To want the kids next door to shut up now?

OK so I know that I probably am being unreasonable but I'm tired and grumpy and want some peace..

We have a big garden. On one side is another family with kids the same age as mine, we have a low fence and can see into each others gardens. The kids play with each other all day long alongside the fence, having a great time. They don't go out until 9am at the earliest and they come in 7:30pm at the latest. I make sure they don't scream or screech loudly but they do talk and laugh quite loudly. The neighbours have the same rule.

On the other side is an older couple. They're OK. We know each others names and send Christmas cards. Other than that we don't have much interaction. They've done a couple of things over the last five years which I consider quite inconsiderate but have on the whole been decent neighbours.

Tonight they must have their grandkids over because omg there are young kids out there screaming their bloody heads off and making a loud banging noise. Not sure what it is, maybe a football but it's really irritating. It's now 20:51 and no sign of them stopping.

My kids and the kids on the other side are long since in bed, the only noise is these kids next door and the neighbour hood dogs they keep setting off with their screaming.

Is it reasonable to think they need to bring them in or tell them to be quiet now? My kids are in bed and I'd like to relax with the doors open on this hot evening without listening to other kids and it's well past 8pm!

Would you be annoyed? or suck it up as a rare occurrence?

My dad sack of a neighbour has found some fucking concrete or something in the corner of the garden, he is now hammering it with a lump hammer . Fuck off to him and all the annoying neighbours. Yes I'm going down the headphones route , thanks and goodnight x

HauntedbyMagpies · 01/08/2024 23:35

@orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements My only question is why were your kids "long since in bed" at only 8:51 in the summer holidays? How boring! The biggest perk of the summer holidays is staying up late/later!

IneedAbiggerWindchime · 01/08/2024 23:27

It's a one off and before 9pm isn't even late. I'd let it go.

Ponkpinkpink15 · 01/08/2024 23:11

YABU as many have said, they probably don't want to hear your kids playing many hours, many days, they'd probably like to sit in their garden & only hear the birds chirp.

one evening listening to their GC is NOTHING in comparison.

Mop33444 · 01/08/2024 23:02

YABVU, it sounds like a family gathering. Why on earth would the children be in bed so early on a Summers evening?

leave them be most noise guidelines state 11pm to 7am in my area.

LBFseBrom · 01/08/2024 23:02

Come on, it doesn't happen all the time. It won't hurt you to put up with it for once. It's like parties, they can be very noisy, especially in good weather and they spill over into the garden but if people only have them occasionally, it's OK.

Mine (now nearly 45), the neighbours' children and sometimes others used to play in our back garden when they were small, until much later than yours in the summer; nobody seemed to object - even when they put on concerts :).

Live and let live.

Evanna13 · 01/08/2024 22:56

YABU
Your poor neighbours have to listen to your kids all day in the garden. I am sure there are plenty of times they cannot relax in their garden due to your kids shouting.
This is a one off. With their grandchildren visiting. 8pm is not late in the summer holidays. Most kids would still be up.
Yes its annoying but I think you are being incredibly selfish and you would be VERY unreasonable to complain.

Anonymous2224 · 01/08/2024 22:53

oh for goodness sake suck it up. They are reasonably good neighbours and this is by your own admission not a common occurrence. I will never understand people who moan about being unconvinced by their neighbours once in a blue moon. We have great neighbours, every once in a while they have a bit of a party that goes in to the wee hours, yes it’s a bit annoying, but hey I’m sure I’m a bit annoying at times as well! If you don’t want neighbours inconveniencing you by living their life and enjoying their home and garden once a year or so move to the middle of nowhere!

Yes, YABU.

and also, they are screaming and shouting and banging enough to raise hell and mine have limits on how loud they can be

Payback! Hopefully they are out there for the rest of the holiday

PoopedAndScooped · 01/08/2024 22:19

Your kids are loud from 9am till 7.30pm so 10 and a half hours A DAY and you have the bare arse cheek to be annoyed about one evening
🍪

Galoop · 01/08/2024 22:16

So your kids are loud everyday 10 hours and you're getting annoyed at a one off?

Upwiththelark76 · 01/08/2024 22:14

You suck it up. Like the elderly
neighbours do with your
kids . At least the noise from them is few and far between .

herecomesthesunyes · 01/08/2024 22:14

Oh dear!! If you complain then you will regret it! Just leave them to it.

ComeOnThenFanny · 01/08/2024 22:10

I think you've got a proper cheek, tbh! It's one night. Out of interest, what are the things that they have done previously that you think are inconsiderate?

Jk987 · 01/08/2024 22:08

I see it as a one off. The kids are excited to be at Granny's. Unless you live on a remote farm, there will always be odd occasions where you disturb the neighbours. She does have to put up with your kids noise every day...

xyz111 · 01/08/2024 22:01

Your neighbours have to deal with your kids from 9-7:30? I'm sure you can put up with their grandkids for one day.

Howtoeatanelephant · 01/08/2024 22:00

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 01/08/2024 21:24

Well no, not all day every day, both us and the neighbours have other things going on in our lives, the don't just play for 10 hours every day.

Just that those are the cut off times if they do play out, out of consideration.

I think noise during the day is different to noise at night.

Sorry, but it isn't. Noise, like pain, is what the individual says it is. Peoples tolerances differ

For 10 hours a day.....

Trainstrike · 01/08/2024 21:41

There's a gang of 10-12 year olds on the street outside my house who are, as usual, running around and shouting who I've just told to STFU on slightly calmer terms. I'd love it if 9pm was the latest they made noise! I do allow a bit of leeway in the holidays but some of their parents honestly don't give a shit.

otravezempezamos · 01/08/2024 21:38

20:00 is early in summer.

Anything between 22:00-08:00 would be antisocial

Blogswife · 01/08/2024 21:38

Whilst you might think that your kids are not causing a nuisance to your neighbours , (who I’m sure would love to use their garden in peace every now and then) they will be forced to listen to them over 10 hours a day , most days. It appears that not once have they asked you to give them a break and yet you are thinking of complaining on the rare occasion that their visiting grandkids make a bit of noise . You are being very unreasonable !

MyBirthdayMonth · 01/08/2024 21:37

Nobody wants to hear screeching kids, but your neighbours probably hear more from your side than you do from theirs.
