Plane seat drama

Just returned from a European break, booked 4 plane tickets for DH and 2 DS (19 &16) and I, eldest DS decided too old to go away with mum and dad so stayed at home. I contacted the airline as cheap non refundable ticket but said I can use it as a spare seat between DH and I so all good.

On return flight, only 2 hours long and we have seats A (me) B (spare) C (DH) and D (DS) then a couple with a baby in E & F

Couple with baby realised we were together and pretty much demanded DS moved to seat B - I politely pointed out it wasn't a random spare seat but a booked and paid for one, now I have 2 kids so appreciate it's hard to travel with a little one and would have offered the seat but they were so bloody rude and entitled. I pointed out we had paid for 4 seats and they had only paid for 2 - so asked for a contribution towards cost £30 (by this point they are just demanding the seat because they have a child)

They got pretty rude and offensive (called me a fat b**ch) so I said no, stewardess said was up to me

Should I have given them the seat?

I agree I wouldn't have asked for money as it's a bit cheeky
But I wouldn't have given up the seat either especially as they were so rude

But isn't it "a bit cheeky" of the couple to demand to be given the seat the OP had paid for, for free? If they want the seat, they should have to pay for it, why would they be entitled to if for free? Ridiculous!

It may depend on the airline, and according to the OP the airline OK’d it:

I contacted the airline as cheap non refundable ticket but said I can use it as a spare seat between DH and I so all good.

Bear in mind these days with on-line check-in and lots of folks traveling hand baggage only the no-shows might only become obvious once the aircraft doors are closed, so most occasions the airline doesn’t have the time or opportunity to reallocate empty seats.

”… a spare seat between DH and me”

lolly792 · 02/08/2024 12:51

Absolutely would not have given up my seat, so you're totally in the right there.

BUT ... 'a spare seat between DH and I' ?????!!!

It's 'between DH and me'

Im honestly not normally pedantic about grammar but this just sounds so awful that I can't let it go!

You missed out “…booked tickets for X, Y, X and I”.

Asking for money for the seat is really embarrassing.
But there's no way they should have been so rude:

Not really. OP bought it, they want it so they should buy it off OP. Why on earth would they expect someone else's paid item be given to them for free?

Apply it to any other scenario, for example:

Say I have Taylor Swift tickets booked for me a three friends and one can't go in the end. One of the other friends knows a friend of a friend who got bad tickets way at the back but would prefer to sit at the front in the good seats. Would you then expected I give that ticket away for free just because I already paid for it, my friends not going to be sat there and this random stranger wants a better experience but they don't want to pay for it?

Hell no, it doesn't work like that. Its cringe to demand freebies from strangers and then insult them.

JoyousPinkPeer · 07/08/2024 15:28

No. Had you not checked in for that passenger you could have reclaimed the airport tax.

Eventmrs · 07/08/2024 15:26

I'd have gone and sat in seat D and annoyed them even more 😂

CautiousLurker · 07/08/2024 15:15

itstoohotnow · 02/08/2024 14:48

Grammatically either can be used but it depends on the situation.

The easiest way to decide is to put in into a sentence without DH or DS as follows,

Me had seat A
I had seat A

Obviously you would say I had seat A so using I would be grammatically correct

Erm, no. Grammatically me and I are not interchangeable: it depends upon what/who the subject of the sentence is and how the main verb is being used. The test would more appropriately be ‘the seat next to me; the seat next to DH’ where ‘I’ does not work. You would use I if you were saying ‘DH and I sat with a seat between us’.

It’s an informal forum so it doesn’t really matter - but it’s definitely ‘between DH and me’.

And re the seat, if the airline and the air crew agreed that the empty seat was allocated to your party, even after the no-show, then obviously it was your choice how you seated everyone. Tbh, for a short-haul flight, and seeing a couple struggling with a baby, I’d have been inclined to free the seat up - but maybe not if they were abusive before I had the chance to do so.

misskatamari · 07/08/2024 15:15

Cheeky fuckers! Not a chance if they’re gonna speak to you like that. I like to think I’d have ended it by telling them I needed the extra seat for my fat arse, seeing as I’m such a “fat bitch” but would likely have actually just felt upset and shaken by people being so horrible 😫

No u were In the right regardless of rudeness! It belonged to you and you paid for it 😆😅

The OP didnt pay for extra space. They booked a seat for a person who didnt board. It is not the OPs seat- it reverts to the airline.

That might generally be the case but somewhere in the distant past the OP stated:

”I had contacted easyJet about keeping the seat so we had more space, they agreed this was fine but we could not take 4 carry on bags only 3 and I had followed their instructions on how to let gate staff know etc”

So in this specific case the airline had approved the seat becoming a paid for “comfort” seat for use by the OP.

DearDenimEagle · 07/08/2024 15:01

No. If They want an extra seat , they should pay for an extra seat. Preferably when they book. Taking a paid for seat from another passenger is not on.

Oh god yes, it's like the unnecessary myself to sound posh. As in, perhaps you could call myself to discuss this further. This causes me actual physical pain.

Oh yes. When someone at work tells me that ‘Mr X would like to speak to yourself’, I want to poke my ears out.

What an unpleasant post.

On short haul routes BA business class is in the same seats as economy but with the middle seat blocked out so that people have a free seat between them. Having the middle seat free is definitely an advantage regardless of whether you are a “fat bitch” or not. I’d always take a bit of extra space if I could, especially if I’d paid for it like the OP.

WestminsterWanderer · 07/08/2024 14:50

If the person for whom the seat was booked then the seat reverts to the airline. They could have put someone in standby in it.

If you want a 2nd seat them some airlines allow you to specifically book this but it can be more expensive than just booking 2 seats with the 2nd in a different name (even allowing for APD). But just booking and then the person not turning up doesn't make it you seat-it makes it an empty seat on the inventory.

I think the use of phrases such as ‘dh and I’ when they are not the subject of the sentence, has been normalised. This is how people on reality TV speak and they clearly think they are being ‘proper’ with their use of language. Poor old ‘me’ has become redundant. It’s a losing battle.

Yes, it's like people who use "whom" incorrectly for emphasis, or "yourself" and "myself" instead of simply "you" and "me". You're right, it's a losing battle. Still drives me nuts, though!

ShellSeaSand · 07/08/2024 14:41

Lavenderblue11 · 07/08/2024 14:14

I would say that 'DH and I' sounds correct in this case...

It’s not. You cannot use ‘I’ as the object of the sentence. You would not say, ‘please give the book to I’ would you? You would use ‘me’.

ShellSeaSand · 07/08/2024 14:39

TheFifthTellytubby · 07/08/2024 14:31

"DH" and "I" are both objects of the sentence following the preposition "between" and therefore the object form should be used - i.e. "me". They perform the same function within the sentence, therefore swapping them around shouldn't make any difference. "Between I and DH" is every bit as incorrect as "between DH and I". The correct formulation, as explained by OP above, is "between DH and me".

Err no, but that's not what is being discussed is it?! I don't understand what you're trying to do with your comment.

I would have offered the seat - you seem rude and uncaring for someone with two kids. Have you forgotten how hard it was?

They sound rude and entitled

You are both AH in this.

Lavenderblue11 · 07/08/2024 14:23

TheFifthTellytubby · 07/08/2024 14:20

How about "between I and DH" - does that also sound right?

They were rude and entitled and I know you paid for the seat but it feels a bit greedy to ask for money for it. Either give it to them or don’t.

The asking for money part is to make the point: it's not a random seat, OP PAID FOR the seat. If you want an extra seat, you should expect to pay for it too.
