Feels like there's way too many Men on MN

I probably am being unreasonable however I'm on here primarily for female perspectives.

@Violay "Men are just as deserving of support and insight as women"

Of course. Nothing to stop them setting up their own forum!

They don't need to, they can join this oneGrin

brunettemic · 09/08/2024 16:11

Meh, I don’t really care. Might give a more rounded view and given how utterly batshit some of the female perspectives on here are that’s not a bad thing.

YABU. Women and men need to be talking and understanding each other more not less. What if I wanted a 'parental' perspective? There are probably as many posters on here without children as with them; I don't agree that it is mainly a 'mums' forum and if you dare query why child free posters are here I can guarantee you will be ripped to shreds. Men are just as deserving of support and insight as women.

In my experience, women spend large amounts of time listening to men talk as it is, and many of us feel we do not lack understanding of the things they wish to say. Quite honestly, the chance would be a fine thing. I find it very refreshing to know that the majority of people 'speaking' will be women for a change. If men want to join in I don't have a problem with that, but I don't need 'Man here!' to give me any unique and special understanding of a topic from his perspective of being one individual man. What he has to say is if no greater importance than the women commenting.

DonnaHadDee · 09/08/2024 15:29

Very much the same here OP, I'm typically more interested in female perspectives, but of course anyone can and does join up. It would be a useful filter!

As a software developer, it's very easy to run some analysis tools and estimate the gender of the poster if they have any significant posting history. These tools are very accurate. I've used that to review some posts from time to time.

Let me tell you there are some well known mansplainers, especially in the politics and middle east area. I won't name them here, but a few of us have a virtual chuckle about them in PM. It is rather amusing :)

There are too many men, and presumably women also, on MN with pro men agendas. I have no problem with men on here in principle but get very irritated with the frequency of repetition of the same old whining about 'double standards' 'if a man said that' and so on.
For one thing, moaning about the advice women give is their only contribution, almost never anything as an alternative to help the OP, so its fairly clear they're haunting the threads for the express purpose of 'calling out' the percieved sexism.
For another, I really couldn't care less if there is a pro women bias on MN. In fact, given the pro male bias pretty much everywhere else, I consider it a strength of the site. And it's not like there's no other options for those who disagree.
So men, great. Men's 'rights', no thank you.

I've noticed it lately too and tbh what is being posted by men lately is self serving garbage. The replies aren't exactly supportive and I don't support what they are saying either. It's all sex and relationship stuff. This is predominantly a mums forum (hence the name) mums are not going to side with you telling us you think you married the wrong person because she won't have sex with you 3000 times a week..jog on.

You say that "what is being posted by men lately is self serving garbage". That seems a bit of a sweeping generalisation. How do you know which posts are by men, unless they make it obvious by either saying so or playing up to negative male stereotypes?

Could it be that you've recently noticed some posts that were self serving garbage that were by men. But it's also possible that a fair few reasonable and/or helpful posts you read were also written by men, but these men weren't making an issue of their being men, didn't feel the need to announce it, and you didn't even wonder whether they were women or men because, you know, they were just people contributing to a discussion in a reasonable way?

@Moonshine5 I agree. I'd love this to be a woman only site. But obviously I have to accept that it isn't.

HowardTJMoon · 09/08/2024 07:59

@Waterboatlass do you have any suggestions?

Bellsandthistle · 09/08/2024 07:25

This is total garbage.

Some women would like to ban men from MN. They have said so. There do appear to be a lot of man haters. Look at the thread title FFS. No man has said they have any problem with a women only space. Many people have simply said MN is not for women only under its own rules which is just a fact.

I’ve read the thread. I disagree with your assessment. 👍

Waterboatlass · 09/08/2024 06:38

I'm more than happy for men to be here (I'm not a mum). However, gents, when you are posting and see the need to point out your sex on certain topics, please can you think of some new ways to do this. 'man here', and 'from the male perspective' and the like are getting a bit irritating!

bragpuss · 09/08/2024 06:31

Bellsandthistle · 09/08/2024 06:09

Well, we could start a “women only” website, but we’d only be accused of being “man-haters” 🤪 and would be immediately infiltrated by men, anyway.

Nobody is trying to ban men from mumsnet, but the pure frothing at the very idea women be allowed a space to discuss amongst ourselves is…revealing.

Mumsnet HQ makes it clear that the site is for all parents and they have strict rules about posts which are sexist and try to 'chase away' men.
Why not look up the Mumsnet settings page with info on talk guidelines. It will help make the aims of this site clear.

That's a bit weird. There are loads of people who are not parents on here

You've got a thread goading women into slagging off men (unsuccessfully thank goodness). Another about a female friend being a "catfish". Another about your wife being jealous of you driving around a female colleague. And the seemingly obligatory sex thread. That's not even getting into your posts on other threads...
You are the embodiment of the problematic men we're talking about.

I'm very wary of that poster. So many red flags in his posting history. It's been noted by other mumsnetters too.

BeachParty · 08/08/2024 18:29

This AIBU pops up every now and again, and yes YABU.
It's for parents, not just mums, always has been.
@MNHQ always make it very clear that they're welcome here.

I agree. Whilst there’s always been robust debate on here, there’s been an uptick in aggression and it doesn’t present in a way that seems authentically female. It’s interesting because when I used to compare here to Reddit, over there felt more aggressive, but I think that’s changed.

I’m also pretty sure some of the earlier replies are from those who are ‘digitally female’ too.

Of course there’s no way to ban men and I wouldn’t want to, but I’d prefer if this little corner of the net remain vast majority female. We don’t have many dedicated spaces to speak on issues that matter to us whilst receiving feedback from others who will understand the nuances from a female perspective.

I do agree that the site name should be updated to Womensnet though.

Gender essentialist nonsense. Women who don't experience themselves emolliently enough for you aren't authentically female?

Please. What 🗑, and sexist 🗑 at that.

Female all my life, thanks. Just very low tolerance for BS.

Read the Thread title and maybe a bit of the thread - nothing about banning men !!

Eh?

Huh, You compared a man inventing a bra to a man being involved in inventing this forum for parents......A bra is specifically designed for women. Mumsnet was designed for PARENTS, not just for women. Your analogy is ridiculous.

The people who developed Mumsnet did so for parents to discuss parenting. It was never developed just for women. People like you see the name and assume its just for women when they have explained previously it was the catchiest name they could think of calling it.

Mumsnet is for parents so your view on how many men are on here is irrelevant. Its a parenting forum.

Don't comment if you think my thread and opinions are irrelevant. You're the one that can't keep away lols

The only sexist remark I can see is your “only sexual reference in the thread is by a man”.

Would you have called this out if a woman had posted it?

Lol he even apologised for making the comment but you carry on being an apologist 😂

You can often tell it’s a man typing who might be problematic by the style of writing. There’s a certain way of being that screams “I consider myself the most important man in the room and need to take up space” that even comes across in the written words. I avoid those threads altogether.

Otherwise, for the majority of posters, who whether male or female are answering posts sincerely, I don’t think it matters. The decent self aware mean will avoid the threads that they have no place on, and join in where they can be a valuable part of the conversation.
