I've probably messed up here with this guy

Talking to a musician who's apparently interested in me and wants to meet up.

We discussed music, I told him I love singing but I'm pretty bad (which is true). I have an ok ish voice but really nothing to be classed as a 'singer' by any means!
I've sang in a hobby group before and that's it.

Told him I used to play keyboard (had lessons as a child and got back into it a few years ago) but that I am incredibly rusty and have forgotten lots (which is true)

He's saying he really wants to hear me sing/play keyboard and that I'm 'musical'. I'm really not!

I don't feel that I've lied, I've expressed that I enjoy these things but I'm not great at them. Don't want to seem like a fraud!

If you haven't even met this fella yet then it's probably too early to worry about whether you've messed up. You might not even hit it off IRL.

Just laugh it off and tell him again that you enjoy it, but are absolutely not comfortable to 'perform' in front of someone, especially when you don't know them.

If he persists then it could be a sign he's likely to be too pushy or a bit of a bore.

Be honest... You learned to play but it's been a while and you're not that good. Or buy time and say you're not comfortable yet. Or it's serious to you and you play for yourself.

Just say maybe one day

Ilovelurchers · 08/08/2024 20:59

It's fine. He's not (I assume) going to demand you perform for him on the first date. If the date goes well and you end up seeing each other, later you can confess that you may have exaggerated slightly out of awkwardness/he got the wrong end of the stick. It will be an amusing story to chuckle over with the grandchildren!

Honestly. Lots of people do stuff like this when they are first getting to know someone. It's endearing really - you were trying to find points in common, because you like him. It's not a massive evil deception.

Good luck!

Either be honest and say you exaggerated a bit and you're not able to perform anything or just say you don't want to perform, tbf if I met someone who said they could play an instrument I'd probably joke that I'd love to hear them play it but I doubt he's going to demand it

Don't be downhearted, get that recorder out of it's cardboard box give it a going over.

Start with Frère Jacques and smoothly step up to Vivaldi's Concerto per Flautino.

You won't look back. It will be a memorable evening for all.

WigglyVonWaggly · 08/08/2024 21:05

Sounds like you explained it perfectly clearly and didn’t overstate anything. If he asks, why not remind him that ‘enjoying’ and being good enough to play professionally in public like him (or wanting to!) are two very different things!

Chickendinner24 · 08/08/2024 21:15

A la Ross from Friends 😂

dhxxx · 08/08/2024 21:18

Don't worry, he's probably just trying to be flirty/have a joke with you. I doubt he will actually hold you to it and I'm sure if anything progresses, it will be on how you click in person and not rest on your musical skills!

Imsotiredandcantsleep · 08/08/2024 21:18

Thank you everyone!
Yeah, I suppose it'd be weird if he were pushy about it. A couple of people have said I have a good voice, but they were probably just being nice.
