To contact this jazz band and tell them to stop using this word?

There’s a local jazz event taking place soon and the bio describes the band as “Dixieland”. I remember the Dixie Chicks apologising and changing their name.

The word derives from the American South and is also used in a Confederate song. Here’s the full Wikipedia page for “Dixie”. Basically, its usage is racist.

I was surprised to see the word at all but also not surprised as I live in a very white Reform/Tory voting area.

AIBU to contact the band and ask them to change their description? Or leave them alone? I know what the reaction will be if I do contact them: just music blah blah been a traditional word for this style of jazz blah blah world gone mad woke blah joy thief etc. But I see no reason to use this word in this day and age.

Also, you couldn't use The Pink Stuff on it because you'd have no idea where it was

do you remember the time when there was no spray on bath cleaner? It was Ajax powder or nothing and that was a real bum grinder

Lacdulancelot · 03/08/2024 17:32

Nobody should expect that Wikipedia is a completely reliable source of information.

I don't know if would give me a migraine but I can't eat it because I hate oranges. They deserve my hate for the pain they have caused me. I have to say I'm luckier than some, did you know there are people who get migraines if they eat chocolate, now that is truly horrific.

I'm making some blabkberry jam tomorrow (hand picked at great cost to my hand's skin integrity, I might add!!). Could you manage a jar of that?
I have a bowl of oranges on the table in front of me and am sad that you and their kin are mortal enemies!

FrancisSeaton · 03/08/2024 17:28

Oh ffs seriously

Hi fellow sufferer, people generally don't believe me so it is nice to meet someone who knows the pain of oranges although I'm sorry you suffer as well.

Shall we start a ban oranges campaign?

Can you eat mamalade though?

Did they have Tango in the sixties?!

Always felt like more of an 80s/90s thing to me — somehow more modern than Sunkist, or Nazi Coke substitute Fanta, or orangeade made by companies like Barr.

So I looked it up and — Tango's a fifties brand?? And only just — 1950! Their marketing department did a bloody good job on me, didn't they?

Sunkist though? Not until 1979! But it feels so much older to me… I can so easily picture a fifties-style bottle of Sunkist. And while Fanta is technically older than Tango see previous strikeout apparently the orange flavour of Fanta didn't come out until 1966. But Orangina is apparently way earlier, going back to the 1930s (but as a kid in the 90s, I only ever saw it in France). Generic orangeade presumably older, with the 19th century fashion for flavoured fizzy waters.

Thank you for provoking a rabbit-hole dive; I enjoyed that Grin

I honestly feel like we had Sunkist as kids in the 50s. Don't know how I've got that one so wrong.

OMG I'd forgotten than one. Now I resisted the orange, stayed away from the purple but I did want an avacado bathroom suite. Poverty saved me from that one.

Good point. I'm Catholic, my "orange" mother liked nothing more than a orange parade. I used to ask her why as basically they wanted her children's blood but she just said it was her heritage and she loved it. No idea why she married a Catholic when Ian Paisley seemed to be her pin up.

Orange has some bad associations for me and that's not even mentioning that phase in the 60s when everything seemed to be orange, clothes, wallpaper, Tango, make up, everything, Well actually I just mentioned it!

OP, why don’t you start your own jazz band and you can call it whatever you like 😊

Boomer55 · 03/08/2024 16:57

Elvis sung about Dixieland, as did Joan Baez - 1970’s. I don’t remember anyone getting offended.🙄

It was mad but I can't work out if the orange outrage came before or after the purple outrage. They were strange days back then.

There is a chain of chicken shops in London called Dixie Chicken. Perhaps you would like to contact them and TELL them to change their name. You bring a whole new level to recreational indignation. HTH.

There is a chain of supermarkets in the southeastern US called Winn-Dixie. They have hundreds of stores. Maybe someone should be writing to them?

Millions of Americans also have no problem with Donald Trump as their president. Doesn't mean we have to agree.

No, but it does mean you have to tolerate them and they have to tolerate you and you can't have everything your own way.

This urge to censor, silence and edit the things (and people) one doesn't like really bloody stinks.

Yep

I love the phrase "recreational indignation"! Thanks, I’ll be using it.

StormingNorman · 03/08/2024 16:01

I had no idea the word was racist. I always thought it was a reference to the southern states of America. I hadn’t heard about the band changing their name either though.
