to think these people in Sunderland are not "protesting".

They are not protestors. They are not protesting. They are common or garden thugs and criminals who are causing criminal damage, setting police offices on fire and attacking police officers.

Total scumbags.

The police in Liverpool said they were.

I don't think the kind of people that burn down libraries, go to libraries.

I remember when the Sikh Temple was first opened, just off the top of Westgate Hill / Big Lamp. It had paint thrown and the windows smashed - late 80s.

There was me thinking times were better, now.

They've got one next to the butchers at Ashburton Village, too.

Initial turn out at Albert Park in Middlesbrough was getting in for 1000. That's a lot more than a dozen.“

Fair enough. Population of Middlesbrough is upwards of 150,000 🤷‍♀️

how many areas need to have riots before you feel worried? The number being reported won’t be all of them and even the reported number is very high.

It’s not the number of areas that matter but the number of “protestors”.
Very few, in all of these places. Couple of hundred at most. Couple of dozen in some places. In Blackpool for example, near to our town, there were a few dozen. Who were quickly seen off by many more (older and wiser) people attending a punk rock festival in town 😁

I have never been to Fenham, but there an amazing Bakery there ( seen on Instagram) which I would like to visit. I like food.
I will admit I thought Benwell and Elswick were deprived.
But my area deprived then two minutes walk away completely different!
On Facebook, The fire station has music on and people look like they are having a great time. It looked such a great addition to the city.

FAB bakery is well worth a visit but get there quite early because they sell out quickly.

Benwell, Elswick and Scotswood are tricky areas. They've historically been pretty deprived and when I was a kid were known for being quite rough for want of a better word and they had the riots there in the early 90s I think it was. Yet I had friends who lived there and their families liked the area and said it had a nice community feel.

Benwell and Elswick have still got a reputation and have became much more diverse since then - used to have a large Asian community and still does alongside people from Libya, Eastern Europeans etc. I hadn't been there for years then had to work in a school in benwell for a few weeks and also joined a baby group also in benwell and actually the area seems to have a lovely vibe to it now. I'm happy to be corrected, as I'm just basing it on a few visits, but it seems much more similar to Fenham now but without the wealthy areas.

Disagree. Thousands of people are involved in violent disorder in several towns and cities. Police are unable to keep control of the streets. This is terrible and would always be newsworthy whatever else is going on. It's unprecedented as previous large scale rioting was due to black people being killed but now it's the opposite.

Bollocks, these facist riots have nothing to do with the deaths of those poor children, and using their deaths in this way in disgusting.
It's disrespectful to the children, their memories, their families and friends to use them in this way.

Fenham has got a lot of affluent people there, as well as deprived areas. It also has two mosques, in the area, one off the West Road, in Benwell, just across from the General Hospital.

They are likely to be targetting those.

It won't be well received if they do. I live in Fenham and it's a really diverse area with an excellent community feel. It's one of the things that makes Fenham such a great place to live and the mosque is very well integrated into the local community. When people say multiculturalism isn't working, I often think they must be seeing something very different to me - we have churches (including polish and. Greek Orthodox), mosques, a Hindu temple and a gurdwara all within a couple of miles of each other and it all works perfectly fine.

Nothing is happening to your country. A minuscule minority of useful idiots is being manipulated by Farage and his ilk (who ought to be charged). Were it not the summer and slow UK news wise this wouldn’t be receiving so much attention from the 24 hour news channels that we now have, all desperate for content.
Most sensible UK citizens see it for what it is, a storm in a teacup, akin to the BNP nonsense of the past.
It’s telling that where these yobs have been met by counter-protest, the counter protesters far outnumber the dickheads.

It's interesting that another hotel in Tamworth was targeted not long after the Rotherham one but it's only filtered into the news in the last couple of hours. I'm wondering just how many areas have had disorder and to what degree....

AlviarinAesSedai · 04/08/2024 20:45

Why Fenham? It’s Fenham/Benwell a deprived . Well not as well off as Jesmond/Gosforth. Heaton is definitely up and coming if the cafe culture is anything to go by?

This is insane - so to summarise, he thinks - the riots in the UK are an Israeli plot against Muslims, it's 'zionist' subversion (where have Jews heard that one before? 🤔) and in response there should be 'elimination of Zionism' and we should 'punish the State of Israel directly, through kinetic warfare'

What the hell?

This is so depressing.

The far right organise violence. And the far left use it to vilify Jews.

🤦‍♀️

SinnerBoy · 04/08/2024 20:26

Itis a dreadful situation and I don't blame anyone for being scared (although I'm very sad that they are) but in reality, the riots are confined to certain areas which have been chosen as targets by the Right as the best places to foment hate.

It's true that they're confined to relatively small areas, but these thugs come from somewhere and go back. They cause bother on their journeys, too, as well as going to city centre pubs before and afterwards.

In the mood for trouble, they're likely to target people in town centres, or nearby, trying to get home. There was footage of a young Indian man being punched, on one news site.

SinnerBoy · 04/08/2024 20:22

I used to live on Stanton Street. Brighton Grove has improved a bit - there's a great Persian cafe at the end near the West Road.

PickAChew · 04/08/2024 19:58

SinnerBoy · 04/08/2024 18:52

It may be best to avoid Newcastle city centre at the weekend. It's only a 20 minute walk from Fenham, where the riots are planned and to be honest, there's plenty of form for pissed idiots smashing up the town.

There was violent disorder, with more than a dozen jailed, over lockdown; that was at the Monument. Skinheads throwing beer cans at the Police etc.

I was on the bus through Fenham with DS1 on Friday and it was buzzing with people out and about, doing their shopping. A lot more shops along Brighton Grove which was cleaner and a lot less run down than I remember from my student days in the late 80s. I felt quite a pang that they could so easily be targeted.

Uricon2 · 04/08/2024 19:57
  • "punish the State of Israel directly, through kinetic warfare;"

For absence of doubt, he is calling for the bombing of Israel. That is what "kinetic warfare" means today.

I think very few states with the exception of Iran think this is a good idea or would lead to the alleviation of the terrible suffering of the people of Gaza.

@absquatulize “unaffected” is an interesting word. As a woman of colour I’m pretty terrified. I asked my sister today if it was just me. She said no, it’s definitely the most scary it’s ever been for us. She doesn’t do social media and couldn’t make sense of my sleeper cell theory but is also terrified. And incredibly depressed. I think we all knew this was coming but I’m not sure that makes it any better.

You make a very good point. I could have been clearer. Unaffected as in not witness to the rioting and disorder. But there is without doubt a more widespread rise in racism, which should be called out for what it is by all of us.
You and your sister have my sympathy. Please know there are many good people out there.
