To think there's got to be at least a couple of MNers involved in the rioting ?

Based in the broad views seen here, I can't believe that there isn't someone who is involved either passively or actively.
If you are one of those, would you like to explain why?

Also we JUST had a sodding election. At which people had the ability to make their feelings know at the polls. People did - and the Conservatives lost big time to labour. Several Reform candidates got in. I am not thrilled about Reform, I don't like them, I didn't vote for them, but they were democratically elected so them's the breaks. The people setting fire to things are not some downtrodded group with no other way of making their voices be heard. They are twats. And Nigel Farage is a twat for playing up to this idea he is somehow politically oppressed.

A lot of councils have cut back on children's activities, youth clubs, even paddling pools because of budget issues But we apparently have to turn the whole country into a big adventure playground for (mostly but not only) men to vent their anger on regardless the cost because "they feel ignored". Fuck no.

brunettemic · 05/08/2024 22:57

I don’t know about that but a lot of them, male and female (laughing at the people on here saying there isn’t women) seem to here far fewer teeth than the average person.

I suspect there is a silent significant proportion of the population who don't support the rioting, but do support what is being demonstrated against. I believe what was considered being middle of the road politically is now being wrongly labelled far right.

Statements like look after our own problems first. Or to ask a limit on the amount of single male immigrants arriving and being put up in hotels in small towns as well as cities. Should not be considered racist. Yet anyone of late speaking this type of talk get branded racist.

This is the same issue happening right across Europe and our politicians have ignored this simmering unrest for too long, and are now reaping the consequences.

They aren't "demonstrating" against anything. You get protests/demonstrations that turn violent. Usually then people will have signs. I see no signs, some flags OK but no signs. And there was no protest that turned violent. Just a bunch of people that want to have fun setting fire to police cars and bins while the weather is nice.

I also really object to the idea being pushed that the more shouty/violent someone is, the more they somehow care about an issue. Or the more justified/correct they are. Sorry no- if person A is setting fire to a bin that doesn't mean they have been "pushed beyond their limit" compared to person B who is protesting peacefully. I just means they like setting fire to bins.

RosaRoja · 05/08/2024 22:53

@TooBigForMyBoots well said. We saw NF’s face at every turn, on every TV programme. Lots of talk about immigration on the radio (I listen to LBC), in the press. It’s not not being talked about. People with “legitimate concerns” have been heard and listened to. Rwanda was never going to work, so let’s forget that. Let’s see what Labour come up with , the Tories have done incredible damage to community relations. The far-right is salivating at the prospect of some rich pickings, or just destabilising the country.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/08/2024 22:46

No, but it’s pearl clutching to suggest anybody with concerns over immigration is a fascist, which is basically the stock response on here.

What a load of bollocks.🙄 Most people have concerns over immigration. It was widely discussed by politicians, public, including Mnetters, and journalists in the run up to the GE a few weeks ago. It is still widely discussed. Discussing it doesn't mean facism.

If someone is being called a facist on Mnet, it's probably because they're a facist.🤷‍♀️

My feeling is that MN is far too left wing to ever be involved. I don’t think anyone on here would do this.

😂😂😂😂

edit I can point you to an Amnesty report from Autumn last which covers this question in quite good detail if you would genuinely like to know more on this specifically q. This might serve better than an enormous post here, since what i’ve typed is already big 😂

Similarly with some other resources providing context for eg: the apparent uneven balance of single male asylum seekers, etc. I don’t know how it works with posting links here but if it is permitted and you would like it, please let me know.

Ultimately, and for the sake of brevity, I think we can be frank about admitting that neither of us is going to change our overall perspective based on this conversation, which is ok. But I think it’s hugely important for both to be able to listen and take away facts from conversations like this. I firmly agree with you that asylum seekers should not ‘take away’ resources from established populations (I believe that they need not, either, with better governance). I can accept your perspective that there is a lot around UK immigration policy that needs be made far more transparent. I think that immigration, legal or not, and asylum issues are often conflated deliberately by bad faith actors and also by those in power for whom it is a handy distraction from an unwillingness or inability to resolve issues.

