It's an out door pool that isn't that busy in September. I guess it's a way to bring in a bit of money after the main season has passed before it shuts for the winter.

Have you ever watched a dog decide where to shit? They aint gonna be doing it in a pool 😂

I don't know... my own dog has had a shit in the sea.. but the water was only up to her ankles.

People are happy to be in the same body of water with babies in swim nappies, and older kids (and probably adults) who just pee in the pool. Swimming and putting their face in the water. People swim and put their face in the water in rivers and the sea, which are not filtered and consisting of chemicals.
It looks like people are just sitting/standing in the water with their dogs during these sessions.

*Are you familiar with a RAM?
The risks I am particularly concerned about would fall under the high severity, low probability category.

The usual approach by lidos has been to accept the risk and transfer it to the dog owners by making them responsible by accepting liability in lieu of the lido.
It is a roll of the dice each time. Eventually the luck will run out.

There will be an owner with a dangerously out of control dog or a serious illness will affect more than a handful of owners causing an investigation.

It’s also not a recommended measure to transfer risk for that category of risk to the public to mitigate. Especially when dog owners aren’t known for being more responsible than average.

Doesn’t make it ethical to knowingly put dog owners at risk so you can get your hands on their money. Charities should be ethical.*

I presume you're writing to your MP about all these Lidos.

MoggyP · 06/08/2024 12:27

I’ve now refreshed the page and seen that the amazingly high £250k is over 6 years. So averaged out, that’s £41k a year (probably less when the event was new, more now)

8 bookable dates - around £5k a day; 5 sessions a day £1k per session

Much more plausible!

Are there enough local kayaking clubs and lifeguard training organisations to buy the same number of sessions? I’m not local, so have no idea what the demand would be

spikeandbuffy · 06/08/2024 12:20

Not an issue is it given it's drained and cleaned
But then I swim in a reservoir and a river, often with dogs there so... Grin

MoggyP · 06/08/2024 12:17

I have not said that the lido could make £250k from kayak lessons- that is bullshit twisting of my actual suggestion

If they really do make £250k from these 8 days, then yes, that is what they would need to be looking at from other activities in order to do right by the Lido’s overall finances.

Is it really that much that they make? If so, I can see why they stick with it!

perfectstorm · 06/08/2024 12:10

Though I would love it more if someone located a parking concern. Or queues? But mostly parking.

perfectstorm · 06/08/2024 12:08

I love this thread. There are properly bonkers posts on it, no grips to be had anywhere, it's about a minor civic matter so not in any way depressing or scary... just painfully, beautifully English. This whole thread could be a sitcom argument. Dad's Army for the 21st century.

Mumsnet, I love you so. You have put a spring in my step today.

Anyone succumbed to the High Risks yet?

I think Chippy Lido has a dog session at the end of the season before the pool is drained and cleaned. Can't see a massive issue with that. But to have dogs in there shedding massive amounts of fur, drooling everywhere with unclean feet, unclean bums and then open as usual with no cleaning the next day 🤢🤢🤢 Truly disgusting. I'm a dog lover and lifelong owner but that's gross.

I know! Saltdean Lido also invites all the local cows in each lunchtime, and then people go and swim in there after!!!!!

YeOldeGreyhound · 06/08/2024 12:03

What a great idea. My dog is not a swimmer (greyhound), but plenty of dogs are and love stuff like this.

I see OP is just trying to rile people up though. It is not like random dogs will be jumping in whist your kids are in there. It is a bookable event and takes place before the pool is drained and cleaned.

All this anger over nothing.

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 06/08/2024 11:28

No. Dogs are not 'people'.
Same as dogs are not children and don't need to be compared to them in every thread that isn't pro dog.

(Haven't read the full thread so no idea if someone has made the old faithful "I'd rather share with dogs than kids!" comment, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have!).

I think that all sentient beings have personhood, and that personhood isn't limited to homo sapiens. Dogs have feelings and personalities, and they can feel ill and get hurt. And they grieve. Dogs are definitely people. You just think they don't have personhood bc they can't talk. But language is the only thing missing.

Plus, we are actually animals too.

The dogs look really happy at the dog swim and look as if they're enjoying themselves, just like human people do.

That is what Saltdean is doing. It is not open the next day. It is a few weekend sessions before the pool is drained and cleaned..

OP has riled everyone up with misinformation

Article is from October 2022. Seems their concerns didn’t amount to anything.

NoisyDenimShaker · 06/08/2024 11:54

llamajohn · 06/08/2024 11:50

People are in there as well as dogs.

One lido round her does it for the last ever session, dogs only, then it drained for the winter.

Only the dog's owners are allowed, and that's only if they want to. They can get a spectator ticket and throw balls to their dog from the side.

This lido DOES do it at the end of the season, and then it IS drained and cleaned.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 06/08/2024 11:54

@llamajohn One lido round her does it for the last ever session, dogs only, then it drained for the winter.

But...this is what Saltdean does? It just allows owners in with their dogs... these are the 'people' you are referring to and why they need to buy a ticket

K0OLA1D · 06/08/2024 11:52

Do write to the council. So many flagrant breaches.

I am not alone in my concerns.

50 dogs running off the lead around a lido in an enclosed space - nothing low risk about it. It’s a money grab that is intended to go for as long as they are lucky.

Wait till you find out about Crufts.
