just curious really. DH and I have never done this, and I wondered if that is the norm?

You sound it and overly invested in what other families do and find useful.

Not at all. Track away.

just gave my opinion which I thought was the point of this?

I’m not worked up at all.

@flaxensunshine just because some people do things differently to you doesn't make them 'weird'. If you don't want to do it then don't. Why get so worked up about it?

BiteyShark · 04/08/2024 08:07

Those belittling the 'dinner on the table'. It works the other way as well. DH has often done breakfast for me after a dog walk. He knows I take roughly an hour but can be up to 1.5. He will check to see if I am still walking or driving back to gauge when to get everything ready.

We simply use this instead of phoning/texting.

oObyeOo · 04/08/2024 07:29

I find it really odd that everyone on here who uses it has given really good, valid, reasonable reasons… which don’t have any issues with trust.

Yet those who don’t just say it’s weird, or untrusting. With no other explanation.

Those who think it’s a trust issue must have those issues, otherwise you would see beyond that and to how useful it can be.

I don’t agree that they are good valid reasons.

its just weird. People saying i know when he/she will be home FFS what bullshit, you are insecure and tracking all day. Just cook dinner and if they are not there they can heat it up!!

how on earth do you think people managed years ago!!!

GoodSummerDays · 04/08/2024 07:57

Used tracking a few times for DS when he started secondary school, to make sure he arrived at school and was getting home safe. We stopped after the first few months when he'd become used to the journey.

It's never occurred to us to use one for eachother (DH and I), I'm not sure what we'd need it for really.

Magn01a · 04/08/2024 07:43

Yeah we alldo. I’m in my 50s and 34 years married so nothing to do about trust it’s just useful.

There are 15 pages of people explaining the practicalities and benefits

Although I didn’t, I can get on board with children. Someone’s spouse or partner though? Having read a lot of the comments it still doesn’t sit well with me. But then again other people’s relationships are nothing to do with me. If both parties are equally happy to do it who am I to say it’s right or wrong?

CurlewKate · 04/08/2024 07:40

@oObyeOo "There are 15 pages of people explaining the practicalities and benefits"

Which can be summed up by "it means I can have dinner on the table"

I want to know how it benefits children to be tracked.

DoAClassicCamel · 04/08/2024 07:34

Thank you @letstrythatagain i understand why families do it with their children but I don’t think it’s for me. The one time our DD asked us to share locations when she was at a festival I found myself checking all the time and worried about her more.

I can totally understand this. I think it's best my eldest has stopped sharing for that very reason! 😆.

It's telling that there are standard reasons people for doing things that are "off" and we all secretly know they are absolutely rubbish. "We have tracking so I can have dinner on the table" "He tracks me so he knows I'm safe" "I only smack my children when they run into the road or put their fingers in an electric socket"....

What an odd leap

@DoAClassicCamel yep no prob. So we've three kiddies. They all go different ways to hobbies etc. I play taxi. lol. So if they go off after with their mates I can see where they are and you can just press 'drive to' on the app and I'm there.

As for the other half he works away abroad a lot and the kids love to see where in the world he is. He spend a few months on a tiny island somewhere (couldn't even tell you where 🤣) and they could see where he was and the countries around him. They'd even then pop it into a google earth to see more of the surrounding.

Honestly this debate seems to come up all the time on here. It's not creepy but just what we as a family like to have. It's not hurting anyone.

Though I must say that the eldest (she's 15 now) chose to take herself off a few months back. That's fine and totally her decision.

time2changeCharlieBrown · 04/08/2024 07:24

No but I’d like it more for anxiety reasons as he works away a lot and is often all over the country I’d find it reassuring to know that he’s on his way back home etc
dont think dh would like it not that I don’t trust him or think he’s up to no good just that it’s nice if he’s not answering and I could see he was safely on his way back home

oObyeOo · 04/08/2024 07:23

Changingplace · 04/08/2024 01:25

You know talking on the phone and not being aware of your surroundings is actually more of a risk?

Texting whilst driving is also more dangerous than calling

oObyeOo · 04/08/2024 07:21

flaxensunshine · 04/08/2024 00:24

What?? I’m paranoid?? I don’t understand your response?

I know where my husband is during work hours and then when if not at home he tells me where he is going. Why on earth would I need to know more? I completely trust him and if he was going to do anything then I’m sure he would find a way

I guess he doesn’t take himself to remote areas or do extreme sports?

Also, is it control if you have other family members on location?

@letstrythatagain "Yes we do and the kids. I find it very strange when people refer to it as 'creepy' or are derogatory about it tbh. It's just practical"

In what way is it practical to track your kids?

Bertsmum22 · 04/08/2024 07:13

SouthLondonMum22 · 03/08/2024 18:35

Because I’m entitled to privacy and DH isn’t entitled to know where I am at all times.

Because it takes 5 seconds to text ‘will be at the train station for 6:30’ or ‘traffic is crazy, will be closer to 7 now’.

I’ve also never made sure that dinner is ready ‘on time’ for DH.

lol

Lj8893 · 04/08/2024 06:56

We do, but we don’t use it routinely.
We did ir after DH lost his old phone, we decided it would have been really useful!
I now use it mainly for DD as she is now being more independent and going out with friends etc.
No point using it to track DH, he is only ever at work or the golf course!
