To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

No, because they don't really fit with the rest of what I wrote.

Unless wee Nicola was running a few gulags in the outer Hebrides and that's where the party funds really went?

Probably an MSP, aka the biggest waste of public money ever. Should replace them all with an IT programme: Cheaper and more effective.

Is there a reason you are in denial that the political landscape is not like for like between two different countries?

So what terminology do you use to contrast different political systems? Or is it impossible?

So the current government in Afganistán is centre left?

Op, what's your point? You seem to be trying to shut anyone down who had the (rightly so) view of the far right being white supremacist racists, mob like to their "leaders" misogynistic, yobs.

So the current government in Afganistán is centre left?

I imagine you think they are, because nuance and objectivity doesn’t exist to you - just fairly blind tribalism.

What are you talking about? I’ve had a few conversations with other posters. I haven’t said anything negative about anyone, all I said was about that switch up of wording and you’ve launched yourself at me. I don’t understand why at all.

Please point out where I have not been objective and nuanced whilst discussing my personal political homelessness?

There’s no need for aggression.

I thought the Japanese are incredibly anti-immigration, or maybe they aren’t considered to be ‘of colour’.

Japan is very insular. Very few western people had been there before 1853,. Resisting anything that destabilises the status quo, except technology, which has served them well for 150 years, until ordinary folk declined to breed and raise the next generation. It's push-back, and the voice of young generations refusing to do what politicians think is right because there is nothing to encourage them to do so, because the elderly are such a generational overhang. Italy, Spain, and France are on the verge of similar thinking.

The UK is much better at integrating new migration, even with the odd flare up. I know lots of people are convinced the Empire was all about rape and pillage and looting, but look around the Commonwealth countries and the legacy is legal systems built on 1000 years of the common law. India is the world's largest democracy. Not perfect anywhere, but better than the Spanish/Portuguese colonial history. To the point that Mozambique, never part of the British Empire, asked to join in the 21st century.

Because it surprises you somebody can be consistent and rational while disagreeing with you on some things?

No. Because "I can, yes" is not a comprehensible answer to the question "So can I infer you agree the far right are a current threat while the far left are a conceptual threat?"

For a poster that claimed they wanted a political discussion, their responses and reactions are really bizarre.

I look at this slightly differently as I compare with Aus. It has very stringent policies that we won’t go for yet but it’s Labor centre left gov

My view is that countries that can’t do similar will increasingly struggle with unrest and possibly harsher laws, unless something else changes

CassieMaddox · 01/08/2024 20:57

Elbone · 01/08/2024 20:21

What do you think “I said that it is equally horrible in terms of its affect”
means then? Explain it to me. Because to me, it’s stating the women in the uk face equally horrible oppression to the women of Saudi, then a denial of saying that followed by a rewording of it, on repeat.

She is saying you can't directly compare Saudi politics with UK politics. But the far right politics of the likes of Tommy Robinson/Andrew Tate/Laurence Fox etc would be equally horrible for UK women if it were in charge here.

That is completely different to comparing life in the UK now. You seem to be struggling with some fairly clear language tbh.

TomDaleysShavedBalls · 01/08/2024 20:53

Do you think the SNP are far right?

Do you understand politics or do you think this is a gotcha? The SNP is to the very left side of UK politics, see also Sinn Fein.

The far left and the far right politically have lots of crossover.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 01/08/2024 20:56

StripedPiggy · 01/08/2024 20:49

In some ways, that’s easier to define.

The far left are opposed to parliamentary democracy & the free market economy. They seek to have them overthrown by a popular revolution, violent if necessary, and replaced by a single party communist state & a centrally planned economy.

And you don’t hear much from them at all.

Whereas the far-right are very vocal about getting their precious Muslim Kristallnacht and will seize any opportunity to try - like they did in Southport.

Because this person isn't being genuine to many far right types pretending not yo be . Yes I also have seen disgusting rhetoric about trans people if you put jew etc in the same vain folks would be in uproar.

For a poster that claimed they wanted a political discussion, their responses and reactions are really bizarre.

