Wondering how we can all stand behind & support minorities in this climate.

It is horrendous that there is a climate of fear and that all this far right terrorism is taking place.

are there ways for the general public to give support to minorities who are being targetted?

I was quite frightened of the pro Palestine demos. Still am.

Calling for intifada, and all sorts of other disgraceful calls for violence.

Support for those pro Hamas demos though.

Nobody stood in solidarity with Jews who might feel intimidated by this in their own home city. In fact there is support for it

Months ago when someone posted about these I said how I got caught up at Euston (I was travelling to Manchester for work one Saturday) wearing a star of David and got abuse. How I had to go past a security guard to go to the kosher butcher after a local kosher grocery store was attacked by a man with a machete (there's a video and it's terrifying) and was told I was paranoid and imaginging it. Anti-semitism doesn't exist. Or is minor...or is unimportant apparently.

How dare you make such disgusting stupid comments like you have.
I'm NOT at all racist, and it's vile of you to claim I am.

Just because I don't agree with illegal immigrants coming into the Country, this doesn't make me racist. I disagree with ILLEGAL immigrants because we don't know who they are and their history. Where are all the women and children? Why is it just young men mainly coming in?
And also, how many times have I written that I do NOT agree with violence?

Yet you completely disregard what I've written, just like some other ignorant posters. Go away!

Have you thought about why it's young men? Do you think they want to come here to work to support thier family?

Do you think husbands want to risk thier wives and children travelling to this country?

Milkyway1213 · 06/08/2024 07:34

But they are not ALL thugs!
Did you not see footage of the 73 year old who was arrested for just being present at a protest?

The rioters are a group of down-and-outs who don't want anyone of colour in their country. Driven by racism and ignorance, they seized on the tragic death of innocent children as an excuse to further their hateful narrative.

I hope you watched the video of them stopping cars and checking if the drivers were white. If they weren't, they were severely beaten.

Don't worry. Once football season starts in a week or so, they'll all be back home or at Wetherspoons.

FrothyCothy · 06/08/2024 12:45

But it’s not affecting just “illegal immigrants” (as if that would be justified). Three of my team, black and Asian British born, have expressed their fears about using public transport this week, or to travel long distances to work through cities and towns where there has been disorder. It makes me feel sick thinking about how they must be feeling. We’re lucky enough to be able to be flexible to accommodate their fears and to offer wellbeing support but for those who still have to go out and head into work in places where there are protests, I can’t imagine how they must feel.

MoosesOnGooses · 06/08/2024 08:16

Oh what a load of virtue signalling.

We should treat everyone, minority or majority, with respect and kindness.

Certainly. But what help will that be to people whose hostel is being deliberately attacked by arsonists? Or whose windows are having bricks thrown at them? Or indeed the police, firefighters and paramedics who are also the target of bricks and other weapons?

Spacecrispsnack · 06/08/2024 12:42

Everyone who wants to do good anti racism work would do well to read Nova Reid’s book called The Good Ally.

Marseillaise · 06/08/2024 12:41

Milkyway1213 · 06/08/2024 07:45

I asked you what you think of people wielding machetes in the street with no police presence?

When has this happened? Were the police called?

Marseillaise · 06/08/2024 12:39

Milkyway1213 · 06/08/2024 07:34

But they are not ALL thugs!
Did you not see footage of the 73 year old who was arrested for just being present at a protest?

Yes, and? That is ONE person, not a vast majority of people at the protest, and it's a virtual certainty that they won't be charged.

Marseillaise · 06/08/2024 12:38

Why won't the Government address the real concerns of the people? Why are certain groups allowed to wield knives and machetes in public without intervention by the Police?

Which groups, and when, @Milkyway1213? You do know the person accused of the Southport knife attack is not an immigrant, don't you?

Marseillaise · 06/08/2024 12:36

Milkyway1213 · 06/08/2024 07:21

I'm disgusted that people like myself are given the label of being 'far right'.

Yes, there's been some horrendous riots by low lives who want nothing more than to cause trouble, and I don't condone their actions for one second. They should be arrested and locked up for their violence. I think 99% of people would think the same.

BUT, they represent a tiny tiny minority of people who are trying to get the Government to acknowledge people's concerns about the illegal immigrants being allowed into the Country. (They just go about it the wrong way)
Most protesters wish to protest in peace, yet, because of the troublemakers, everyone is being labelled as thugs. Why?

Why won't the Government address the real concerns of the people? Why are certain groups allowed to wield knives and machetes in public without intervention by the Police?
It's all wrong.

Why do you feel you are being given this label? The OP specifically referred to far right terrorism. Have you been out throwing stones at police and trying to set fire to buildings with people in them? If not, you haven't been labelled by her.

How do you know that your views represent those of "the people"? Do you actually object to, for instance, legal immigrants following their own religion and having places of worship to do so? Why?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 06/08/2024 12:26

@Agn , it’s not terrorism. 🙄
I’m not condoning violence by the way, quite the reverse I hope ALL violence will be dealt with going forward robustly.

Begsthequestion · 06/08/2024 12:23

I think we need to come out en masse in solidarity with our neighbours and stop these racists from smashing up places of worship and trying to burn refugees to death.

