Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

Go right ahead and believe that if you want, but it's self-deception of the highest order.

I’m not going to cast my vote on such an unlikely scenario happening. Personally, I think there are more pressing concerns.

A small segment. Congress is very unlikely to do this as they don’t want the political fall out.

If this election focused on merit, Harris wouldn’t qualify to be a candidate. And neither would Trump to be fair. She isn’t good at her job and her record as a prosecutor is awful.

Do you mean her time in the DAs office or her time as Attorney General of California? Could you outline what, specifically, about her record you consider awful? Thanks!

There will be no nationwide ban. The Supreme Court moved the decisions back to the individual States.

That doesn't mean they can't pass a law. What the Supreme Court said is there is no national right. Congress could pass a law banning abortion. Right now Trump says he won't. But if you believe that I have some Florida swampland for you. Three justices got up and said, under oath, that Roe was settled law and then voted to overturn it. Trump has changed his mind half a dozen times on abortion, and no matter how unpopular bans are, there's a segment of the GOP that will settle for nothing less.

Molly70 · 08/08/2024 00:13

If people don’t like their states ban on abortion then they are free to elect state politician's that are more aligned with their beliefs

All of this back and forth with Trump apologists is utterly besides the point. The race is binary: you either chose Trump and a national ban on abortion, a “fugitive uterus “ policy that tracks women’s periods and denies them the right to travel for reproductive freedom or you vote for the Democrat. That’s it. That is the choice.

I would hope the current discussion emphasizes that there are numerous issues voters have to grapple with before casting their vote.

Interesting that you should say that Famously—though you don’t seem to know it—Biden lowered gas prices and broke the OPEC stranglehold by strategically releasing oil from our strategic reserves when they threatened to restrict supply. Then when he had driven prices down he bought back and made a handy profit for the country.

You are welcome.

Also I think you would find, if you cared to actually u derstand the reality, that world wide gas prices were down under part of Trump’s reign because of COVID and decreased consumer demand. Its not because of what Trump did. Demand has risen again because the US economy has been doing well under Biden and people are returning to travel and using their cars to get to work.

The economy WAS doing well under Biden, now there are fears of a recession

A well known strategy has been to release the oil reserves when gas prices get high near election time.

Thank you for that, @Molly70

Since writing I have been searching on the question ‘How much can the US President affect gasoline prices?’ All if the oil and business authors say the answer is s ‘Not much’. The real power seems to lie with OPEC.

I'm excited about the running mate pick of Tim Walz. For the first time, I think Harris has a fighting chance against Trump, which gives me hope for the future. Trump is a fun TV boss, narcissistic, contrary, petulant, toddleresque - that's good for reality TV, but terrifying as "the leader of the free world".

But it was cheaper under Clinton than under Trump. If Trump gets credit, does Clinton?

Yes, of course

Thanks,@pikkumyy77

Still curious why you are okay with Trump shifting the goalposts on the definition of energy independence, @Molly70

The bottom line is that gas was cheaper under Trump than Biden.

Biden made her border Czar. She has given interviews about this. You can’t rewrite history because she did a crappy job

We don’t have a border czar. Its a manner of speaking. She did engage in bilateral talks with a number of counterparty countries but the actual legislation which would have affected birder security was done by bipartisan groups in the house and senate under President Biden’s leadership. The border bill which they agreed to which would have addressed the concerns you claim to have (as it was bipartisan and dealt with many right wing concerns) was publicly tanked by Trump who ordered his minions in the legislature to vote against the bill they themselves had crafted which they shamelessly did.

It was a very reasonable solution forthe richest country in the world, and the point is the elected Republican officials supported it. Trump had, and has, no role in government. It was wrong of him to exert undue influence over elected officials, and cowardly of them to bow to him

If he has that sway then he can use it. They can all put themselves forward in the primaries if they want to do things differently

poetryandwine · 07/08/2024 22:37

Molly70 · 07/08/2024 22:32

The bipartisan bill still allowed several thousand border crossings to happen before shutting down the border. Trump prefers a wait in Mexico policy and wants to reinstall that

I am in the nhs sector and I assure you its not about that , its about thugs and racists, so dont even try and justify farages comments .

Custard cream, the conservative party stripped the NHS and Social care of funding for 14yrs, Truss put the nail in the coffin with her stupid budget , conservative, s lined their own and freinds pockets while depriving the poorest for years.

@Molly70 there was a good Border Control Bill supported by Republicans and Democrats in Congress as well as Biden and Harris, all set to pass. The only person who disliked it was Trump, because it would take away one of the big things he loved to blame on the Democrats (the immigration issue). He told the Republicans in Congress to turn against it, and they did.

This is a matter of public record
