to think these people in Sunderland are not "protesting".

They are not protestors. They are not protesting. They are common or garden thugs and criminals who are causing criminal damage, setting police offices on fire and attacking police officers.

Total scumbags.

The news coverage is being very carefully curated, I assume to minimise potential social contagion. Deprive the arseholes of oxygen / exposure. Which could go either way - either they'll get bored or they'll double down. Given that the police and judicial systems are underfunded, undermanned etc they have to get it under control somehow because the knock on effects are going to cost alot if money, not to mention the emotional cost and community disruption.

It's a bloody tragic mess. I feel for the locals. If I wasn't on the South coast I'd bring a broom.

Agreed, it's very sensible.

I just wish they had been so sensible when it came to how much air time Reform /farage got during the election.

SallyWD · 02/08/2024 23:19

I'm so upset and angry about it that I want to do something, like the counter protesters in Liverpool. Form a protective ring around a mosque or something. I want to counteract the evil.
It's visibly male violence. It would be nice if women could unite and rise up against it. Sadly from what I've seen on social media there are plenty of women who agree with them wholeheartedly.

I'm shocked to see a list of towns/cities released where the next 'protests' are taking place

None are any of our local towns thankfully! If you are on this list pls take care!

Where have you seen that? I hope our local town isn't on it either! 😬

plhkldsytrd · 02/08/2024 23:19

What are they protesting exactly?

CassieMaddox · 02/08/2024 23:18

Summerflames · 02/08/2024 23:03

They've been in Liverpool tonight as well. Loads more riots planned for tomorrow, one in my home town so I'll be staying indoors.

I am considering counter protesting in my closest city (Bristol)
Not in my name. "British" to me is tolerant, welcoming, using our relative privilege to support others who are less fortunate. Any race, any religion is welcome here, we have been "multicultural" for as long as we've been a nation. I want my country back. Far right racists can fuck right off.

"Outside instigators" my arse. They are trying to evade police, that's all.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 02/08/2024 23:17

The concept of "agents provocateurs" is not a new thing and not implausible.

spikeandbuffy · 02/08/2024 23:17

The car that's been turned over is just a woman who went to get food
She's posted on FB worried about how she's going to get to work

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 23:17

wayfairer · 02/08/2024 23:14

Maybe because their outside instigators? Coached in to start a riot so we can all be told new draconian laws and facial recognition cameras are being bought in for our safety and benefit?! Maybe

Who are the "outside instigators"?

Marseillaise · 02/08/2024 23:16

Farage bears a lot of responsibility for this. He's an utter disgrace.

Whitegrenache · 02/08/2024 23:16

I'm originally from Sunderland now l live in Durham and I am appalled by these thugs.
Those who are wearing a Sunderland football top are not true fans of the club either. I apologise on their behalf

Marseillaise · 02/08/2024 23:16

Give the Just Stop Oil protesters got 5 years for non-violent protests, I hope this lot are lined up for at least 10 years.

the last government already made this lawful.

I live fairly close to Hartlepool, not close enough to have been affected directly thankfully though.

These idiots don't give a shit about those children, their families or those injured and still getting treatment, it's just an excuse to kick off, cause trouble and confront the police to be the big man.

Police need water cannons and rubber bullets and give people 5 minutes to clear off or they get soaked, hit by rubber bullets and then nicked, charged and remand until a court hearing - and while on remand they can bloody well clean up the mess they've made!

I'd also like to hear about why people think the OP is unreasonable, but it's probably people who are contrary for the sake of it because they've got nothing better going on - a bit like the thugs themselves really.

Of course they don't care - they just want to smash the place up.

Make violence again

cassgate · 02/08/2024 22:40

Anyone wonder why they have their faces covered. If they are so concerned and believe in what they are doing then stand up and be counted and uncover the face. Cowards just out for a fight and using what’s happened ad an excuse.

GCAcademic · 02/08/2024 23:12

All I can think when looking at these thick yobs is that, if they are representative of the native population (as they clearly believe themselves to be), then Britain desperately needs more immigration.

ComealongMartha · 02/08/2024 23:11

Daily Mail skanks. I bet they don’t even know what they are supposedly protesting about.

Livelovebehappy · 02/08/2024 23:11

They don’t speak for those of us who want serious discussions about immigration. Violence on this scale achieves nothing but hate and division. How worried the families of the police must be when they leave for work in these areas, knowing what they are being subjected to. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

EasterIssland · 02/08/2024 23:10

BIossomtoes · 02/08/2024 22:50

Of course they should. If only we had prison places to accommodate them.

Bibby Stockholm will be emptied soon. They can rotten in there all of them.

Cocaine and alcohol are quite the potent mix. Add in the heat, long nights, the history of riots through the ages (I'm waiting for a knowledgeable Mnetter to discuss the 1780 Gordon Riots) and rioting on any pretext is to be expected, even in the UK. With a side-order of looting.

Personally for this rabble I would put 6 of them in a cell and to hell with human rights or utilise some mediaeval dungeons - I was in one today, it was lovely and cool in the heat, perhaps it would cool some of these hotheads down

MissingMoominMamma · 02/08/2024 23:07

Using the violent murders of three children to justify their thuggery.

I hope they are jailed for a very long time.
