Beyond disgusting

We are luckily enough to be in Paris watching some of the Olympics - it has been fantastic - bit hot and steamy, poor air con but waiters actually trying to understand my poor french rather than the usual dismissive look!

Staying in an average 4star hotel, air con average but it has been vv hot and humid. Old converted office type building, narrow corridors and 4 small rooms on our floor.

We came back last night to a stench - only way to describe it. Then realised what it was, the American family in the room opposite had left their childs diaper folded up on the floor outside their room - not bagged. Their door is opposite ours about 1.5 metres away.

Went into our room, aircon had not been on all day and it honked. Opened windows sprayed deodorant no luck.

At 2330 - had had enough, knocked gently on their door, baby crying so not asleep. Mum opens it with a second diaper in her hand, bent down and put it on the floor by the other one and then said can I help you?

Now fairly obvious at this point one of her DCs has the trots - but who in their right mind thinks it is ok, to wrap up your childs diaper and leave it on the corridor for other guests to smell.

I politely asked her to put them in the bin
REsponse : I can't they smell so bad.
ME: Why do you think it is OK to share your childs stinking shits with other guests by leaving them in the corridor - my room stinks
REsponse: this is normal in the USA
ME: Well normal in Europe is to bag them and put them in the garbage, can I suggest you do that and take them outside to a bin on the street.
REsponse: No way, it is too late and started to close the door
ME: You really are disgusting - and promptly kicked the diapers into their room before she shut the door
REsponse : you can't do that
Me: watch me, either you bin them or I will bang on your door every 5 minutes, wake up your kids until you do

Two other doors opened to see what was going on - both American families who defended their friends actions.

So I offered to bang on all their doors until someone put them in a bin.
Stand off - I raised my hand to bang on the door and one of the men picked them up and legged it down the stairs.

I have not smelt anything quite that bad for a long long time.

They called me all sorts of names but seriously this can not be normal American behaviour?

Exactly this, that gobby mouth could get you in trouble sometime op

And this is why people continue to be CFs and other people put up with it because people are “too scared” to pull people up on their very obvious shitty (literally in this case) behaviour

And before someone says well phone reception why should they put themselves at supposed risk and OP shouldn’t?

StormingNorman · 04/08/2024 21:07

Not all heroes wear capes! Well done, OP!

Bollocks, there were plenty of others in their party who could have removed them.
I deal with a lot of Americans for my job and there does seem to be a bit of a sense of entitlement - someone explained it to me that due to the tipping culture in The US they feel they can behave how they like by throwing money at staff in hotesl, restaurants etc.

I've never encountered Americans behaving like that because of tipping, and I have 17 years of experience living in the US. The Americans are generally very polite and considerate, and have great social skills, IME.

Agree it's disgusting. I do feel for the woman trying to care for an ill baby in a foreign hotel room with people banging repeatedly on the door as well though. Could no one have called down to Reception and asked staff to sort it?

That is way beyond the call of duty. It was the family’s job to bag up the nappies and take them outside. There was a whole group of them!

pikkumyy77 · 04/08/2024 21:06

Not an American custom. They may have thought it belonged in the hallway like hotel plates/meals sometimes do for pickup. But that would be wring in the US too.

TruthorDie · 04/08/2024 21:04

Totally not a typical thing to do in America. They are just dirty scum bags. Why should the hotel patrons have to smell it and why would the staff clean it up. Good on you for booting them back into their room. Amused at people saying you should help by cleaning up the nappies

You obviously feel some bit irrational or guilty if you've posted here looking for back up..I'm sure you're happy to see all your fellow selfish , arrogant uncaring, self centred friends have backed you up. A decent person would offer a helping hand not ridiculed a family with sick children.. I hope you're never in that position yourself.

Do you often need the help of complete strangers to look after your children?

NoisyDenimShaker · 04/08/2024 21:01

Same here, plus you never know who's on the other side of that door and whether they have a knife or a gun or are otherwise just crazy.

