To find this apology an absolute cheek

Yesterday I heard my two friends making fun of my weight behind my back in a restaurant whilst I went to the toilet. I confronted them and they just said it was banter and I need to take a joke. I said I wasn’t happy and then there was an atmosphere until we went home shortly after. Then today I received this text.

So she’s blaming me for being sensitive and telling me to move on! What a cheek! A complete non apology and I’m even more fuming!

What did you hear them say?

Coconutter24 · 06/08/2024 16:05

You banter with each other you don’t banter with someone who you think is not there, that’s just slagging off or taking the piss out of them which is unkind!
That apology isn’t even an apology

Jennyjen92 · 06/08/2024 16:02

Hi I once went on a girls night out, went the toilet to find a very close friend and her friend in the toilet taking the mick out of me my makeup my dress everything and even said I stink needless to say I walked out they all had me minding thier bags I left all their bags and walked out and I never spoke to her again ever I cut her off completely cut them off !

CautionaryTaleGirl · 06/08/2024 16:02

'Sorry you're offended' is NOT an apology.

She's not sorry at all and is blaming you.

Ohnoshebetterdont · 06/08/2024 16:01

That’s actually shocking. It’s not a matter of you being sensitive, it’s a matter of them being dicks!

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 06/08/2024 16:00

It was only a joke is said by every bully everywhere

spikeandbuffy · 06/08/2024 15:59

Rather have no friends than ones like those

She does sound genuinely sorry. I'd be inclined to let it go once.

I think you must have read a different apology to everyone else on this thread.
It was a complete non-apology, with a bit of added victim blaming thrown in.

If you really feel that the bitchy "friend" is genuinely sorry, that's probably because you're a very nice person yourself and wouldn't treat your own friends so badly.
Just be careful that others don't take advantage of your trusting nature.

Banter is with the subject of it appreciating the joke and joining in. Bitching behind someone's back isn't banter. Maybe point that out to them. If you want to continue as friends they should both apologise - properly, not that non-apology that blames you for being too sensitive.

But they don't sound very nice.

Bithcing behind someone’s back is bitching behind their back. OP told them she was unhappy and they were dicks about it.

Theres no nuance here, her ‘friends’ are not decent people.

Ditch them OP you’re better off without them.

Freespeechisvital · 06/08/2024 15:56

Blaming you for your reaction to their abuse is Narc behaviour
Block do not reply

CJFJ1 · 06/08/2024 15:56

"It was only banter" is the excuse that children use when they're made to explain any rude / nasty comments that they may have made to others, which actually constitutes bullying.

You are better off without these "friends", OP.

Tbry24 · 06/08/2024 15:55

What disgusting ‘friends’….you are better off without them in your life.

I come from a toxic family environment and I am currently low or no contact. This is the sort of thing I had said to me thousands of times as I’m too ‘sensitive’…..could be about any of a hundred topics but always blaming me and never actually apologising. So I know how hurtful it is x

Monkeysatonthewall · 06/08/2024 15:54

Such a back handed 'apology'. You deserve better friends OP.

Bluebonnet100 · 06/08/2024 15:51

Banter is when the subject of said banter is there and can fully participate. Being insulting is saying something behind your back assuming you can’t hear the rude comment.

If they truly were good friends and knew you were somewhat sensitive about your weight, why would they do that.

Drop them like a hot potato. You can do better.

Goldcushions2 · 06/08/2024 15:49

How ugly and nasty that non apology is.

Be glad you now know exactly who they are.

CheshireCat1 · 06/08/2024 15:49

A joke and banter is laughing with someone not about someone.

harriethoyle · 06/08/2024 15:47

"banter" is almost inevitably used when someone has been caught being unpleasant. It's basically code for bullying and meanness.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/08/2024 15:45

Ugh.

I'd reply:

'That isn't an apology.

Knowing that what you were saying was nasty and guaranteed to hurt, you shouldn't have said it, friends don't say nasty things about friends.

However you are right, it is time to move on and leave this 'friendship' in the past, I really don't need 'friends' like you two!'

Georgethecat1 · 06/08/2024 15:45

Who need enemies when you have friends like this?

LovelyJumper · 06/08/2024 15:44

Reply I'd send:

"Banter is a joke between friends, not a joke at the expense of a friend you didn't know could hear. I'm as 'sensitive' about this as you are about INSERT THING YOUR FRIEND FEELS MOST SHIT ABOUT HERE but I would never have joked about that because I don't want to hurt you. Happy to leave it until you apologise like a grown up and stop trying to make me feel it's my fault. If that's never, I guess we aren't friends."

Just say
You shouldn't be sorry that I'm offended, you should be sorry for making nasty remarks about the appearance of someone who is supposed to be your friend. This is not about my sensitivity, it's about your bitchiness. And it's not banter as you didn't say it to my face. There's no moving on until you apologise properly and sincerely for being rude and bitchy about me behind my back. Laughing at someone's appearance is not a joke.

WigglyVonWaggly · 06/08/2024 15:43

My reply would be: “You’ve confused ‘banter’ with nastiness. This has nothing to do with anyone else’s sensitivity or inability to appreciate a joke and everything to do with you both being unpleasant enough to bitch behind the back of your friend. I’m not interested in seeing either of you again, so yes - I certainly do choose to leave it at that.”

DeathbyDying · 06/08/2024 15:41

the best response to that kind of thing is to say
that it sounded like an insult. just saying 'it's a joke' doesn't make something insulting funny. explain to me how it was funny.

this is the type of line abusive men engage in.
'you look like a pig in a dress. I was just teasing. can't you take a joke. you are so sensitive'.

NO its not funny. It's insulting.
