To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

Literally what DH and I have been saying. My mum and Dad are now rabidly racist - hate foreigners, love Farage, and blame all their ills on immigration or other countries.

Mum didn’t go out to work ever, we lived on the breadline with my self-employed trade dad being out of work as much as in work. They twice bought shops which went under and bankrupted them. Finally getting straight with no mortgage they sold their house, cashed in Dad’s pension, got 2 loans and bought an apartment in Spain. They bubble burst, negative equity, have to rent it out permanently to pay the loans.

They then voted Brexit and shot themselves in the foot even more. Now living on basic state pension/pension credit in a mobile home, and blame everything and anyone but themselves for how they’ve ended up.

Especially ‘boat people’.

The frightening thing is, there’s so many of them out there. You see it on FB, casual racism thrown into every conversation or these days outright seething racism, utterly uninformed bile pouring out of them.

You didn’t live on the breadline if your parents managed to buy two shops, pay off a mortgage and buy an apartment in Spain. You don’t even know what living on the breadline means.

Shaketherombooga · 12/08/2024 07:00

Oh and that guy with the ‘assault’ record - turns out his a convicted sex offender … young girls…
But it definitely the ‘boat’ people stopping him from being employed, not the fact that he’s a nonce.
which sounds better though, when he’s telling his sob story ?

Mmm, like the guy being interviews in the news that said that immigrants get all the jobs. And when the presenter asked him if he worked. He said he hadn’t for a few years, what with having got out of prison for assault … and when the presenter said ‘ so you think immigrants are the reason you don’t have a job rather than your criminal record - he’s says yes.

THAT for me is the epitome of the far fight, absolute thick fuckwits, casting around for people to blame their own failures on.

No, she's a self-employed designer, and expats in Saudi are expected to live in compounds. She grew up in the Middle East, and doesn't feel her life is restricted. As a household, they are reasonably well off.

I mean…you’re proving PP’s point, here 🙄

Far right means

Aggression
Abuse
Intolerance
Race Superiority
Brainwashing
Generation of extreme poverty and extreme wealth
Unable to decipher or question information or facts.

If I may, I think we may all need to prepare to row back big time on Saudi attitudes towards women. My niece in law has been living there for the last two years, and laughs at the idea that women don't have opportunities. They absolutely do, but they also have to tiptoe around the conventions.

Does your niece make loads of money and live in a gated community ? Doubt she's Saudi if she laughs at their gender apartheid.

You may not.
I’m perfectly a happy criticising a country that treat women like second class citizens.

You might be happy to “tiptoe around the conventions” but I am not.

Dictatorships, no equal voting rights, no equal pay for same work, no freedom of religion or expression, no tolerance for different people's culture etc.

I don't see far right being race related.
Any coloured person can be far right in their beliefs.

I don't see far right being connected to low immigration either.
If the majority of people vote for low immigration (and everyone has a vote) that is not far right. People can embrace and respect lower numbers of people from other places for valid reasons like environmental sustainability etc.

No I don’t think it is either, which is why I put the phrase in quotation marks. It’s perceived as right wing though, and tends to be grouped together with other right wing beliefs such as being any immigration, anti gay etc.

The extraordinary thing about there being only two sexes is not that people perceived as 'right wing' believe it.

It's that people on the left have persuaded themselves that vague feelings trump biological reality

FayeGreener · 03/08/2024 12:54

Midnightalready · 03/08/2024 12:30

Believing there's only two sexes and that no one is born into the wrong body is not right wing.

I find it very interesting that being GC is the only “right-wing” view during my lifetime that has been held by a group that would deceive themselves as left-wing (women who would describe themselves as feminists).

TheKeatingFive · 03/08/2024 09:46

I disagree, I think GC span all range of political viewpoints but gender ideology is firmly left wing.

And yet, if you dissect it, gender ideology is not classically left wing at all. It's a bizarre mashup between Left wing Utopianism, Big Pharma and intense Individualism. The latter two are much more classically right wing positions.

I don't find the Right/Left terminology helpful any more. It's not reflecting the political opinions on the ground.

EasternStandard · 03/08/2024 09:13

The U.K. and Aus will diverge due to policy. We’ll have more unrest and violence and they will use borders and never vote that out

They are not a far right country, they are centre left. Our inability to vote in similar policies is going to cost us hugely

Five years of this, we’ll be a mess and likely with suppression too

It’s a very interesting question and one that deserves to be properly debated. Unfortunately, the thread is unreadable due to the foul mouthed ranting from what is obviously one person posting under several different names. I hope it’s one person anyway, because if this is groupthink, this country is such big trouble.

Gender ideology was spread, promoted and funded in the UK by the last Tory government.

Gender critical does not span a range of political viewpoints. It is very a very specific leftwing, feminist ideology.

Edited

Gender ideology is underpinned by the GRA 2004

Which was Labour

Rainbowsponge · 02/08/2024 07:18

I disagree, I think GC span all range of political viewpoints but gender ideology is firmly left wing. I can’t think of a single right wing party that promotes it, although I can think of plenty of critics from the right/left

Yes.

Are you aware of the GC movement? They're very left wing.

As an active member for over a decade, yes, I am aware, thanks. My point was the label of “far-right” has been hurled at us repeatedly. Are you ok?

CappuccinoChocolate · 02/08/2024 10:46

Peak whataboutery thread

Winederlust · 02/08/2024 10:41

I genuinely think most of the kind of people PP are describing on this thread aren't 'far right'. Sure, they've bought into some of the far right talking points because they feel disenfranchised and forgotten and want someone to blame. And influential characters who could be described as far right give that to them.

The majority of these folk would be as horrified as the rest of us if a genuine far right party came to power. Maybe not right away, but eventually it will hit them. By which point it will be too late.

The answer therefore isn't just labeling them and dismissing their concerns but actually engaging with them.

Of course there are also the brainless yobs who only care about themselves and where the next pint of Stella, line of coke and fight is, but they're not far right either. They probably don't give a shit about politics of any description.

Winederlust · 02/08/2024 10:33

Elbone · 01/08/2024 21:41

You’re saying if we voted in Reform, we’d be immediately plunged into the same level of oppression as women in Saudi face?

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how politics and power works.
Germany wasn't plunged into a far right totalitarian state the second the nazis were voted in. It's more insidious than that. That's why people fall for it.
