To dismiss a guy pursuing me, because he likes metal music?

A nice guy is pursuing me. I don't know him much yet, but he is nice so far.

Something that is making me have 2nd thoughts though... Is that he loves metal music.

I frigging hate metal music.

I like pop, rock, reggae, soul, house, disco, grunge, classical.... Anything but metal. I cant bear to listen to even 30 seconds of metal. To me, it sounds totally demonic. I cannot comprehend why someone would want to listen to that.

I spend a large portion of every day with music playing.

This guy says he listens to metal 80% of the time.

I'd love to meet someone who I can really vibe and dance with, and just enjoy listening to the same music together.

AIBU to dismiss a guy for his music tastes? Even if he is a nice guy, respectful, handsome, very sporty/muscly...?

Nope yanbu.

Would drive me insane listening to music I detest.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2024 20:38

Husband of 33 years (together 35) listens to all sorts of weird stuff. On his headphones 🤣

PurpleBugz · 02/08/2024 20:38

You can end things for any reason you want.

Personally it would depend if they were happy to not play it in the house/room I'm in or not play it much.

I don't think it's "weird" or anything to dismiss someone because of their music tastes, though you may be missing out on everything else they have to offer!
My DH and my music tastes are completely different, it hasn't affected us at all. Maybe ask him what his favourite song is to show an interest, listen to it, and if you really can't be around that kinda music then call it quits lol. But you might like it 😆

He keeps sending me songs and I hate them all

When you say "metal" what sort of bands do you mean? I would have said that if you like rock music then heavy metal isn't too far away from that. But if it's more like thrash or death metal then maybe I can see your point.

Yeah like I don't mind a bit of bands like Tool.

But I'm talking really horrible, screaming demonic voices.
I just can't.

My partner is into metal. I am not. I'm into fashion. He is not (and it showed 😂). At first I let those things really affect my feelings towards him and I told myself that made us incompatible. Until my friends gave me a virtual slap and now down the line I'm with the most wonderful, kind, caring, lovely man I've ever met who has treated me the best I've ever been treated ☺️.
He's got his pals to go to those gigs with.

Oh gosh. Okay. Don't know what to think.

If it bugs you now and music is a big part of your life, then it will be an issue.

Music is really important to me and I have it on all the time at home so I could not be with someone who wanted to listen to metal all the time.

Also I call James headphones because they give me a headache.

I wouldn't start a relationship with someone who only like metal because it would not last.

This is how I feel. I feel like sometimes it's really how I bond romantically with people. Ive dated people before who only like 1 genre (which I do like) and it's just driven me so crazy only listening to 1 genre all the time. For some reason this is so important to me!

Sorry I don't understand what you mean about James and headphones, haha

Dh likes no music whatsoever. It doesn’t stop me listening to stuff.

I don't think it's demonic. I just think it sounds demonic

What does demonic sound like? It’s just an odd word to choose.

Tisfortired · 02/08/2024 20:31

DH is a metal lover. Everyone always says ‘you wouldn’t know it to look at him’ 😂 we have very different music tastes but some bands we both like and go to see live etc.

If there’s a heavy metal gig he wants to go to he’ll often go alone, or with his other metal friend. He listens to his music on his headphones whilst washing up, walking the dog or on his work break.

Never been an issue for us, we’ve been together 15 years.

How many other prospects do you have ?

🤣
Erm. I do get a few offers, like.

My bill is an absolute heavy metal nut, drives my sister insane at times but he is truly one of the nicest people you could meet a really gentle kind person. He says heavy metal helps him relax, don’t get it myself as it makes my ears bleed.

Don’t write the guy off just yet, I’m
sure you’ll find a way round things if he’s the right one for you.

I doubt Mr Metal man will want you when you describe his taste in music as demonic. 🤣🤣
Fwiw, most metal fans and musicians are the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Thinking any music is ‘demonic’ is a bit weird.
I do think musical compatibility can be important though.

I don't think it's demonic. I just think it sounds demonic

Woahtherehoney · 02/08/2024 20:26

Music compatibility can be important but isn’t the be all and end all. Me and my ex had the exact same taste in music, but he was a knob. Me and my now fiancé have totally different music tastes and yet he’s the love of my life.

just give the guy a chance.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 02/08/2024 20:26

Very much depends, it suggest a different tolerance to noise I think.

DH is really noisy, drives me mad. Has headphones in when he’s walking the dog, tv on far too loud and mad wailing from his study all the time. Madly irritating.

Sitdownrosa · 02/08/2024 20:25

My dh loves metal, i don't. He's the best person I've ever met - kind, generous, caring, patient, empathetic, a fab listener, does way more than me around the house, amazing with our kids, works hard - good job i didn't discount him on the basis of different taste in music!
