Feels like there's way too many Men on MN

I probably am being unreasonable however I'm on here primarily for female perspectives.

OP posts:

I hate the way men on here write. Suddenly they're Tim Dowling. They think they're so fucking witty.

Oh god yes. Some women lap it up though and I can never understand why. 🤮

Summerhillsquare · 08/08/2024 04:57

Hard agree, I get lectures from the useless idiots in every other area of my life, I come on here for some common sense!

ThisDog · 08/08/2024 04:56

Some of the men on here are obviously here for attention, they just want to chat to women and come up with a variety of scenarios to make themselves sound great. The mask usually slips pretty quickly. The pervy ones and mansplaining ones need to fuck off as well. Other than that, I don't mind.

How do you know who is a man and who isn't? Most posters don't announce they're a man.

They often bloody do!

Bellsandthistle · 08/08/2024 03:35

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want a discussion space that is for women. I realise mumsnet is for everyone, and you couldn’t realistically block men anyway, but so many posters are simply aghast that OP would prefer to discuss with women only.
Why?

They are tedious. They've got the whole rest of the goddamn internet fully manned up just there for them but still they have to come here. Some of them attempt to go undercover (eg "I am female" 😁😁) but you can always spot them. I don't know what they think they're going to achieve but they're obviously v annoyed at the thought of groups of women gathering and communicating with each other without any men around to correct them.

Wall of text. Slipping of the mask. Lots of explaining. Thinking they know better.

I agree that there are some great male posters, but they are massively outnumbered by the amazing, intelligent, kind and awesome women. And that doesn't happen elsewhere so it's something to be treasured.

If my pretty unevolved DH asks 'what MN thinks' about topics, can't we as women value the unique group of talent here? Groups change when there are a lot of men.

Edingril · 08/08/2024 03:22

For women who hate men so much they seem to put a lot of effort into wanting one or 'keeping' them

Whenwillitgetwarm · 08/08/2024 02:38

I agree. Whilst there’s always been robust debate on here, there’s been an uptick in aggression and it doesn’t present in a way that seems authentically female. It’s interesting because when I used to compare here to Reddit, over there felt more aggressive, but I think that’s changed.

I’m also pretty sure some of the earlier replies are from those who are ‘digitally female’ too.

Of course there’s no way to ban men and I wouldn’t want to, but I’d prefer if this little corner of the net remain vast majority female. We don’t have many dedicated spaces to speak on issues that matter to us whilst receiving feedback from others who will understand the nuances from a female perspective.

I do agree that the site name should be updated to Womensnet though.

SD1978 · 08/08/2024 02:28

I only ever know it a man posting/ replying because they say- I'm a man and......or the post is so long and woe is me, it's not my fault filled you work that out in 3 seconds......

SoupDragon · 08/08/2024 02:21

It still is primarily female.

It simply has never, ever been entirely female.

This is really tedious.

There's plenty of childfree posters on here too.

Despite the site being "by parents for parents", you don't need to be one to contribute to most threads.

Perhaps Mumsnet should undergo a rebranding similar to Twitter/x.

Any suggestions?

Peoplesnet obviously 🤣

IME men are very interested in what women think. I have so many IRL discussions where a man sits with a group of women and wants to know what they think about various issues that impact their lives. Male friends read this forum to get a real-life female perspective, too.

I really don't support segregation based on gender or parental status at all, this is how we end up in situations where women and men have completely different perspectives and no idea what the other sex thinks or what their concerns are.

I don’t disagree, I’m just saying that for example my DH would rather put hot pokers in his eyes than comment and chat online. He says men don’t chat as much as women and that’s reason enough he’d hate it 😂

SnowFrogJelly · 08/08/2024 00:35

How can you tell

urbanbuddha · 08/08/2024 00:30

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 08/08/2024 00:25

How do you know they're men - have you checked their passports? 🤔

It’s often obvious that a man is pontificating on here. It’s the mansplaining in their message.

ElleintheWoods · 08/08/2024 00:28

BingoBangow · 07/08/2024 23:55

I always assume I’m replying to a woman or reading something from a woman’s perspective, mainly because I can’t imagine the men I know IRL would have any interest on chatting and discussing on a site that is mostly used by women.

Shock horror there is women on here without children or caring for children not their own too

ElleintheWoods · 08/08/2024 00:22

What's wrong with being inclusive and just accepting everyone who wants to contribute?

Frankly there is no other British discussion forum with this level of activity and many popular threads have nothing to do with being a woman/mum. Eg the parking ones, the current riots ones, etc.

If you are asking for recipes, have ingrowing toenails, need advice about estate agents, your cat has gone into labour in your airing cupboard, you have just been made redundant, your relative has died, your dog has eaten chocolate, you need to know a good hotel near the airport in Madrid or you baby just won't sleep, why on Earth would it matter?

Because that’s what all women talk about all the time.

Polyp0 · 08/08/2024 00:03

I agree

quockerwodger · 08/08/2024 00:00

Moonshine5 · 07/08/2024 23:47

Yet they called it Mumsnet......

It's irrelevant if a man founded it.

However I do accept that it's a small minority that agree (based on my "thanks").

They did call it Mumsnet.

I'm not sure why tbh.
As I recall, it was just the catchiest name that they came up with. The original idea was to share information about holidays and coping with kids whilst away etc.

SouthLondonMum22 · 07/08/2024 23:58

You are getting primarily female perspectives.