That is disgusting, but you don't sound like a very nice person

What was she supposed to do?
Clean up herself?

NoisyDenimShaker · 04/08/2024 21:01

LoneHydrangea · 04/08/2024 19:38

I agree it's disgusting, but I would not have reduced myself to squabbling in the corridor. Phone reception, let them take it up with mannerless guests.

LonelyInDville · 04/08/2024 21:00

I’m American and would’ve done the same thing ans you OP. And I don’t think that’s normal at all in America, never seen or heard of it before in my life. I would’ve put it in outside bin like normal people do.

I thought this was going to be yet another mumsnet post where someone did something utterly egregious to you, and you just quietly fumed, vented online and got annoyed with commenters not somehow fixing the crime for you, whilst leaking their backbone down your thigh.
I was however very pleasantly surprised that you not only told them what for, but also booted their turd back into their room.
Bravo!
You are exactly the kind of person I like to be friends with.

This 😂

Do you think hotel staff are sub humans to clean up crap that should be put in a bag by the parents? I know many people dont value customer service, but this is an extra shitty (pun intended) comment.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 04/08/2024 20:57

Haven’t they heard of scented nappy bags?? You double them up if you have to. Or take them downstairs to ask to put them in the main bin.

Bravo, OP, bravo. I can’t stand selfish fuckers like them.

RedditFinder · 04/08/2024 20:52

I bet people are always taking advantage of you.

Do you? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I do just fine.

Itisjustmyopinion · 04/08/2024 20:57

You absolutely did the right thing. Not normal at all to literally throw your shit into an hotel corridor. And why are posters saying OP shouldn’t have disturbed them and phoned reception. Well then reception would have been disturbing the feral parents so why waste time

Laughable that some posters think you are in the wrong. Obviously CFs just like the people you encountered

Happiestwhen · 04/08/2024 20:56

Hmm maybe take the nappies out to the bin herself if it was really that bad instead of moaning about it, the smell couldnt have been as bad as she made out or you would have constant stenches when staying in hotels. So ya, be proactive & you know, helpful (shocker) instead of massively overreacting.

InsolentNoise · 04/08/2024 20:56

Good for you, OP!
Ignore the stupid twats on here who would blithely just put up with it, apparently 😂

Superhansrantowindsor · 04/08/2024 20:53

Would you like me to help you by going to reception and getting some bin bags for your dirty nappies?

That would have been my opening. Life is too short to be physically kicking up a stink over dirty nappies. If they’d refused I’d have asked housekeeping to deal with it. The housekeeper can then either deal with it or inform the parents of consequences the hotel might have in place for uncooperative guests.

TheBizzies · 04/08/2024 19:21

gross but there are gross people
ever not just Americans

I agree, someone had left an unbagged nappy on the bench ( and scattered half a packet of biscuits on the floor)inside a changing cubicle at the swimming pool yesterday. There is a bin at the door less than ten feet away.

RedditFinder · 04/08/2024 20:52

ttcat37 · 04/08/2024 20:38

I’m not saying it’s thuggish to not want to smell other people’s children’s nappies. It is thuggish to bang on the door late at night, start an argument, kick nappies into a room (?!) then threaten to wake up everyone and their kids until someone does what you say, when you can just call down to reception and ask for it to be dealt with in a calm and polite way like civilised people.

I bet people are always taking advantage of you.

Christine1998 · 04/08/2024 20:51

Happiestwhen · 04/08/2024 20:32

Maybe they were waiting for a few nappies to build up, they could have been running up and down the stairs all night otherwise. Have some empathy. The poor dc(s) are unwell and the parents are having to deal with it all but yeah you just be unhelpful, selfish, irrational & mean
That's bound to help them 🙄

All they had to do was use fragranced nappy bags and leave them in the bin.

Kipperthedawg · 04/08/2024 20:51

The op reads American though, with 'diapers' and 'garbage'. Is this a reverse and you are the nappy-neerdowell

betterangels · 04/08/2024 20:50

That's so beyond gross. Wow.
