Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

No. Joe Biden selected Harris as his running mate. The ticket of Biden/Harris was elected with more 81 million votes. A vote is cast for the ticket, not just president.

Exactly, and to add, the vote is cast with the full understanding the the vice president is next in line to the presidency.

Harris was ELECTED as Attorney General in the most populous state in the country, was ELECTED to the US Senate and ELECTED as Vice-President to Biden. Maybe people don't under that none of those positions are appointed; they are elected. Another point that may not be understood: the United States has over 42 MILLION people who identity as "black," which is over 12% of the population. Approximately 71% identifies as "white."

That is interesting I thought the vice president was chosen by the person running for president, rather than specifically voted for as vice president Is that wrong?

I don't have to justify my opinion to some random on the Internet, or anyone else for that matter. I don't care if you agree with me, and I don't get worked up when someone doesn't share my opinion.

Edited

But you do get worked up. You referred to someone who supports KH above as a ‘twat’. Your word, not mine. Or was that just a little joke?

To answer the OP's question, I'm obsessed with the presidential race since Joe Biden stepped down. I've probably read every article about Kamala in the New York Times and the Guardian, and signed up to a bunch of new podcasts as well. After a while I realised I was probably in a left-wing bubble, so I've deliberately been reading right-wing critiques of her, and trying to find right-wing podcasts as well.

The only right-wing podcast I can really stand to listen to is Megyn Kelly's. She's the ex-Fox News presenter about whom Trump said "She had blood coming out of her wherever." She uses her previous combative relationship with Trump to prove JD Vance could be be sincere when he transformed his opinion of Trump - because she has as well.

She has long-form interviews with conservatives who do make good points, and I'm glad I'm listening to the other side. But not the most famous nutcases like Hannity.

Can Kamala's wave of popularity carry her beyond the Republicans' in-built electoral college advantage?

You'll do better looking for serious conservative political commentary with youtube and other types of podcasts, in my experience. I like Glen Loury, and Coleman Hughes to some extent, he's very accessible in any case. I'd also keep an eye on Triggernormatry, they have some interesting people on though it's less US focused. Unheard can have some interesting written analysis.

It seems like news stations political analysis is just really bad these days, all sound bite based.

If you are willing to try podcasts maybe Tom Woods, Tim Poole. Some of Jordan Peterson's interviews are quite interesting though you really have to sift through them.

If you want to read, Andrew Sullivan might be a good choice, he's not a conservative's conservative, but he gives a good sense I think of smart conservative's perspectives and concerns.

What ethnicity is she claiming to be today?

For the hard of thinking out there.

What ethnicity is she claiming to be today?

Kamala Harris had an Indian born mother, and a Black Jamaican father, so she is a mix of the two and can legitimately claim both.

What race do you believe she is trying to claim that she is not part of?

What are you talking about?
She went to a black university, joined a black sorority, has talked about being mixed race/biracial.

I don't get worked up...

Again... 🤣🤣🤣

You were the one who went sweary-mouth first and had a strop coz someone mentioned Trump - in a thread about Harris's chances against, erm.. Trump! 🤣

FlipFlops4Me · 03/08/2024 17:22

Why are people banging on relentlessly about Trump when this thread is ostensibly about Kamala Harris?

Yes sorry fair point, I was just responding to someone else, because I don’t see it as good to let fake news lie (literally)

Then he addresses how disinfectant can so easily kill it, and muses if SOMETHING LIKE THAT could be introduced into the body, possibly by injection to kill it, as something to be looked into

I mean... come on! I watched it and even Dr. Birx (with the scarf) did not know where to put herself. Who, in the name of all that is holy, would even begin to think you can drink or inject bleach?!

Trump did!

Apparently, people died who did this. Disinfectant poisonings were up 121% as a result in that month.

Pls proof who are the people who die as a result of this joke? Where? Who?

TBH whoever is as stupid as that would not stand a chance in the real world anyway. However, it is all lies and smears and yes Trump is an arsehold but even so there should be a limit of the lies and exaggerations of the Democrats. They have time to proof themselves so is they have done a great job they should be staying in power. However, some of the same and old stuff are like a broken record now.

I provided the evidence that was requested. It took 30 seconds to find it. 🤷‍♀️

Edited

No you provided evidence that he never said that, despite what the papers fooled gullible people who are more interested in hatred than facts into thinking.

  1. TRUMP NEVER ADVISED PEOPLE TO INJECT THEMSELVES WITH BLEACH - totally made up.
  2. TRUMP NEVER MENTIONED DRINKING AT ALL LET ALONE BLEACH
  3. TRUMP NEVER MENTIONED BLEACH AT ALL - totally made up

listen and see

For context, Trump was not making a public advisory speech on how to cure yourself of COVID. If you listen to the whole thing before your clip, he was commenting on the report on ongoing research by the scientists looking into it. That is what it was about. Being Trump he was suggesting things they could look into in relation to what was reported. You hear him repeatedly saying to them about testing these things as he mentions them

He was was particularly interested in the way it had been said light could kill it and asked if we could some way introduce that into the body to kill it there. as something to be looked into (by the scientists he was addressing)

Then he addresses how disinfectant can so easily kill it, and muses if SOMETHING LIKE THAT could be introduced into the body, possibly by injection to kill it, as something to be looked into (by the scientists he was addressing)

What should he have said, children don’t try this at home? Seriously?

