To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

Seems to be the latest far right talking point. I’ve seen it all over the web lately including a lot on here. It’s to deny that the far right exists at all and go on the attack against anyone who calls out the far right fanatics. We see you. We’ve always known who the far right are, since the days of the National Front. Nice try, though.

👏

That makes no sense Confused

Because it surprises you somebody can be consistent and rational while disagreeing with you on some things?

Racist, white nationalist, white supremacist, fascist.

You know, the normal definition of far right.

Nice try though.

In the run up to the election I watched a segment on the news where they were interviewing a group of people from a town and asking them who they were going to vote for. The only person in the group who said they were thinking of voting Reform was a black man.

So that doesn't fit with your prejudiced view if Reform are considered "Far Right".

What do you think “I said that it is equally horrible in terms of its affect”
means then? Explain it to me. Because to me, it’s stating the women in the uk face equally horrible oppression to the women of Saudi, then a denial of saying that followed by a rewording of it, on repeat.

She is saying you can't compare Saudi Arabian politics with UK politics and the far rights views of women are equally abhorrent regarding women.

I can, yes.

Although that said I do have concerns about the threat of some far left ideology - gender ideology and the curtailment of free speech (such as ‘a man cannot be a woman’).

Is it possible to be far left without being Communist? My understanding of Marxism is that it is just a critique of Capitalism but doesn't offer solutions, otherwise that might be my political home.

My leanings are Socialist but Labour dropped Clause 4 and their commitment to Socialism in the 1990s to form New Labour under Smith, then Blair; Corbyn did go back to that and it resonated well hence he got more votes than Starmer but he 'blew it' with Brexit and sat on the fence, critiquing from a Marxist viewpoint hoping the Capitalists would implode - and we got Boris and 'Done Over' instead.

I'm happy that we have the current bunch in charge - didn't vote for them as a wasted vote in my constituency - but you go girls and the Starmertron too.

For far right you need to look in certain places, they are quite easy to find and even easier to avoid. Farage and Co are not far-right, CLR, but not RFR

I dont support genocide. I’ve donated huge amounts of my own money to humanitarian charities supporting Palestinians. More than you I’m willing to bet.

Course you have, that's why you think it's antisemitic not to support a humanitarian disaster.

So can I infer you agree the far right are a current threat while the far left are a conceptual threat?
Just I am a bit confused why you are bringing the far left up on a thread you started about the far right

Edited

I think you know what is far right, but I think to summit up. In some respects, it’s orthodox extremism on the ultraconservative right maybe even you could call it in America Alt-right.
The examples of people have suggested that it’s beer drinking skinhead wearin Doc. Martins are a little bit stereotypical because that is possibly what you see from. Maybe working classes, but actually the most dangerous far right are your most intelligent people like Nigel Farage, as he knows where to dog whistle and to stay on the line that, although he insights hate he does it in a very questionable way that people don’t see that he’s doing it, and if you look in the history at people like Oswald Mosley, they were the most dangerous people because they’ve got intelligence and the foot soldiers are the people that you see on the streets. We’ve just seen in Southport or London for example .
you also asked if countries like Saudi were far right. well there is a what I described as a horseshoe and I believe that Orthodox countries of Conservative extremism like certain Islamic countries. Yes could be on that wavelength, but you would then put them as separate because the far right is an ideally of nationalism of ultraconservatism to them as I say there is a crossover, but it’s mostly based against race and religion and against minorities, whereas I would suggest that the orthodox ultraconservative is a mostly social conservative issues less about race.
I sit on the left of centre, and yes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with talking about immigration, but yesterday and the day before on social media people were frothing at the mouth because they really wanted it to be a Muslim killer of children because they don’t care about the children they don’t care about anybody being killed. They only care about trying to kick a Muslim but somebody for many of them they wouldn’t see anybody born in Wales as British if they’ve got a Rwandan parent that’s the problem that is why we know they are the far right because they are racist Islamophobic and quite horrible people

You said “I said that it is equally horrible in terms of its affect”

Are you seriously saying the women of Saudi have the same level of recourse to protection as women in the uk?

Midnightalready · 01/08/2024 20:20

Uricon2 · 01/08/2024 20:05

That is not what I said. I said that it is equally horrible in terms of its affect, which it is on women, unless you think Stephen (wife assaulter) Yaxley-Lennon is a shining example of feminism.

For absence of doubt, Saudi is as horrible in its own way but the cultural bases of the Left and Right wings in Europe are different to those in Saudi and some other states.

While I think the UK does have a misogyny problem - as does every other society in the world - to assert that it's even remotely on the same scale as Saudi Arabia just beggars belief.

I agree, OP.

Thinking immigration, both legal & illegal, is far too high & supporting legally enforced caps on numbers ≠ far right.
Supporting free speech, including by people you dislike who say things you disagree with ≠ far right.
Supporting much lower levels of taxation, smaller government, benefit cuts, some level of NHS privatisation ≠ far right.

Supporting racial or religious segregation or discrimination, forced repatriation of immigrants etc etc = far right.

This and just generally rather than definitions I think we’ll see growing pressures as there isn’t the ability to deal with trafficking. Well bar Aus which has put policies in place

EU, UK and US are going to struggle with increasing public discord until politicians work out how to change it
