think their holiday insurance would cover it either as they were in a place they were not allowed to be. Insurance companies find ways not to pay out. I suspect this would be an easy one for them to get out of.

Hotel insurance is 3rd party liability and would only pay if the hotel were negligent . In that situation it probably wouldn't make any difference whether the person had paid or not.

Travel insurance is unlikely to ask for evidence of your hotel booking unless the claim relates to the booking itself.

SaltAndVinegar2 · 09/08/2024 23:41

AlbertCamel · 09/08/2024 09:16

We actually fell out about it yesterday, well she was annoyed and said I was trying to ruin her holiday before it had even started. I was just pointing out that there may be fire/ insurance implications and for her to be aware of this.

So Spain will most likely be OK. I don't want them kicked out! However, her boys are pretty loud when they're at home and so it's unlikely they won't draw attention to themselves on holiday and full of energy and excitement.

Why would you care if your friend does this to the extent of falling out with her? It's nothing to do with you. It's highly unlikely the hotel with burn down and if it does they aren't going to leave 2 children in the room but rescue 4 other people, are they. And what insurance implications are you thinking of? Insurance against what and taken out by whom?
