To think she's gearing up to cancel?

Last year the mum of my DC's friend kindly offered for her to join them on a mini break they had planned this year. I paid for her share of the accommodation and food (around £300)

Getting together has been a bit more tricky since they started (different) schools but we generally met up once a month or so.

So, they are due to go on on this mini break on Monday and I haven't heard back from mum. I text last weekend suggesting we meet up for lunch/an activity and asked for confirmation RE what time they'd be leaving to get to the destination etc and I haven't heard anything back at all.

She has been active on social media. I don't want to pester her but I'm getting a bit concerned that there's a cancellation coming. Surely there would be some contact by now if it was going ahead?

Glad she had a great time

RawBloomers · 10/08/2024 23:08

Sounds fantastic! So glad she had a good time. Thank you for updating us.

JMSA · 10/08/2024 22:39

Just read the update, OP, and I'm so pleased!

Stop blaming your adhd. My boys and dh have adhd so I understand how it can affect you but you seem to be leaning on that as an excuse. You cannot send your child away with this woman whether she cancels or not. My youngest is your child’s age, the Mind boggles.

Says who? Some weird random on Mumsnet?

JMSA · 10/08/2024 22:26

countrysidelife2024 · 03/08/2024 10:10

what on earth are you thinking sending a child that young away??? And to be honest i am shocked they even asked.

Oh fuck off with your judgement and give the OP a break.
You and all the others.

MooonDreamerz · 10/08/2024 22:15

My first thought was being shocked about a 5 year old going away with another family but glad it worked out for you.

She's home and she had the best time 🙂

A really fun filled and action packed week! Swimming in the sea, arcades, go karts, shows, rides, water slides, mini golf, discos, prizes, lots of dancing and meeting the Skyline gang (which she loved!), PJ masks and so forth.

I'm actually sat going through all of the photos with her now, I'm going to print them for her and make a little memory book. My friend kept me updated lots which was lovely. She's fab.

I'm really glad she got to go, I don't think she wanted to come home to be honest 😂

That's proper cheered me up, that has!

I have thought about this thread a few times and how nasty some posters were - as if it's something to be proud of to have raised a 5 year old who would have a breakdown if they were away from their mom at the seaside with a family friend.....

Of course some children are shyer than others, and of course some children wouldn't like it, and that's fair enough, but it's hardly a badge of honour.....

OP, clearly you are raising a secure, confident, happy little girl, and you (and your awesome friend) have facilitated her having an awesome time away, and that's brilliant all round!

orangetree1999 · 10/08/2024 21:49

Nice update. I think you were given a really hard time on this thread.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/08/2024 21:13

glad that it went well & she had a great time

greenwoodentablelegs · 10/08/2024 21:12

Ah lovely ! Well done !

SecretWitch · 10/08/2024 20:49

That is such fab news @SunflowerMabel !!! Love she got to enjoy a fun week with her friend and their family ❤️❤️❤️

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 10/08/2024 20:47

@SunflowerMabel I've read a lot of this thread. I don't actually think there's any real issue with your DD going away with her friends family. She is very young, but it sounds like this has been a built up relationship with this family over the last couple of years. So you've had lots of play dates etc, then this has moved on to days out etc. Your DD will be fine, you'll miss each other and I think it'll be tough on you both but at the same time, she'll be having a ball with her friend. I'm sure she can video call you at bed time etc.

I think you're getting quite a hard time, and most of it is not actually what you put the post up about.

I hate phone calls, to the point I will make any other kind of contact rather than pick up the phone. It makes me really anxious. Just a breezy text say hi friends mum, just a quick text to see what the arrangements are for Monday.

From what you've said about the mum, I doubt she is cancelling on you.

pictoosh · 10/08/2024 20:41

Great update. Of course she had a lovely time.

Errors · 10/08/2024 20:05

I’ve just read the OP posts and was really pleased to see your update!
I cannot BELIEVE the shit you were getting for this OP!

I have read about this a lot, so many parents massively over-protect their kids in the real world and under protect them online and it’s causing huge issues in young people. It’s good for little ones to be occasionally pushed outside of their comfort zone. My 6 year old daughter went camping this year with an organised group and she absolutely loved it! A few nights away, sleeping in a tent with her mates and I was happy for her to go. She was sad to come home!

Well done you for letting her have this experience

TheSecretIsland · 10/08/2024 19:53

This is such a wonderful update.

So pleased for you both. Parenting isn't text book.

JanefromLondon1 · 10/08/2024 19:47

That's a lovely update. She'll really have grown in independence being away from you and enjoying one in one time with her little friend. She'll have built wonderful memories that she can look back on for years to come and it would have cemented their relationship.

When our kids go away it's for the adventure and experience for them not about us. If it means we get a little break from the hectic life of being a parent to x amount of kids that's a plus. Also good to spend quality time with the kids/kid left at home too.

I always send mine off on holidays with friends and have taken many kids abroad for the odd week on holiday. DC has just got back from a week sailing around the med on a friend's yacht. She's a bit older but not teenager yet and had the time of her life. Often kids have wonderful experiences with their friends and it really helps build independence.

Take no notice of the naysayers and have a glass of wine.

TealPoet · 10/08/2024 19:27

That’s such a lovely update :) I’m so glad she had a great time, and even more glad that your friend has proved golden - she sounds brilliant and hopefully this will only make the bond stronger between you and her as well as the girls.

SpringYay · 10/08/2024 19:22

I'm glad she enjoyed herself. You know your kid and the other parent, so made your decision based on that.
People on this thread have been quite ridiculous and very judgemental about you as a parent.
They need to "give their heads a wobble" then do one.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 10/08/2024 19:17

Brilliant !!!

I am so glad you didn't get cold feet and let yourself be talked out of it, and other Mum never was going to cancel.

What a lovely busy time your daughter had !

Yay! I’m so glad she had a great time! Ours did too - we’re shattered and laden down with more tat than any family should ever have but it was a fab time! Did you have a nice few days?