Ultimately, I think that, since the UK actually hosts less than 1% of the global refugee population, it is fair enough for the answer to “why are they here” to be “because we were there”, both in the sense of Britain’s colonial and military past, but also in the sense of the benefits our country has enjoyed by being the default language for global trade and industry. It’s not unreasonable to realise how a combination of both of these things makes the country an attractive prospect for people. What I will say, is that I think the ‘myth’of the UK being a tolerant, prosperous and welcoming place to rebuild a life has been hugely disestablished in recent years. Personally I think this is both a huge shame, and something for us to collectively feel shame for. Perspectives can, will, and do differ :)

Sorry this was meant to be a reply to @ATenShun’s question about why Afghans wanting to leave Afghanistan don’t stop in Pakistan but I didn’t post it correctly

I think these men, if they were aware of or have an opinion about Mumsnet users, would despise and denigrate us. It’s hard to think of two demographics which are further apart.

There were women involved too.

I'll stick with illegal immigrant thanks.

Well you’d be quite wrong :)
it’s perfectly legal to enter a country by irregular means for the purpose of seeking asylum.

which is just as well cos it’s not currently possible to make an asylum claim from outside the country either

I've been throwing bricks at the rozzers all day. I'm cream crackered.

😆

That would be to presume these twats can read op.

What concerns about immigration are those then? Because half the things they are blamed for are false; our underfunded public services & housing crisis etc and the other half, a threat to our values, way of life & Britishness comes from a place of racist Nationalism.

We don't have an independent press in the UK, we have media owned by a handful of right wing billionaires. For years, the UK has been hollowed out by the government and instead of reporting what is going on, the press have blamed the poor and immigrants. Immigrants have become very convenient scapegoats.

Zanatdy · 05/08/2024 22:20

I’m sure there’s got to be some partners involved. I said to colleagues today if your DH / partner was involved wouldn’t you have their bags packed ready for their return? My colleague reminded me these people don’t think the same as us, so they probably don’t think it’s terrible. My 20yr old keeps asking me what setting fire to their local community is achieving and I’m thankful that he wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing

RosaRoja · 05/08/2024 22:20

I listened to that interview in the car. What a fool. A dangerous fool.

This is what I mean. Responding to a completely fictional, fantasy post where I said the rioting ‘isn’t that bad’ and the thugs ‘have legitimate concerns’.

Just mind blowing.

It’s mind blowing to reply to a post about the far-right thugs by implying everyone thinks those with immigration concerns are far-right. You were conflating the 2, hence my reply.

No, but it’s pearl clutching to suggest anybody with concerns over immigration is a fascist, which is basically the stock response on here. The merest sign of not mirroring absolutely everything they say and it’s all ‘You’re clearly a far right apologist, I see you for what you are, you’re full of hate’. They sound utterly unhinged, totalitarian even.

Maybe on paper but how many 25 year old Albanian men would you say actually need asylum?

The Albanians coming over were economic migrants and were sent back.

RosaRoja · 05/08/2024 22:09

We are talking racist far-right thugs. Don’t try and downplay it. Do you remember the anti-Brexit marches? Those too were “legitimate concerns”. Attended by thousands of people & there was no violence or destruction. So don’t give me this legitimate concerns business. It doesn’t excuse racism , criminality, violence.

Nobody is clutching pearls ! How reductive and sexist your insults are .. They're literally doing nazi salutes?!

doublecappuccino · 05/08/2024 22:03

This is not a debate about asylum . Just hate filled yobs who look high as kites .. not an ounce of kindness or logic between them

Seeking asylum. You said yourself they were asylum seekers. You can't have legal asylum seekers because you can't get a Visa to the UK solely on the basis of seeking asylum.

Since we voted for Brexit the small boat crossings began, because we lost the ability to return people as well as rejecting the opportunity to process claims in France.

Illegal immigrants are overwhelmingly those people who've overstayed their visas or arrived on false documentation.

ATenShun · 05/08/2024 20:56

They are most definately illegal immigrants when they arrive. Get smuggled into a country with no documents illegally. What would you call it?

The rioters are far-right in what they’re doing: indiscriminate violence based on skin colour or religion. It’s not pearl-clutching to refer to them as the thugs they are.
