To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

We’ll see the reality of this new approach and I can’t see it not getting worse

Each summer numbers go up there will be more chaos

More suppression too

Aus has none of this. Re deterrent v other policy in post below you first decide to do something that works and think about whether that’s doing enough

We’ve voted the opposite direction and there’s no safe route utopia as i had said on earlier threads anyway

Choosing between calm happy citizens without suppression Aus style and this is an easy one, whether enough voters will ask for it I’ll see

Racist, white nationalist, white supremacist, fascist.

You know, the normal definition of far right.

Nice try though.

100% how I would describe the far right, too.

So then, would you call people concerned about over-population? About multiculturalism that isn't working in their town or city? Crimes committed by those with no documentation?
What do you call those people?

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

C.S. Lewis summing up how I feel about the modern left.

Yes. He and Orwell had them nailed.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2024 10:08

But the Aus policy had two prongs didn't it. Off shore processing & pushbacks.

Numbers of people travelling on boats actually rose when off shore processing was introduced.

Numbers of people travelling on boats fell sharply AFTER pushbacks were introduced.

Which was the deterrent?

Chart from the Times.

To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?
EasternStandard · 02/08/2024 09:59

Too late to edit

I think people were mistaken when they envisaged what scrapping a deterrent would look like, so many argued they would see ‘safe routes’ or numbers would not increase

The reality is chaotic, expensive and flaring tensions

You can have a country that has none of that and where citizens are happy with it but it’s Aus that shows how

EasternStandard · 02/08/2024 09:48

All the reactions that reactions that stem from an unaddressed issue will cost

Given the choice between Aus policy and calm v where we’re heading I’d choose Aus approach

This! 👏👏

This 100% 👆

Its a for the lazy trope for people who can't cope with the idea someone has opposing views.

EasternStandard · 02/08/2024 09:21

cupcaske123 · 02/08/2024 00:32

Political beliefs tend to be on a spectrum. You could argue that the Rwanda scheme was far right but the Conservatives weren't. So it's perfectly feasible to hold a mixture of views. However the further right you go the less moderate you'd become.

On this the policy can be used by a centre left gov and become bi partisan ie Aus Labor

It does seem an issue in the U.K. and I think we’ll go towards national riot squads, public disorder and increasing numbers and flaring tension instead.

There’s a few EU countries on a similar trajectory atm

I get that most GC women on here are left wing and feel uncomfortable ‘taking the side’ of a right wing position, but you can’t deny gender ideology is very much supported by left wing parties and not right. It’s become a left wing policy.

It is more left than right yes. If you look at the media, and countries overall

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/08/2024 08:44

It is not a question of what it means "to you" or any other random person. The term is clearly defined and understood as described in detail here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics

You can't just decide it means something else to suit your dogwhistled (claxoned) agenda.
Hope this helps.

Sorry - yes to be honest I did. I’m exhausted and very prickly. I sincerely apologise.

I’m going to get off Mumsnet and go for a walk instead!

Enjoy your walk 😊

Whereas Johnson couldn’t give a fuck about other people and he proved that repeatedly.

So I said - Let the bodies pile high. Which is something Johnson said.

Got out of the wrong side of bed?

I condemned him for it so what’s your point?

And yes, Johnson and his cronies did let the bodies pile high.

Yes as I said earlier the romanticisation of the ideologies has sometimes ended up very badly. Corbyn condemned what was happening in Venezuela but not the leaders who had caused it, which I agree was unacceptable. But I would still have rather have had him than Johnson, who thinks setting fire to money in front of homeless people is a funny joke, as I don’t ever believe that Corbyn would have wanted anything bad to happen to people. Whereas Johnson couldn’t give a fuck about other people and he proved that repeatedly.

It's been supported by the Tories for the past decade. It's in schools, organisations and the public sector.

Well he openly supported and defended dictators like Chavez and Maduro. That was alienating enough for me.

Science and biology aren’t right wing or even political. How biology and science are utilised politically is a different matter.

For example, two people might agree that only women can be pregnant.

One person might believe that that means that women are a liability in the workplace and shouldn’t be considered for serious jobs or promotions.
The other might believe that that means women should have legal protection in place to protect their careers and should not be discriminated against on the basis of them being female.

Elbone · 02/08/2024 07:24

Rainbowsponge · 02/08/2024 07:18

I disagree, I think GC span all range of political viewpoints but gender ideology is firmly left wing. I can’t think of a single right wing party that promotes it, although I can think of plenty of critics from the right/left

I would say radical feminists are left wing but GC have no alignment with either wing politically because beyond knowing men are male and women are female, they don’t have to share any other political beliefs in common.

I’m a socialist too and politically in the U.K. I don’t know where I sit anymore. Labour have become rather centrist to me.

I really like Corbyn and agree with a lot of what he stands for, Javing grown up with a lot of Marxists. anarchists, Liberalists and so on I certainly wouldn’t call him anywhere near far left.
I think the media did him utterly disgustingly by suggesting he was an antisemite but that’s for another day. I’m not sure he lost purely over fence-sitting on Brexit, they marked his number on many things, his views on peace, war and armament I think hammered the nail into his coffin for many people.

I feel like it’s easier to be right wing politically in the U.K these days, there are many more homes for you to find. Which is a bit worrying to be honest.

Well he openly supported and defended dictators like Chavez and Maduro. That was alienating enough for me.

Elbone · 02/08/2024 06:26

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 02/08/2024 05:48

yeah, this was kind of what i meant. because some issues dont sit squarely in a left/right position. so there are some very GC people on both sides who might be labelled "far right" and that seems weird to me
