just curious really. DH and I have never done this, and I wondered if that is the norm?

Absolutely not.

Mammma91 · 03/08/2024 19:42

I do, there was a serious sexual assault local to me recently and the first thing I done was activate locations on both our phones. If I’m out on my own (with or without the kids) and I miss a phone call from him I want him to check my location. It’s unconditional.

Echobelly · 03/08/2024 19:42

No, we just tell each other where we're going and what we're doing. We don't have location on kids' phones either.

hellobl · 03/08/2024 19:41

Single but yes I would. Mostly because I lose my phone a lot. The kids are on life360

Not really. We both have Snapchat but only so we can see where our teenager is if we need to and vice versa. Never use it as we normally just respond to WhatsApp messages and generally discuss what we are all up to anyway.

grafittiartist · 03/08/2024 19:36

I would hate this!
Don't like everyone to know where I am all the time.

Snorrrring · 03/08/2024 19:35

Our whole family use Life360 - kids are 21 now and they still voluntarily use it - it's been useful to know where people are. We have nothing to hide from each other and if we did we could switch it off - have asked the kids to switch it off but they are not bothered - we have used this since they were 10 - no big deal.

Lilacapples · 03/08/2024 19:34

No not something I’ve thought about. I do have his sign in details for find my iPhone though and vice versa if I really wanted to see.

NoraLuka · 03/08/2024 19:32

I’d split up with my DP of 10 years if he insisted on tracking each other, I’ve been in a controlling relationship before and I’d rather be single than be in another one. It would be the same the other way around, if I felt I needed to track him what would be the point in staying together? That’s just us, but I understand how it would be useful to locate someone who goes cycling/running/has a random schedule.

I worry (it is very far down my list of things to worry about, tbf) that these things are becoming normalised step by step and one day we’ll all be tracked by the State - I’m well aware that makes me sound like I should be wearing a tin foil hat and I’m not saying it would happen in any of our lifetimes, but it could happen.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 03/08/2024 19:32

We do, he runs and cycles a lot so good to know where he is in terms of how long he might be before getting home, also travels with work so again can see where he is to start dinner etc.

N4ish · 03/08/2024 19:26

I would find it incredibly oppressive to feel that my partner was tracking me everywhere I went.

blueshoes · 03/08/2024 19:17

Sad to disappoint but the uses of location tracking are far more mundane than the cloak and dagger dreamt up by feverish minds.

Doesn't take much of an imagination to conjure up the idea of an affair to be honest. 20% of the population has been caught out done it!

I agree with you about the lines being easy to cross. I don't personally think it's a great thing if the younger generation are completely unbothered about everyone knowing where they are all the time. Partly why I do talk about it with my kids. Or at least the one who has a phone. I think they need to consider the pros and cons themselves.

Absolutely.

I don't think it's always a bad thing by any means, I can certainly see it having its' uses - but I'm not a fan of it being normalised in any sense - and I think it's definitely heading that way.

DH often goes off fishing alone at night - knowing exactly where he is in case he gets hurt could be really helpful, but I'd definitely only want it in specific incidents rather than as 24-7 thing.

somepeopleareunbelievable · 03/08/2024 19:19

I do activate it in situations where it's useful, but then I turn it off again

somepeopleareunbelievable · 03/08/2024 19:18

Dh shares with me but I choose not to share with him. It just doesn't feel right to me (it's a bit like I have the whatsapp read feature turned off too). My life is busy and stressful and I reserve the right to bugger off somewhere for an hour or so and not be questioned / tracked (e.g. finish work at 3 and go for a walk instead of straight home, not go off and have a affair)

namechangetheworld · 03/08/2024 19:14

That's what it's used for in the majority of cases, yes. Akin to people placing tracking devices on their spouse's car to catch them in the act, except this comes with the added threat of them KNOWING you're tracking them 24/7, to ensure they daren't ever put a foot wrong.

But no, I'm sure you're one of the women on this thread who legitimately uses this to 'get the tea on' and 'make sure my partner is safe on the perilous fifteen minute journey to work.'

You think that the app is for me to check whether my dh is having an affair. Nope.

Once again, it he was determined, he would have another phone. As mentioned by @behindthemall it is easy to turn location on and off to conceal an affair even without a second phone.

My mind does not go down the same rabbit holes as you or others on this thread.

Fair enough. I suspect most families don't do that, though.

There are lots of people on here saying entire families share locations - so I'd wonder how those people would normalise it one sense, but advise against it another. I agree that it's interesting and personally think the lines between "acceptable" and "controlling" can be crossed far too easily with this kind of technology.

Bluebirdover · 03/08/2024 19:06

@blueshoes oh give over.....

If you noticed that the "app" turned off you'd be all over it checking all the time.

I never ever need to check my DH, total trust and glad I'm not you, because you're either distrustful or paranoid.

Give over? okey. I sleep well, thanks.

Heliotropolis · 03/08/2024 19:11

No, never used it, never seen the need and to be honest, I’m illiterate when it comes to tech.

blueshoes · 03/08/2024 19:09

Bluebirdover · 03/08/2024 19:07

@blueshoes

Another good reason not to location share. Keep scraping.

What on earth are you talking about?

What's scarping??

Not 'scarping' but 'scraping' as in 'scraping the bottom of the barrel'. It is an expression.

Anononony · 03/08/2024 19:08

My partner and my mum can see me on Google 24/7, I drive the kids across the country and both like to be able to check how far away I am, if I've been diverted, that I made it safely etc and it's easier just to leave it on than send a new link every time

I can see my mum all the time too, set up again for travel (her coming to ours) but I also use it to check that she's at home before I video call. I can't see OH but never needed to set it up, he doesn't drive and tbh doesn't go out much without us 🤣

Ummm are people taking about different location tracking?

We use find my phone to track our location.

Probably if they have different phones I have Apple and DH has Android so I guess if we wanted to track each other we would probably have to use some different app for it to be possible
