To be annoyed that my parents didn’t fully vaccinate me?

I know this sounds daft but I’ve been going through my medical records and it shows childhood vaccinations. According to these records there is quite a few where I received the first dose and was never taken for my booster jabs and I was never taken for my meningitis jab either. Aibu to be annoyed

Yeah I think YABU. I found out when I was undergoing fertility treatment that a few of my childhood vaccinations weren’t done. My 5year old brother was undergoing cancer treatment at the time, I guess they were a bit preoccupied!! Maybe your parents had other things going on at the time and forget, really not the crime of a century. Get some boosters booked and forget about it.

MrsWhistleD0wn · 07/08/2024 10:59

YANBU my parents did the same. things like the first MMR but not the second, missing meningitis & diphtheria jabs. Went to a lot of 3rd world countries as well so amazing I didn't catch anything

Lemonade2011 · 07/08/2024 10:58

Which ones didn’t you get? The schedule today is very different from what I got in the 80’s/90’s so if you’re comparing it it’s likely things weren’t available then but I would be annoyed if I hadn’t been fully vaccinated. Parents have their reasons I find, I didn’t have one for medical reasons can’t remember why now though, have you asked them why or did they just not bother to take you?.

You can try to catch up now if possible, speak to your practise nurse/gp about which vaccines you’ve missed and how you can catch up/what they recommend.

Differentstarts · 07/08/2024 10:57

I'm the same but I'm not sure how accurate the records are as apparently I had one 30 years before I was born. I got some as an adult to cover missed ones I think it was mmr and something else. Just speak to your dr, you can have them now

Everydayimhuffling · 07/08/2024 10:56

I'm missing loads from my records (predigitisation), but I've had them all. I would try asking your parents if you can, unless you have reason to think they wouldn't have bothered with them all.

Chocolateorange22 · 07/08/2024 10:50

I am a late 80's baby and only got one dose of MMR. I'm in an area that has had a spike of measles cases recently. I spoke to my GP as I live with someone with a weakened immune system. They booked me in for a booster, all sorted easily. They thanked me for checking my online records because it didn't flag on their system as missing.

If it was me and I wasn't severely ill since due to missing them then I couldn't be bothered about it

This. And I fully vaccinated all mine

KaitlynFairchild · 07/08/2024 10:40

Not being unreasonable at all. Your parents seriously failed in this regard and you have every right to be annoyed with them. Sadly their mistake is now likely to be expensive for you to fix, but essential for your health.

Edingril · 07/08/2024 10:24

So you are an adult who can now think and act for yourself?

In fairness it is not that simple, you can't go back and get them at the correct stage, and getting them done at all as an adult can be problematic. Or expensive.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/08/2024 10:37

I wouldn't rely on the records. My son's red book suggests he never had half his vaccinations, and the GP surgery shows him missing one which I know he had, so I can refer them to the appointment date, which shows he had it, but it wasn't recorded properly.

And that was 8 years ago - who knows what any of us had back when we were kids.

LennyBalls · 07/08/2024 10:33

You can still have most of them.
HPV you can have up until you are 25 as a woman and the other vaccines can be given at any age.
GP should be able to administer.

SpanielintheWorks · 07/08/2024 10:28

The meningitis one wasn't introduced till 2015 or so. How old were you then? If late teens, maybe you needed to be the one to book it.

Msmumm · 07/08/2024 10:27

This happened to a fellow vet friend of my daughter. When they started vet school they had to provide documentation that they were fully vaccinated. Her friend had had none at all as her parents were anti vaxers. She had to have them all before she could start her studies. Some parents are just idiots.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/08/2024 10:26

YANBU.

It’s not unreasonable to have expected your parents to have protected you as much as they could. It’s upsetting to find that they didn’t bother.

I recently had an illness that I wasn’t vaccinated against as a child and the lack of vaccination only came to light when I asked the doctors about my vaccination history. I’m still quite cheesed off about it, TBH.

WrylyAmused · 07/08/2024 10:22

Some doctors didn't keep great records - I know I had all mine but I had to have them redone a few years ago as the info has never made it onto digitised records.

No worries, just get yourself booked in for boosters for everything now. I found them to be very happy to help.

Thanks everyone. I was born late 90s. Seems I had some first ones but not any follow ups

My DD's electronic record doesn't have all her vaccinations listed. The doctor surgery just never submitted them. I wanted to know where she was at with her tetanus shots and it's showing them as never received. I know she has received a full course, however.

I forgot the red book a few times when they were older, but my DC have had everything.

Maybe it’s just not documented, as PP have said.

Galoop · 07/08/2024 04:55

I would, it's basic parenting but I'd not waste enough energy on it who knows what was going on at the time for your parents or if they were even fully aware of it. If they were overall great parents then it's probably an oversight

Lovingsummers · 07/08/2024 04:12

You may have received them and it's not documented. Or you may not have for whatever reason. Even if your parents chose to not give all vaccines, if you disagree, you can go catch them up.

Lengokengo · 07/08/2024 04:03

In didn’t have many of my vaccinations either. This was due to my parents moving house a lot but mostly a general attitude of my parents that if they did something for my older siblings, then that sort of covered me ( youngest). So if they gave my sister 1k, then they were ‘ generous to their children’.

i have a lifelong condition as a result of not being vaccinated and then getting the disease.

i also have a lifelong resentment towards my parents that they interpret as me being ‘difficult’. While my older siblings ( that got the vaccinations, money, interest and support) are curiously much less ‘difficult’.

Unfortunately I got rubbish parents, but there is no vaccination for that.

MariaDingbat · 07/08/2024 03:49

I also realised as an adult that I had missed lots of childhood vaccines. Not through any antivax ideals, more through neglect and misinformation from my doctor. I got a load of vaccinations at 18 and I was 35 when I got an MMR as I realised I didn't have immunity. I was angry my parents had left me vulnerable for no reason.

I caught so many illnesses when I was younger, I now have an auto immune disease that made me really susceptible to infections when untreated.

Yourdemonsyourproblem · 07/08/2024 03:37

Get over it
