To be embarrassed to be from Hull right now?

These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

Oh. Didn't realise the rioters were being lead and encouraged by Farage? Not seen anything where he is condoning the riots. Link please....

Are you familiar with the concept of dog whistling?

Oh boy! You could start by looking at the context. And of course I'm sure you know that GB showed nothing like the racism we have seen in the last 10 years.

Yes, it has definitely got worse in the last 10 years.

Are you talking about his bigot comment?

No I was talking about him saying "British jobs for British workers".

These sort of things can be linked to people like Tommy Robinson, but not Farage. The only link to him is that he is against immigration. And that’s where the link stops. He’s never advocated rioting, looting and attacking police to get a point across.

He may not have done but he has encouraged a strong sense of hatred for immigrants. Remember his poster of queues which was total fake?

He's taken the video down now - and has put up another one attempting to justify him "simply asking questions" - and claiming that he wasn't contributing to the misinformation about the murderer being a muslim boat immigrant and being under M16 surveillance - 'questions' he asked before the riots started. He was a major contributor.

I'm absolutely positive that you can see how Farage works. Either that, or you actually believe in his 'not me guv, I'm just standing here' approach to incitement. But I doubt that even the thugs believe that, they seem to know who their friends are.

Of course there have been concerns for a long time. Surely you can see that the racist hate filled rhetoric of some of our politicians has added fuel to the fire?

You must see how he has stirred up these kind of reactions even if he hasn't explicitly said he backs these riots? Obviously he won't say that as he likes to pretend he is a moderate voice of the people.

Your last sentence doesn't make sense.

If the hard left are anywhere right now they're helping to stop the violence of extremist Farage-led racists attacking minorities, and then joining in the city clean ups - as we've seen in Bristol and Liverpool.

It would be a good idea to check up on immigration rules and the asylum system before commenting.

Yes, legal routes such as work, study and spouse visas exist. But the legal routes for people seeking asylum are very few and far between. Of course there’s the Ukrainian visa scheme (Ukrainians are now unable not allowed to bring over family members from Ukraine, leaving parents and children separated), the Hong Kong “visa” and family reunification scheme (relatively few visas are given this way). Can you add any more?

The legal way to seek asylum in the UK has always been to request asylum in the UK - I.e you have to be on UK soil to claim asylum. They do not, for the vast majority of asylum seekers, accept claims from overseas. The new Illegal migration act sought to make claiming asylum by arriving in the UK illegal, leaving no routes whatsoever. The previous government left claims unprocessed and people stuck in hotels, detention centres and barges with no hope of having their claims processed or being deported. Just in limbo. Not able to work, contribute, integrate or build connections for years for some people. The private companies with government connections that ran the hotels etc did make millions in profit though, so that’s nice.

Oh, and as stated above, the 1951 Refugee Convention does not require a person to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. They are allowed to seek asylum in country where they have ties (could be language), connections, or a higher possibility of work.

TL;DR you can’t claim there are safe routes for asylum seekers by conflating them with work/study/spouse visas.

I'm not talking about asylum seekers. I was talking about immigration in response to another poster. France had actually offered to have a processing centre there where refugees could be held and applications processed. The Tory government declined the offer but hopefully Labour will look into that. Our views on immigration, legal or otherwise, are clearly miles apart. I have my opinion, you have yours. Pointing out that according to some on mn the only people concerned about immigration are the knuckle draggers currently rioting. But many people with concerns are just like me - middle aged woman in professional job, upper working class. I've no beef with any immigrants already here. I dont want any more coming through until we have sorted out obvious issues caused to our infrastructure because we have too many people here.

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 11:14

That's not what I said, is it.

I don't understand a mindset that jumps to "if the government do a thing I don't agree with, people will riot, so they better not do that"

That mindset shares characteristics with people who think "women deserve it" if the are wearing a short skirt. It's not outright saying the violence is acceptable. But its placing the blame away from where it should be, which is with the person/people being violent

Edited

Imagine the riots over the last 10 years if people rioted every time the government did something they didn't agree with!

ArmFromUll · 04/08/2024 14:25

2dogsandabudgie · 04/08/2024 11:01

No it didn't, concerns with immigration started way back under Blair's Labour. Anyone who had concerns were shouted down as racist and weren't listened to.

Our Tradesmen protesting because they were being undercut by cheap foreign labour, and being insulted by people saying they didn't want the jobs or didn't have the skills. They were peaceful protests by men who just wanted to earn a decent wage so they could pay the bills. Before this Gordon Brown had promised British jobs for British workers which is why if you look at the photos from that time this slogan was on the placards. He never kept that promise.

So it doesn't just go back to the last Government, tackling immigration has been at the forefront of politics for years. Each time there's an election parties have promised they will sort this but they haven't. Every time this happens the working class feels ignored and let down by the people they elected.

Of course there have been concerns for a long time. Surely you can see that the racist hate filled rhetoric of some of our politicians has added fuel to the fire?

I'm not embarrassed to be from Hull. I'm fuming that people are doing this to our beautiful city. Especially on Sesh day where people go to have a lovely time and where Hull is typically at its best.

I really want to visit Hull after reading this thread. Sounds lovely.

@Fartooold and @Avalane waving at fellow SAFC fans!

I am a season ticket holder but live about 40 mins away. I was born there tho and my parents still live there in a gorgeous area, I really really love the place and it has loads going for it and specially with lots of recent developments.

My mam had a business in an area of town very close to about 3 mosques, she ran it for 30 years and there was never any bother. She is devastated at what had happened on friday.

The clean up operation was heartwarming to see.

I don't follow him. I don't follow far right racists. Hopefully the police will find his tweets useful though.

In a month I’d hope a new gov would not be foolish enough to put in place trafficking policies that cause this

Starmer's trafficking policies caused this?

Half the thugs would not even know what "trafficking policies" mean. Were they shouting slogans about it? No, they were shouting about Muslims and the p word.

Trying to blame this on anything other than racism, encouraged and orchestrated by the far right, is shameful.

It also makes me wonder about that poster's motivations, tbh.

Edited

My motivations? I'm deeply dissapointment in some of the people from my city.

I wouldn't be embarrassed about being from Hull, I doubt many of the people rioting are from there. These idiots are travelling far and wide to get in on the 'fun'. It's clear it's not all the local communities as I have seen lots of locals out defending mosques and going out to clean up the mess. Just be proud of them instead of focusing on the rent a mob.

What a mealy-mouthed way of saying that it's not the racist rioters' fault they are attacking innocent minorities, looting shops and gleefully committing arson for fun.

You'd rather avoid riots but these poor far right thugs have no choice..
