Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

How about the Supreme Court declining to halt Trump's sentencing for his conviction on felony charges?
Would you like to claim they're biased against Trump/Republicans as well?

it’s probably due to election interference

poetryandwine · 08/08/2024 14:27

Molly70 · 08/08/2024 14:19

The overwhelming did not

But the conviction was required to be unanimous.

If the Trump supporters thought Trump was Not Guilty, all they needed to do was say so. The jury did not even discuss the case for very long - that is a sign the jurors were of one mind

Okaaaaay. We will assume that it was a totally unbiased jury then

Why don’t you look up jury selection in US. You will ding the primary source for selecting a jury pool is from voter registration lists.

I don't need to look it up, or 'ding' (?) anything thank you.

I lived and worked in the USA (including in New York) for many years, part of my work involved the court system.

However, in case you need further guidance, here is the relevant extract from
the New York State Unified Court System guidelines which as you'll see offers a list of sources for jurors:

Commissioners of jurors
How are people chosen to be called for jury service?
The New York State court system obtains each year the names of state residents who are included on certain lists-registered voters, state taxpayers, licensed drivers, recipients of public assistance benefits and recipients of state unemployment compensation.

Please clarify what exactly you are trying to argue about.
Is it that Trump was found guilty due to bias on the part of the jurors?
And they are voters in a Democrat-favouring jurisdiction where he committed his crimes?

I actually said voters didn't decide in that it wasn't a state-wide vote, but if you want to keep arguing go for it, happy to prove you wrong if I can be bothered to reply but maybe for your own sanity you could give it a rest now.

@Molly70 is notably failing to address the fact that some of the jurors who voted to convict Trump in NY supported him politically

It’s so tedious these people - when they’ve run out of rope to hang themselves they resort to the insults, in the style of their leader.

If the cap fits

Voters are the jury you muppet. That’s how you get called for jury service from your voter registration

Voters are not the jury.
Jurors are actually called via multiple sources, not just the electoral roll.
Seriously, educate yourself before throwing these false claims around. Are you incapable of posting the truth? So weird.

'you muppet'
Is that supposed to be an insult? I love muppets. You'll note that I haven't been calling you names despite the fact that almost every single one of your posts is a falsehood.

I suspect @Molly70 remembers I said this above, but I will remind others that the juror who admitted to getting his news from Truth Social (Trump’s media platform) and others who admitted to sympathy with Trump were amongst those voting to convict. The decision was unanimous

Actually no. It's one source. They use multiple sources to generate jury lists. My husband was called for jury duty before he became a citizen (once he explained,
he was excused). They do this precisely because not everyone is registered to vote. They would have got his name from property tax rolls or the drivers licence database.

and many New Yorkers register as democrats only because they want to be able to vote in the primary, which can officially decide many New York elections.

More waffle and untruths.

Trump was tried in New York as that's the jurisdiction where the alleged criminal activity took place. He did it to himself.
As has already been stated, the jury was not mostly democrats so the voting patterns in the state are irrelevant. The voters didn't convict him!

If you want to talk about bias and the law, maybe look at who Trump appointed to the Supreme Court.

When I said judiciary, I was referring to the FACT that Alvin Bragg the DA for Manhatten(who brought the charges against Trump) campaigned for his job by saying he was the best person to go after Trump. In Manhatten, people voted 87% for Biden over Trump so the jury was going to be mostly Democrats

Recent comments on women’s rights and abortion rights in the US lead me to think we can all see the pointlessness of discussing US politics with people who do not know anything about the US.

Last night’s news about the decisive anti-rioter actions taken by police and counter protesters gives me hope. This is what I hope to see in the US in this election. 30,000 at this rally, 40,000 at that? We are seeing Obama levels of public engagement with the electoral process. Multiple affinity groups means that people are able to ally with other groups on the basis of multiple identities and interests.

Miss Molly upthread said, sniffilly, “I would hope “ that people are not basically single intetest voters. Well, the silliness of judging other people’s choices that way aside both the Republicans and the Democrats run in party platforms that offer a pretty good set of choices on a wide variety of issues.

The democrats have made it clear that the overarching principle they are defending is freedom: freedom to love, to live, to be safe from attack, to learn, etc…these are not windy abstractions but actual responses to republican legislative plans at the city, state, and federal level. The reason why people are so excited is that in many states people have seen their lives shrink and their freedoms stolen day by day under relentless rightist/theocratic attack. We actually know very well what the fight is. We have been fighting it for decades.

Voters and punters may be temporarily excited by the Dems and people with the attention span of mayflies may not stick to it—but we only have to hold the coalition against Trump together for 90+ days. After that we can continue to be governed capably by a democratic president and trump can spend more time with his family, or his lawyers.

the trial was carried out where he committed the crime. Maybe he should have chosen where he committed fraud in a different place 🤷‍♀️

Untrue, as another poster said.
It's very weird to just make stuff up and present it as facts.
First you claim it was a biased judiciary, then when it's pointed out that it was a jury and not judiciary, you claim the jury were democrats. Now it's pointed out that they weren't, what else are you going to make up?

There will be no nationwide ban. The Supreme Court moved the decisions back to the individual States.

There won’t if there’s a Harris presidency. God only knows what will happen if Trump’s elected, US women will have to turn their watches back 50 years.
