Phrases you hate

Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

I also hate it when British people say ‘I’m pissed’ or ‘I was so pissed’ when they mean pissed off. To me, pissed means drunk!

I may stand corrected but describing being pissed as angry o think is American? Which is why it always confuses me when non-Americans say it!

Agree

I feel the same about any Americanism being used by British people. Makes me cringe for them.

Making Memories
Lush
Picky Tea/Bits
Hot Chocolate and Pj’s (crops up at Christmas ad nauseam)

Or 🤮🤢. Hot choc and jammies

Which are always comfy.

YouG0GlenCoco · 06/08/2024 23:32

Little legs about a young child. Makes me cringe internally for some reason!

"this programme contains things that may disturb some viewers". The clue is in the title... (Usually medical / crime programmes)

Oh FGS, I get so sick of the 'this programme contains things that may disturb some viewers' shite!

This 'warning' is on before every single episode of Coronation Street, no matter what it's about. And to be honest with you, at least 60% to 70% of the time - often more - there is nothing at all to disturb or trigger anybody. Yes, occasionally there is. But most of the time there isn't. I think (a lot of the time,) 'what have we got to be disturbed about?' Confused Are people really so precious and fragile that they need warnings before EVERYTHING now?!

@GrazingSheep

Naice.

Oh that REALLY fucking pisses me off! Hmm I live in a naice area. Just plop off! You sound like an eeejit!

allthepeoplethatcomearound · 06/08/2024 20:44

People who start a sentence with ‘look…’, before firing off a complete lie or saying something unpopular. Usually a politician or journalist 🤯

FlamingWheelieBinofDespair · 06/08/2024 20:42

Hitmaker

Tottered, meaning walk in high heeled shoes

Flaunted her cleavage / legs / figure, meaning wear clothes in public

CalmFox · 06/08/2024 20:34

Her dark tresses were swept back, it's hair ffs!
No Worries -
hello can I speak to Bob please?
Sorry Bob is away from his desk,
OK no worries.
Can I take a message?
No it's OK, I'll call back, no worries

XenoBitch · 06/08/2024 20:22

"Cool beans"

FlamingWheelieBinofDespair · 06/08/2024 20:21

People who state FACT at the end of a sentence.

People who tweet “There it is. That’s the tweet” at the end of their tweets.

People who repeat incredibly weak “jokes”
or puns that were never funny in the first place - “Bliar” is the one that comes to mind but “Two Tier Keir” is heading rapidly in that direction.

Smellies (as in a Christmas gift)
Gives me the rage
Date night

Oh, I hate “smellies” as well. I don’t know quite why it’s so annoying.

JudgeJ · 06/08/2024 20:13

MrsWinkly · 06/08/2024 09:53

And starting it with "Look,..."
Always a clue as to what's coming next...so condescending 😶

End of, at the end of a usually spurious opinion, it's the written version of a two fingered salute Up Yours.

piece of fruit - unless it’s cut up

If you offer a platter of, say, apples, bananas, oranges etc then it's perfectly normal to say Would you like a piece of fruit, meaning a whole apple, banana, orange.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 06/08/2024 19:13

There are plenty on here...

'Line eyes.........' Angry Followed by a post where someone posts a clearly negative pregnancy test!

'Use your words......' Where the F did this actually come from?! Confused

'Handhold please.........' Just vom!🙄

And yeah, 'one and done' for someone who chose to have one child. Very irksome!

Also hate the term 'dog whistling' when it comes to politics

SinnerBoy · 06/08/2024 18:07

Lots of cookery programme phrases irk me.

Unctuous? Do you really mean that it's smarmy and annoyingly ingratiating?

Oven baked? Yes, I usually bake food in a fucking kettle.

SinnerBoy · 06/08/2024 18:05

PointsSouth · Today 10:48

Heritage tomatoes.

I will disagree with that. They are old varieties (other vegetables / fruits as well) which became unpopular, because of size, or shape. Producers continued to grow them, because they have qualities such as better taste and disease resistance.

Theres a continual breeding in programme, where they cross them with commercial varieties, until they look / taste / have the same shelf life.

Somebody had the bright idea of selling them, instead of throwing them away and it's just a marketing device.

Jifmicroliquid · 06/08/2024 18:04

MrsWinkly · 06/08/2024 09:42

It's the Ocado ad. So irritating. I have to turn it down when it comes on (every 5 minutes...)😠

That’s the one! It’s on Absolute radio constantly!
It drives me mad.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 06/08/2024 17:47

Coughsweet · 05/08/2024 22:53

Also the “boobing”,

Boobing the little man whilst snacking on picky bits

This should be illegal!!!!!!!

fitzwilliamdarcy · 06/08/2024 17:44

Oh I also hate "pours" when used to by the Daily Mail and their ilk to describe women - "she poured her curves into the black dress". She's not a liquid!!!

And hubby, hubz, hubster or any other horrible twee variety on husband.

CompleteOvaryAction · 05/08/2024 22:28

Not an annoying phrase as such, but the contraction of "a lot" to "alot" - predictive text even corrects it, but I still see it online. A lot.

Hyperbole and a Half: The Alot is Better Than You at Everything

This really helped me with this one.
