In what sense?

Their obsession with bringing their dogs everywhere with them, and especially wanting to swim with them. They rely on you for food, they’re not your friend.

I would love this and my golden retriever would love it too. Sadly we are a fair way from Brighton and she doesn't travel well.

Could she swim there? ;)

It is rank and I say that as dog owner. One of my dogs would sh*t as soon as it got in the water and I have no doubt many pee

I do agree that it's gross, but I suspect that people with dogs who aren't good in water won't be taking their dogs to a lido, and no humans who think it's gross will be taking part, so I don't see the issue?

Apologies @Mercurial123 . You weren't speaking to me .

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 14:58

Posters who just make up random comments without checking are a bit thick. That's worse than embarrassing.

@Mercurial123

It wasn't a random comment. It was part of a discussion. But you'd have to read the thread to see that.

Kids pee in swimming pools all the time. And there are babies in swim nappies... maybe the solids are kept out but the water still goes through them, and out again.
Enjoy your backstroke.

@YeOldeGreyhound

Genuinely curious not to dismiss what @sunglassesonthetable was talking about. It might be true what you're saying; I know that it's only food preparation areas that have official restrictions on dogs, so it's up to the preference of the cafe/shop etc whether they allow dogs in. Lots of people think that's a 'breach' of something, and it is: it's a breach of their own personal boundaries, and they need to understand that their boundaries aren't the same as everyone else's.

Not sure if this one's the same, but interested to hear the specifics and am open to being corrected by an expert in the field, if the PP is one.

MN is full of threads about how it is vile that dogs are allowed in cafes... they cite hygiene issues, yet those same dog friendly cafes have 5* ratings.

Your are right... it is up to the people who runs such establishments as to whether to allow dogs or not.. and in some place (such as Lake District), the canine £ goes far.

Mercurial123 · 06/08/2024 14:54

My comment should be to @greenbananasoup

@Watchkeys Lol I was responding to a poster saying this was a High Risk event. Dogs off lead etc. Just everyday sarcasm.

What breaches? Genuinely curious. It's a private event that you can't attend without a ticket, so, not a 'public' swimming session. I'm not sure what the rules are. Are you?

Ignore them. Probably coming from the same place as the so called "hygiene breaches" for allowing dogs in cafes.

Watchkeys · 06/08/2024 14:41

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 11:43

Do write to the council. So many flagrant breaches.

veritasverity · 06/08/2024 14:41

Not my idea of fun, but I used to swim in the river with my dog, and it was lovely, difference was I'd swim with Ddog on the down stream side of me!

It’s quite interesting that they drain and refill it so often. Many pools are drained much less frequently.

It sounds like once per year?
Not unreasonable at all.

My mum used to work in a leisure centre, and she took photos of a pool that had been emptied. Was very unsettling.

More blind hysteria than bit misleading but thanks @WiddlinDiddlin

Love a bit of plain common sense.

Mixing dogs and humans together while sharing pool water is a recipe for disaster

  • mortality rate of 30% for humans- Capnocytophaga canimorsus - normal in dog saliva.
  • parasites like toxocara canis- do you want worms literally wriggling their way through your flesh? To your eyes? Causing permanent blindness? And if pregnant losing your baby?

Bit misleading though...

The infection rate of C. canimorsus is between 0.5 and 0.67 cases per million ...

Toxaocara canis - those worms need to hatch from eggs that have sat at a constant temperature and humidity for several days. Thats hard to achieve even when the eggs are sitting in a turd on the ground... it isn't going to happen in a Lido. You would typically need to consume (yes, consume) quite a quantity of larva laden poo to get an infection and whilst it is in theory possible to pick it up from the saliva of a dog who has VERY recently eaten some old, larvae laden poo... it is vanishingly unlikely.

The reality is, the actual risks of picking something nasty up from a swimming pool come from the other humans using it.

These dog swims (and several Lidos do them) are end of season events before pools close for a full clean out, not general swims where non-dog owners would attend.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 12:52

*As far as I am concerned they can have elephants swimming in there if it keeps the Lido running

If I remember correctly it was closed for some time and needed a lot to get it up and running.*

Same with the one I visit in Penzance.

LMAO!

Sounds like your dog lives the life of a prince!

He lives the life he knows he deserves…..he has us well trained to meet his many needs😂

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 12:38

Where I live a floating bouncy castle/ adventure playground affair is open in the dubious waters of the bay. It is heaving. And very popular.

And similarly you sign a liability waiver before entering.

Similarily trampoline parks, quasar zones, adventure play parks etc etc .

But keep on about dog swims.

Write to your MP! These Lidos "rolling the dice "!

I still think you've just got the hump because kyaks.
