to ask why people still do not believe that Islamophobia doesn’t exist and therefore doesn’t need an official definition?

This is a question for the general public , After the recent events , where a horrific unimaginable event that has left a community and parents shattered , reeling from the loss of their babies - the first thing that a significant group did was to attack who they thought were to blame.
and it was the Muslim community.
without verification , confirmation , the hatred was palpable -it was always there.

As a muslim ; every time something like this happens, I know all of us pause and are frightened whether the perpetrators are Muslim and - when they are not - then there are no fingers pointed to whether their religion is to blame for their actions.
the entire community isn’t put to trial.
I am so sad for the senseless loss that the parents and families are going through.
My heart goes our to them,
as my friend who is a hijab wearing Muslim said earlier today -thank god he wasn’t Muslim otherwise they would have come and killed us in our sleep. It hit me to the core how much some people hate us?
I feel this is an injustice to my 70 year old mother who prays 5 times a day, loves her god and has not harmed a single person in her life , my sister who is a confidant professional woman but will not travel out of multi cultural areas for fear of being attacked.

still the government refused to put an official definition for Islamophobia?
having grown experiencing huge levels of it in the early 90/ , I feel that those that do not believe that the Muslim community are hated by other for simply being Muslim are just ignoring it or are part of the problem .
I feel sad for my children , who don’t speak the language their parents speak, only belong to this country but look visibly different and belong to a religion that is hated so much and the government can’t protect them.

Oh I see now. So there IS some sort of disproportional issue with Islamic acts of violence and terrorism. Particularly given the small numbers who live here.

I guess that's your answer OP?

That's because of the way terrorism is defined. They're only just talking about adding far right groups under the terrorist definition - so they and other groups don't appear in the stats.

Well it doesn't help that many Muslim women and their children do not integrate even now with members of their community

DC not allowed to parties with their school friends they've been invited to

Muslim mothers never going on mum nights out when invited

It's really sad actually

Obviously this is not always the case but very common nevertheless

Not my experience at all. The Muslim mums always came on nights out to restaurants. Yes they didn't attend the nights at pubs where alcohol was the focus and I can't say I blame them.
The Muslim children we know have always come to parties and play dates.

What on earth are you talking about? Nobody is talking about blasphemy laws or whether or not religion is 'right'. OP is talking about mosques being burned and Muslims being attacked in the street because they are being scapegoated for crimes they have nothing to do with. Can you imagine how scary that would feel? Way to make it about you though.

SallyWD · 02/08/2024 07:51

I agree with you 100%. I'm not a Muslim but actually find the vitriol against Muslims quite frightening.
It seems hatred is being stirred up by the right wing press and on social media. I won't repeat some of the things I've read on social media but they're absolutely sickening.

maybe you should focus on all the dumb racist shits, paedophiles and rapists in your culture. why don't you do that first then I will work on the twats from the 2 billion strong community I belong to which clearly is my individual responsibility
and it doesnt matter if you don't care about my beliefs. but at the same time you have no right to spout racist lies about my beliefs.

This is a thread discussing Islam. We aren’t discussing anything else here.

I am also not holding you personally responsible. I am saying don’t be so quick to call people racists for calling out the truth.

This is from the Contest report

“Islamic terrorism represented 67% of attacks since 2018, 75% of MI5's caseload, and 64% of those in custody for terrorism-connected offences according to the 2023 CONTEST report”

Oh I see now. So there IS some sort of disproportional issue with Islamic acts of violence and terrorism. Particularly given the small numbers who live here.

pandasorous · 02/08/2024 07:47

@AdvicePleas I dont know what you expected by this thread. the sheer number of racist twats on here is making me sick. I am unfollowing before the racist shits boil my brain.

And America called itself a Christian country.

Informally yes but not in a political context. The USA Declaration of Independence doesn’t mention Christianity. Israel’s includes the words Jewish State. Do you see why people conflate Jews and Israel?

Have you confused me with another poster perhaps?

I will assume either that or you’ve wildly misunderstood my post in your haste to be outraged, or you’re very triggered for whatever reason, so not thinking, but your vitriol is unfounded, and extremely offensive.

I will explain rather than tell you take shove your assumptions up your arse.

If I moved to China for example, or UAE, I would assimilate into the way of life in those countries, I would also assume they were smart and educated enough, to already understand enough about cultural differences to know mine wouldn’t exactly align with their and I was learning about their culture, and would adhere to their norms (I refer to the topless beach post here) so wouldn’t expect them to stop their extremely busy lives to do endless lessons about my one of many cultures on some island in the middle of a freezing ocean. I have enough respect of their culture not to force mine on them, and they have enough respect for me to assume I am assimilating into theirs.

Whilst I appreciate not everyone takes the time to think things through, I can appreciate you make have misinterpreted what I was trying to explain on my previous post.

This, I hope is now clear for you.

Except ideology doesn’t have borders and people don’t vote for it.

