Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

According to Forbes magazine, which leans Republican, the only sense in which the US became energy independent under Pres Trump was in becoming Net Surplus. In this sense the country continued and increased its independence under Pres Biden, achieving a record in 2023.

It has been over 75 years since the US did not need to rely on imported energy. Not relying on imports is the other, stronger definition of energy independence.

Reliance on imports has continued through both the Trump and Biden years and shows no sign of stopping no matter who is elected.

Trump has been pulling a fast one. He uses the first definition of energy independence to claim that he made America independent, and the second definition to claim that Biden lost this status. Again, all laid out in the slightly rightwing, Republican leaning Forbes Business Magazine

Butchyrestingface · 07/08/2024 19:23

No, I am not excited about her chances.

The only Black person who can beat Trump is a Black MAN, imo. KH should do better than Hilary but she won't win.

Btw, I want to be wrong. Nobody has ever wanted to be wrong more than me.

The US rate of inflation is currently 2.97%, amongst the lowest in the First World and significantly lower than the long term average US inflation rate of 3.28%.

Most of the world would kill for American gas prices and these prices are controlled by international factors such as the price of oil. The president cannot control them, whatever Trump would like you to think.

Of course the President can control them by having energy independence

Inflation and gas prices are causing a lot of hardship for people. If she comes out with a plan to tackle this then I’ll listen.

This differs substantially from my memory.

Furthermore we owe all candidates the opportunity to show growth and an evolution in their thinking. I do this with Trump: sadly he gets worse, to the extent that he says anything with content at all - not much. Harris will presumably be laying out her core ideas over the next couple of weeks, particularly at the Democratic Convention. Why not wait to see what she says?

I will. If she keeps going on about threat to democracy stuff then I’ll switch off

she said as much in the primaries when she tried to run for president in her own right. She dropped out before a single vote was cast.

I’m not in the minority here. It’s my vote and I’ll use it as I see fit

If Trump doesn’t win I think he will incite a lot of violence and lives will be lost. This isn’t just gloomy thinking, it is based on Jan 6. The 2025 Project conceived by Trump’s former staffers is truly horrifying. I don’t believe for a moment he will fail to enact it.

Under Biden-Harris the US bounced back from Covid the quickest of the G7 nations. Inflation is back under control and growth is on the whole very good. Compared to Europe and especially the UK, things look great. Prices are up worldwide.

A lot of the economy is outside a president’s control, but Biden-Harris deserve credit for America’s leading economy. Trump says he would lower interest rates, but that is not in the president’s gift, only the Federal Reserve Board has that power. He doesn’t have any other ideas he is willing to share.

Where are you getting the idea that Harris would provide free health care to irregular immigrants? Or open the borders? Or prioritise irregular immigrants?

Why would the economy collapse?

Sources please

She is absolutely dreadful. 100% fake. Hope she doesn't win, total pain in the neck.

100% better than Trump.

I will shed tears of joy (and relief) if she wins but I'm really nervous. Trump is clearly completely inappropriate for the job but racism and misogyny is rife in the US. Are people willing to have a female bi-racial president? Of course she should win but there are a lot of stupid people out there. Brexit really taught me that.

I agree with every word of this post

Well said, she's hideous & it will be the end of 🇺🇸 if she gets in. Harris has been the border czar & has allowed 15m illegals to arrive. Mass open borders will be a given, free healthcare for all illegals, illegals prioritised over American citizens, the economy will collapse, she makes Biden look competent. She's a DEI hire, the dems would have got rid of her if they was allowed. 🇺🇸 will be a 3rd world country under Harris & Walz. Harris & Walz are a disastrous pairing.

This just sounds like a direct quote from some right wing social media site backed up by no facts. It’s only a disaster for Trump supporters because they know Harris/Walz are now a shoe in

My concerns are a healthy economy and a safe country and I think Trump has the edge over Kamala on these issues

I was referring to the overthrowing of democracy. I don’t see how he could do it so it’s not really a concern

Who? A juror who did not believe Trump was guilty could refuse to say he was guilty. It’s simple.

Maggiethecat · 07/08/2024 17:17

Seriously, are there really Americans who wish to go back to the divisive, hateful leadership that he offers?

The self serving narcissist and charlatan who unabashedly sought mileage from the assassination attempt to declare that “he took a bullet for democracy”

Who votes for someone like that?

poetryandwine · 07/08/2024 16:55

So @Molly70 what about those one sided threats to overthrow democracy?

poetryandwine · 07/08/2024 16:53

Molly70 · 07/08/2024 16:51

This is false. Several jurors were independents and at least one said he got his news from Truth Social, or whatever Trump’s network is called. The vote to convict was unanimous

Please address the more important issue that Trump is blatantly threatening to do everything he can to get the upcoming election overturned if he doesn’t like result

I don’t really see what he could do about it

poetryandwine · 07/08/2024 16:50

Molly70 · 07/08/2024 16:17

Many people see his conviction as the Biden admin weaponizing the justice system to take out a political opponent. There is a school of thought that these convictions will encourage black males to his side as they feel they have been the victim of an unbiased judiciary as well

This is also incorrect. The felony conviction was in the NY state system. The federal justice system is completely separate. The Governor of New York is the highest relevant authority.

BustingBaoBun · 07/08/2024 16:48

I'm not sure being 'a total pain in the neck' is a relevant criticism... I find a lot of MPs and others in power a pain in the neck, but if they are the right person for the job, I put it down to my own personal unwarranted dislikes that really dont mean very much.