How anyone could contort that into him advising people to drink or inject themselves with bleach (or disinfectant). But obviously people just want to suck up that self affirming kool-aid. (For clarity, that is a saying, I do not suggest you drink or otherwise insert into your body said substance)

If Trump is as awful as all the abuse suggests surely you can take him down with more honesty. I think the lies and abuse just gives his supporters momentum against the chattering classes, who embarrassingly think they know it all, but are largely as clueless as the rest of us, but fail to understand that.

DOUBLE STANDARDS?
have you heard of the world renowned Pasteur Institute in Paris? Well at a similar time they put out a report of initial research that indicated people who smoked were 80% less likely to catch COVID. Now given COVID was often a death sentence would you be more likely to

  1. on the advice of Trump (even though he never gave that advice) slam down a bottle of Zan Izal to protect yourself (by obvious death)
  2. on the report from the world renowned Pasteur institute take up smoking to give you 80% protection.
i think there are very few (I estimate zero) who would be drinking disinfectant i thought however that was very dangerous of the Pasteur Institute without real robust investigation given how addictive and dangerous smoking is and how it is very likely people might take up this protection. But not a peep from the papers.

How many people drank disinfectant in the end. Or is it entirely possible that the ordinary people were not as gullible as those sucking up the false news reports

As far as the Vice President she was right behind Biden and the cover up and attacks on people who dare point out his very obvious issues, that stinks of dishonesty, and worse still making liars out of honest people who are right, but branded fantasists. So let us not pretend it is one sided. It is actually quite sickening the influence the super rich have either giving or withholding their massive donations. It almost feels like they can buy the election.

I personally would not advise Americans who to vote for it is their choice. They will end up with people pushing their own agenda whoever wins. Some say what they think and others what people want to hear. I thought it was shocking the way Obama tried to interfere in our referendum trying to blackmail us into voting remain. Not his place and that, and the shocking arrogant insults by some that agreed with him I imagine only made people feel stronger about voting to leave.

I think that the deep racial prejudice in the US, and the huge well of mysogyny will combine to mean that no matter how much the better candidate I think she is, she stands no chance. Too many sour, bitter old white men, too many angry incels, too many fine white boys, rednecks and bastards to whom a black woman is nothing but a quick shag if she's lucky. (Edited to point out this is from their pov, not mine!!!!!)

All of whom she is worth a dozen of!

Edited

They said the same about Obama. That he had no chance and that the red necks wouldn't vote for a black man.

Also, the world is changing. New generations have different priorities and have a great deal of voter power. Don't underestimate the next gen. This is who the Harris campaign is looking to reach.

Is that the same tactic you use with your wife?

BustingBaoBun · 03/08/2024 17:09

Oh my! I didn't realise Kamala Harris had a one year relationship with someone who was old back in 1994!

Something tells me, people are desperate to dig dirt. Any dirt. Even ridiculous dirt!

Right now, as the power stands, he doesn't need obvious civil unrest. He gets to decide.

He wanted to use it during the George Floyd riots. Aides drafted the orders, but as I said before, his military personnel (Mark Milley and Mark Esper) pushed back. He won't have these people around him next time, by design. He has also expressed regret that he didn't invoke it then. I'm not convinced that under those circumstances (a lack of top level people willing or wanting to push back) they wouldn't use it.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/05/insurrection-act-trump-abuse-reforms/

I think even Trump’s wimpy sycophants won’t bend indefinitely.

Eg even though technically it appears he does have the power to withdraw from NATO, I think he would quickly be impeached (for unrelated, valid reasons) if he tried to do so. And so on.

But the bar is very, very high

How weird to try to make anything of a one-year relationship 30 years ago.

Speaking as someone who lived in SF in the 1990s: he was a lot more than 'a knackered old bald bloke', he was an inspiring and almost legendary figure, deeply dedicated to civil rights, champion of major urban projects, integration of local government and access to education.

Harris hardly owes her subsequent success to the fact she had a brief relationship with him. It's such a tired trope saying a successful woman got to the top through having sex with powerful men - is that what you're insinuating? Even if she got her first big job from him (she didn't) how exactly would you explain her being elected to be AG of California?

Clearly she gave blowjobs to the entire electorate @twodowntwotogo 😆

This is truly the trope of those too lazy or stupid to bother finding anything substantive to criticise in her record. I really like her, I'll vote for her, I've even given her money, but there are things I don't love that I could cite if I was to make an argument against her. But these right wing trolls can't be bothered with that.

I don't have a horse in this race at all-but why do people think it matters which celebrity favours which candidate?

Are people so dumb that they need to be led by celebrities (who they have zero in common with) to make a decision?

How many times has this been covered on this thread already 😂😂

Powerful celebs = social media influence

Social media influence = direct access to next generation and swing voters

The bigger the megaphone the louder the voice.

There are approximately 58.2M adult Taylor Swift fans in the US that she can influence through her social media. Beyoncé pretty much on par. Add in Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, Pink and so on. Basically a snowball effect.

This is about numbers and reach. Those who don't understand where this battle is being fought, don't understand the fight.

What Kamala Harris has done is generate enough energy to create a social movement, just like Obama did. This momentum takes off and the celebs on SM will take the ball and run with it.

Plus, she'll attract big names to events which will get people to tune in. It all feeds itself.

Question is who will sing the national anthem at her inauguration? Lady Gaga was at Biden's, Beyoncé sang at Obama's event. I'm thinking Taylor would be a fantastic choice!
