If Brighton can protest peacefully so can the

So called ‘protesters’ from the far right?

6 racists turned up to a immigration advice centre in Brighton, 2,000 peaceful counter protesters played instruments, sang, chanted ‘We are many you are few, we are Brighton who are you!’

There was no trouble, just a lot of people making a point.

So if we can do it, without racist language, violence, looting etc why can’t they? They were fine, a ring of normal police ( no riot gear needed) surrounded the bigots then removed them in a van.

YANBU - they are racist right wing thugs. It’s no real protesting.

YABU - they’re legit. And if they want to smash up the place then it’s because they’re provoked by ‘2 tier’ policing.

I'm ducking out of this thread now because I've made my point multiple times.

THIS.

A family member visited Rotherham to visit a friend several times and said it was noticeably impoverished and disadvantaged compared to down 'South'.

Brighton, Bristol, both affluent and ''luvvy'' - markedly different to poor Northern towns where the Industry has closed.

On Wednesday night there were peaceful antiracism protests in many places all over the country including impoverished northern towns. The country as a whole is rising against hatred, not only wealthier middle class people.
This wonderful working class woman from Barnsley is a good example. x.com/JerryHicksUnite/status/1821614674284069191?t=xV3t6bbdqKEAR9MwJfvbvg&s=19

Imagine growing up in a place with easy access to London, beach, happy holiday people, middle-class artists, pastel painted houses.

There are lots of places like that nowhere near London. I suspect that you are a Londoner or someone who wishes they lived in London.

Not everyone wants "easy access to London" (ex Londoner who has no wish to live there again)

So probably worth looking at who in Brighton has the wealth? I bet it is skewed. My guess, and yes I have no facts, is that gay male couples are probably over-represented ( compared to general population) in the wealthy categories.

Again, nobody is saying Brighton doesn't have its problems. Generally, it's an affluent place and it's a good place to live. It's not the same as the small deprived towns in the North.

(I have no idea what you're getting at with your comment about gay couples so I am ignoring that one).

I cried when I saw some of the footage last night. It gave me hope. I live near Brighton and when I heard there were protesters going there, I was very confident that a musical and joyful party was going to be the resistance Brightonians went for, and I was so pleased when that was the case.

I was less pleased to see a video of a man (in another part of the country) shouting ‘NAZI SCUM OFF OUR STREETS’ in someone’s face. Don’t get me wrong, I share and understand his anger, but meeting aggression with aggression is rarely a good strategy. The loudest/strongest person will win 🤷🏼‍♀️

Much better to ‘drive out darkness with light’.

Edited

I saw this footage at the Brighton protest. I agree. I don't like seeing masked men shouting for whatever reason. They were shouting fascist scum. It makes me uneasy. More male aggression.

It also reminded me of the aggressive behaviour of the people shouting at feminists that I've seen. The antifa people seem really aggressive.

Not in any way defending the right wing people. It is indefensible what we've seen lately.

I think everyone already knows rioters aren't reflective of whatever cause they are claiming to support.

But Brighton is one of the richest, most affluent cities and most expensive places to live in the UK - it has a very different demographics and community issues to say, Rotherham.

If you live in Brighton and your experience of UK cultural diversity is wandering down 'The lanes' and buying some fantastic gelato or pho; you're having a very different experience to many others in the UK.

I don't disagree with your OP, but just want to add that Brighton is a particularly lovely place to live compared to most of the shit, left behind cities in the North.

Imagine growing up in a place with easy access to London, beach, happy holiday people, middle-class artists, pastel painted houses.

Then imagine growing up in somewhere constantly ridiculed for being shit, full of 'gammon', 'no brain cells', no jobs, transport, nice buildings and nothing but late night chemists and bookies and all the amazing free cultural sites of London completely out of reach.