Apparently a lot of them are planning to attack different targets this Weds evening (tomorrow). Immigration centres, visa offices etc.

If the police are overwhelmed, then what? It's on us. Like in Liverpool last Friday night. The fash were outnumbered and went home.

We must do what we can to protect our communities and not give ground to the racists.

Sirzy · 06/08/2024 12:11

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 09:51

I think we start by ensuring the language used is correct.

The previous government used the term "illegal migrants" for anyone entering the UK via a boat claiming asylum. They are asylum seekers. They remain so until their claim is processed and either they are given asylum or not.

If they aren't they are returned.

They only become an illegal Immigrant if they are refused stay and avoid return. Or someone outstays their visa.

They are housed in hotels in large numbers because the government decided to stop processing claims and do that. They decided to hold on to all the asylum seekers whilst fighting to send 200 to Rwanda in return for 200 Rwandans. It was always a reciprocal deal.

And under that deal we would have had more British children born to Rwandan parents in the UK as was the Southport stabber.

There is large immigration done via routes such as homes for Ukraine and from Hong Kong. The government allows these people to come and some do have questions over the numbers. But these are far higher by 100's of thousands than those crossing in boats to claim asylum.

You then have the likes of Braverman who use language such as "invasion". She's gone quiet. Is it because she realises the hate she's stoked means that the other day she would have been stopped in her car and deemed not British enough to avoid a beating? Purely because these thugs would have looked at her, deemed her non British (she is) and felt she wasn't to be here. Assumed she was "an illegal". Her parents were immigrants.

It's fucking ridiculous. We know successive governments have tried (and admittedly failed) to stop people feeling they are safer risking their lives crossing the channel than staying in their homes.

But we also leave them no choice. We have NO safe route for these people.

This isn't about keeping our children safe. This isn't about immigration and people's concerns over it.

This is solely and purely about violent thugs deciding anyone who doesn't look British enough to them not being welcome.

And sadly I have NO idea how to stop people fearing that. Because the truth is many British people don't look British (in the eyes of the rioting thugs).

But I'm fucking embarrassed to be British right now - that much I do know.

brilliant post.

Dweetfidilove · 06/08/2024 12:08

@Agn what most of is want is just to be left alone to live in peace and be given the opportunity to work and take care of our families, be kind and receive kindness from our neighbours and just carry on.

I was at a reggae festival this weekend and the crowd made my heart smile - people of all colours, nationality and creed - together enjoying themselves, just living in love and unity. We require nothing more.

Dweetfidilove · 06/08/2024 12:04

@Milkyway1213 what I find absolutely disgusting is that because of your 'protests', we are not talking about the beautiful children murdered last week. They are almost forgotten while all focus is on your spectacle and that is what is disgusting, especially so soon after the police had seemingly woken up to the fact of VAWG.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/08/2024 11:59

This is not a thread about the opinions of Milkyway1213 .

StellaCruella · 06/08/2024 11:55

OP I was thinking this just yesterday. I think just being warm and courteous to everyone you meet is the way forward. Being non-white in this country at the moment must be scary and awful.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/08/2024 11:52

I'm wonder the same OP. Don't let right wingers distract. They'll try.

nfkl · 06/08/2024 11:34

Enough with the biased multiculturalism

Why can't you go to counter protests?

I find it frightening going on protests alone or with my child, yet alone protests countering rioters. I'm very grateful for people who do it.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/08/2024 11:19

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 11:14

Why can't you go to counter protests?

Could be all manner of reasons...fear? Disability? Lack of childcare?

I would encourage people to join the peaceful counter protests if they are able. I found it immensely reassuring to see that the antiracists far outnumbered the racists in my community.

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 11:14

Agn · 06/08/2024 11:07

I don’t want people to think we are all like this. I cannot go out to counter protests but I sure as hell do not want people to think the majority of the public are like this. There will be people frightened and my local town has riots.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 06/08/2024 08:15

If the thread is to 'stand in solidarity with our neighbours who are feeling unsafe' there are a few people in Birmingham and Plymouth feeling unsafe right now. The idiotic violence going on right now isn't restricted by colour. I genuinely think threads like these are purely for whipping people up into a frenzy of virtue-signalling. Just be nice and polite to people you meet, isn't that a natural way for most people to act?

Hankunamatata · 06/08/2024 09:57

Throughout history people look for scape goats when things in economy isn't going well. Cost living is hitting poorest hard, they want to blame someone so easiest targets are immigration illegal or not usually with the same rhetoric of stealing house and jobs - basically state resources. Whether people want to deny it or not there is a strong undercurrent especially in working class areas around illegal immigration which is now flowing into all immigration

Sadly nothing new. It makes me sad. I don't know the answer or how to stop it except trying to teach my kids to have open kinds and hearts

macaroniandcheeze · 06/08/2024 09:55

Locally, ask people if they are ok? Being friendly and kind is natural of course, but you can also make the effort to make people aware that you do not condone or share the attitudes of biogots and rioters.

On a bigger scale, support anti-racist charities and causes, report misinformation you see online, speak to your MP and local council about anti-racism efforts in your community. Google causes to support, either financially or for free with word of mouth, sharing content online, such as Hope Not Hate, Choose Love, Amnesty International, Refugee Action, Show Racism the Red Card, Stop Hate UK.