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/08/2024 20:43

@RedPoster I was hoping at least one would get over their rage and read (a bit) and I was being very generalistic about Corbyn. Your user name seems very apt. It's ok, I prefer to be floater, but I'm happy to hear your suggestions.

And with regards to Hitler's Nazi (National Socialist) Party, in it's beginnings it did include the Socialists as they too were unhappy with the post-Versailles Weimar Govt. Goebbels was one of the Socialist leaders and Hitler enticed him on board for his 'talents' whilst planning to eliminate the rest.

Excellent series currently on PBS explaining just that.

To be honest, I have no idea. I have no political home at all and I don’t know if such a home will be forthcoming any time soon.

I haven’t heard about their socialist roots, but I suppose it makes sense with the political situation at the time. I guess there are several cases of left wing ideals becoming right wing style dictatorships.

How do you explain the fact that it became insidious under the Conservative government?

Because this iteration of the tories were socially liberal. Cameron brought in gay marriage!

Winederlust · 01/08/2024 20:53

Begsthequestion · 01/08/2024 20:03

It's ok if you don't understand it, I wasn't addressing you.

This is a MN thread, hence open to all to engage with everyone else, preferably in good faith even when disagreeing.
And by engage I mean actually engage in the debate, as in explain - avoiding straw men and ad hominems - why you disagree (I'm going to go out on a limb here) with the OP.

Nationalism above all else and at the expense of others. A desire to silence/remove any dissenting voices. Attributing all that is wrong in their lives with group other than themselves. Isolationist unless fitting with their broader ideology. Socially conservative.

I know you said not to mention Southport but those rioters epitomise far right for me. Thick, white, middle aged, small minded men who can't tolerate or understand anything other than their own narrow views. Hence why they also hate homosexuality and women. And why they go abroad to order full English breakfasts and pints of John smiths. To me it's pure ignorance teamed with aggression. If they don't want to learn about other ways of life, fine. But they actively try to violently abolish them.

So to be a far right individual, you need to be a white man?

TomDaleysShavedBalls · 01/08/2024 20:51

I think it is a legitimate question.

The way people talk about political wings these days, you hear:

Far left
Leftwing
Centrist
Far right.

In the old days, there used to be ‘rightwing’ people who were generally vilified as ‘Tory scum’, etc, by the left, but no more. It skips from ‘centrist’ straight to ‘far right these days.

Izzymoon · 01/08/2024 20:51

Rainbowsponge · 01/08/2024 20:47

Oh, hey again. Back with another deflection piece are we?

Where’s the deflection when it’s specifically addressing your post? Do
you understand that’s the opposite of deflecting?
Why are you assuming anyone thinks those things are far right? Where are you getting this?
It honestly comes across like you’re just typing for the sake of it. Your replies don’t follow any logic to the content, not do they follow on from your OP in the first place.

OneTC · 01/08/2024 20:51

Far right means far right, it's not really that ambiguous.

What you seem to be mixed up with is authoritarianism, which can obviously be any part of the political spectrum, and is generally not cool

Dymaxion · 01/08/2024 20:50

Absolutely. I’ve been called far right before just for having very valid concerns about immigration!

Net migration reached record breaking figures under 14 yrs of the Conservatives in government, so they might have sounded a lot further right than centre at times, but their track record certainly wasn't on this particular issue. Of course there are varying factors why this happened, and it wasn't people crossing the Channel in small boats, but people claiming very valid concerns never seem to pinpoint the part of the immigration figures they have an issue with ? Is it students ? , people coming from all over the world to work here ? People joining their family ? People seeking a safe refuge from war like the Ukrainians ? people seeking safe refuge from a changed political situation like Hong Kong and people who we are indebted to for their service to our troops whilst they were in Afghanistan ?

StuckintheRutt · 01/08/2024 20:50

It means exactly the same as the far left.
Dogmatic, brainwashed people who want to enforce a regime onto us and make us all miserable. Whilst they have a great time being dictators at the top, obviously historically the far left have had greater success with this idea because they think they a re morally superior wind doing it for "everyone".