I'm not sure what we expected to happen with all the forgotten Northern cities to be honest. But building more NHS centres won't solve it and not will reminding them how dumb they are

It's also full of antisocial behaviour, hard drugs, homelessness, individuals with severe mental health / alcohol/ substance abuse issues, violence & depravation. See also large estates & child poverty, some children there have never even seen the sea. Ex Brighton resident

ErrolTheDragon · 09/08/2024 08:05

Obviously people are using words for ill purposes too - Yaxley-Lennon, musk, Cheshire woman etc...the people rousing the rabble are more culpable than the people they con into rioting.
But again, not the point. Genuine protest doesn't require violence and property damage.

RampantIvy · 09/08/2024 08:00

Frogmarch89 · 08/08/2024 19:27

Peaceful anti racism supporters outnumbered the far right outside an Asylum Centre in Liverpool last night as well and there was no trouble even though hundreds gathered.

Same in Sheffield. There have been a couple of attempts at riots and both times the rioters were vastly outnumbered by peaceful protesters.

Sheffield has a lot of overseas students, so I wonder if this might have influenced the good people of Sheffield.

Mespher · 09/08/2024 07:41

Which is that the counter protesters did so peacefully, they didn't need to throw or set fire to anything. Even in 'left behind' areas, people are capable of using words, not bricks - if there was a coherent protest the 'protesters' would have brought banners not beer.

Yep, as seen by the suspended labour councillor that was arrested, he used his words well.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/08/2024 07:36

Blackpool has leafy suburbs too...
I dare say Brighton is overall less deprived but I'm sure that, like many seaside towns, it's got more than half a dozen 'left behind' white men.

Other towns had a similar response of counter protesters outnumbering 'protesters' to Brighton so nitpicking its demographic details is a bit besides the point.

That doesn't really surprise me. I don't see Brighton as a leafy suburb, more the Blackpool of the south.

Another one who doesn’t have a clue about Brighton! Yes, just like Blackpool reflected in the prices of private housing 🙄

Bullbreedbliss · 08/08/2024 18:30

All these middle class folk who live in leafy suburbs welcoming immigrants, etc. They don’t have to deal with the real life consequences.

You obviously don’t know Brighton as it isn’t really known for ‘leafy suburbs’ the residential area closer to town have pockets of wealth but it is really socially mixed.

I live in Brighton actually, and I work for a charity as well. I do "have a fucking clue" what it is like.

It's one of the wealthiest cities in the UK. It does have deprivation and a lot of issues with homelessness and social inclusion. That doesn't change the fact that overall, it's one of the best places to live in the country, and one of the most affluent.

You may not be aware, but I think it was 200 child refugees went missing from Brighton and Hove mostly girls, believed trafficked. We have our share of asylum seekers, illegal migrants etc

That doesn't really surprise me. I don't see Brighton as a leafy suburb, more the Blackpool of the south.

@Littlepinkstarsbyradish I think anyone who feels Brighton has the same kinds of problems as some of the places in the UK that are at the centre of these issues, needs to go and live in a small town in the North for a while and see how they feel.

I've done both and I can say there is no comparison, despite the fact that Brighton has some clear issues, it is not the same.

Edited

Yes.

I've lived in Brighton for 17 years but am from the North East. My father was from an affluent family and my mother from a poor family, so I saw both sides.

Of course Brighton has areas of deprivation, like anywhere else. But it really isn't the same.

pinacollateral · 08/08/2024 15:14

Very well put.

The reason why Brighton can do this when so many other places cannot is that on the whole, Brighton is an affluent, pleasant place to be, people who live there are educated and privileged and have access to a variety of cultural and enriching experiences.

To put it bluntly, they don't experience a lot of the issue that a lot of other places do - both in terms of the right wing extremism AND mass immigration into communities, which inevitably changes the culture and feel of a place, and can make people feel threatened if people aren't given the support they need to integrate into communities.

To compare Brighton with areas of socioeconomic disadvantage/ deprivation, riddled with issues and segregation - you are not comparing like for like.

Of course Brighton can do this - people there are perfectly set up to be able to have the resilience and emotional resources to respond to things in a healthy way - but also, the issues they are responding to in Brighton are not as bad as they are elsewhere.

Just to put it out there, there are some very different areas of Brighton and it is certainly not ubiquitously wealthy and middle class.