Well, I agree that the people suffering from Islamic Theocratic dictatorships didn't vote for it, no. But in the recent GE in the UK, a few independent candidates stood on a pro-Gaza platform which in some cases strayed into antisemitism, and people did vote for it. So I think we can say that people do vote for potentially extreme positions that are inimical to the British secular way of doing politics, and that this trend may grow if we don't combat it.

pandasorous · 02/08/2024 07:45

MoobyMoo · 02/08/2024 07:40

@pandasorous It doesn’t matter what you think you believe or what you think your holy book says.

That’s all entirely irrelevant when you have extreme Muslims regularly committing terrorist attacks on the general population.

You need to turn your focus there, and stamping out extremism in your culture, rather than calling people racists for pointing out an uncomfortable truth.

I think what causes confusion is that Israel calls itself a Jewish State.

And America called itself a Christian country.

PonkyPonky · 02/08/2024 07:42

I grew up in a very rural part of the UK. I had never met a Muslim nor heard of Islam until 9/11 and then 7/7. These were in the formative years of my life and the fear lingers. The second thought is still there when I get on a tube or a bus in London. This isn’t something I can just turn off. I also can’t be supportive of a religion that treats women as second class citizens. I can’t look at the stonings in Muslim countries and think “that’s ok because god”. I don’t think Islamic culture can simply merge with ours without trouble. The two cultures are just so far apart, it was never going to be peaceful.

Tiredalwaystired · 02/08/2024 07:41

GiveMeSpanakopita · 02/08/2024 07:40

Well, quite. And in the same way, conflating extremist political and theocratic Islamism with moderate Islam is Islamophobia. One must be combatted, the other must not.

Except ideology doesn’t have borders and people don’t vote for it.

FFS. You have a problem with Israel, not Jews.

Stop conflating a country with religion. It’s like saying I have a problem with Christians in their entirely because of Wade V Roe in America.

I always find it amazing that Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab or their younger family members that do are being forced into modesty and it's disgusting.

Yet a post the other day where a woman wore a short skirt and had an older woman comment that 'this is why they get raped' and a lot of responses were saying that she expressed it wrong but she was right. We should dress more modestly to protect ourselves. We should be able to wear what we want but we clearly can't.

So we have to dress modestly so we don't get raped but not too modestly because then we're being 'controlled'.

I'm sorry OP that you feel like this. I also don't understand that when the mob thought the lad could possibly be a Muslim they were straight down the nearest mosque to start smashing windows and throwing bricks. Why when a white person commits an attack such as the lad in Plymouth why weren't people out in force putting bricks through the church windows?
People can say all they want that's it's different but it's not and the people 'protesting' didn't give a crap about the little girls attacked it was just an excuse to go and smash some windows and attack some people. Like the Asian man walking down the street past protests who had nothing to do with anything and got punched in the face. It was purely because he was Asian and for no other reason.

Polarnight · 02/08/2024 07:25

Islam is the only one that says its the last and final one though.

Jews believe the Messiah will return. Christians believe Christ will come again...hence whole new religions would start

OK... you need to do some reading about Islam.
firstly we believe in the messiah and the return of Jesus (Prophet Isa AS)
Secondly the idea is all religions have been sent by God... and each religion was for its time and had its own Prophet. for eg. Judaism was replaced by Christianity and Judaism replaced the religion before and so on. it's a progression to change rules according to the conditions of the time.
The Prophet SAWS came, he was the final Prophet. The Quran compiled all the messages before and gave guidance sufficient for the rest of time. It is more complicated than that but I don't want to write an essay.
A lot of Jews at the time of Jesus, accepted him as the Messiah (which he was).
Neither Jews nor Christians nor Muslims belive that in the final coming of the Messiah (I.e. Jesus), there will be a different religion. He will come, people of faith will follow him. Each religion believes their religion will be the one that continues after his coming.

Islamophobia is like antisemitism in that there's a line between legitimate criticism and bigotry, but people disagree where the line is.

Since 2000 in the UK there have been 97 terrorist (defined in law) murders. In 94 cases the murderers were Muslims.

Am I phobic about the kind of extreme Islamism that encourages terrorist activity? Hell yes, I'm terrified. Am I afraid or prejudiced against ordinary people who happen to be Muslim? No, they're just like me, they want quiet peaceful lives with their family and friends just like I do.

In the same way there are people who have no beef at all with Jews but strongly disagree with what Israel is doing to combat Hamas in Gaza. The latest Gazan death toll stands at 40,000 Palestinians. Are people right to be angry about that? Yes. But does that extend to denying Israel's right to be a state and protect its citizens? Well most decent people would say no, but some say yes, and that's where the line gets crossed.

So, it's complicated, is what I'm saying. Extremism is something we should all fear, but there are some few bad actors on all sides (British EDL, Israeli, Islamic) who are extreme and it's sad and frightening that us moderate people end up being whipped into a state of discord.

I think we should all try to stay moderate in our discussions on these subjects and not pander to extremism.

FFS. You have a problem with Israel, not Jews.

Sleepersausage · 02/08/2024 07:32

I don't believe any individuals or communities should be victims of hate or fear going about their daily lives, but you can't argue that any religion or culture should be free of criticism.

I heard on a podcast that the term islamaphobia was coined by the Iranian government to shut down any criticism of the hideous things they were doing. Which makes me feel it isn't really the right term to be using
