Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

It’s not a phrase, but ‘obligated’ - it’s suddenly everywhere.

Please bring back ‘obliged’ - it wasn’t doing any harm!

RhubarbBarBarber · 01/09/2024 08:57

Unlike 'oh my days' which is apparently okay and does not at all make the speaker sound like a twit.

We already mentioned "unalive" but this also is the result of social media censorship. So is chicken boob.

Outside of - when the ‘of’ is redundant, e.g. in ‘outside of the town centre’.

Oh yes! Also in phrases such as 'not that big of a deal', when it's 'not that big a deal.' 😤

"Pooped"

and

"Passed"

Words not phrases but both american adopted words to sanitise pooed or died/passed away.

"He passed" what? A kidney stone?? A large stool???

And "pooped" used by grown adults to make the process sound cuter or less crude.

For a minute I thought you were saying Americans had started using "pooped" as a euphemism for death.

xsquared · 01/09/2024 07:21

"Makes my teeth itch" is so heavily used on Mumsnet, never heard anyone use it in real life.

That and the little blonde girl looking confused. I'm so sick of that. She's probably about 36 now it's been around for so long.

That's Christine Taylor, she's been a few things including Friends and The Craft. She's actually 53.

Auburngal · 01/09/2024 07:17

Spookacular - used far too many times in Halloween

When politicians say 'look'.

😫 I hate it! 😫

ToWhitToWhoo · 31/08/2024 13:52

'Common sense' as used politically. Common sense means having practical and survival skills, not that you agree with right-wing (or left-wing for that matter) politicians.

".... assuming people buying overinflated prices are just wanting to see the show, no?"

Seen on another post. Ending a statement with

no?
yes?
right?

It's incredibly irritating. And often doesn't make sense.

Yeah I just noticed that on the Oasis tickets thread. 🙄

Having a white Christmas will affect supermarket deliveries. You know how people react if they can’t buy their extra 24 loo rolls and 4 bottles of bleach as majority of shops are closed FOR ONE DAY!!!

😆

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 31/08/2024 11:28

I think that's really funny @TheAverageJoanne 😆 AND very apt!

TheAverageJoanne · 31/08/2024 11:19

This meme really irritated me.

What I hate is people sentimentalizing 'white Christmas' and wanting it to snow, especially somewhere where snow is not really seasonal at that time.I'm biased because I hate snow: it makes paths and pavements slippery, and due to co-ordination disabilities, I can't manage that, But in any case, snow is not a key part of Christmas; it probably wasn't snowing in Bethlehem!

Very much agreed. Also "making noise" instead of "making a noise".

i don’t think ‘making noise’ is anything like ‘going gym’ or ‘going toilet’. It’s just being more general about what noise is being made. ‘The life support machine kept making a noise’ vs ‘The children were making noise in the yard’. Or like ‘making hay’, making whoopee’ etc.

I agree ‘going toilet’ is appalling.

StSwithinsDay · 30/08/2024 20:30

Regularly see 'going toilet' on MN 😑

There's a lot to unpick (or unpack).

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 29/08/2024 08:13

My son said it - once...

I can't bloody bear it.
